Bloodborne

Post by Rodster »

Apologies if a thread was already started. I went five pages deep and couldn't find any.

No surprise this game is getting AMAZING reviews and this time it's all about f%$#ing offense. Though the reviews are glowing the performance on the PS4 leaves a lot to be desired like almost a minute load times for certain areas to load into the game from the HDD. And the FPS is capped at 30 FPS and sometimes it sputters because of the graphics and world detail.

So a lot of gamers petitioned From Software for a PC release and they denied it saying it was a PS4 exclusive. It looks like that's changed as a couple retailers have leaked the PC version "Nightmare Edition". Booyah ! :D

I got a copy of this last night for myself, and one for my son. We played side by side for a while, and it's drastically different than Dark Souls. I mean, the systems feel similar, but not having the "Estus Flask Dread" made it a lot more of a typical twitch-action-RPG. The blood vials are just health potions, and you tend to get them a lot more than normal loot in a Souls game, so it turned it into a sort of Dark Souls/Castlevania mix.

I started with the Cane because I assumed it would be fast, but I didn't know it would turn into this big razorwire whip. Holy crap, that thing is cool. The hit detection (as always in a From Software game) is impeccable, as I rolled under swinging swords, between 2 or 3 bad guys, getting up behind them and whipping them in half. I haven't figured out why some hits are crits and some aren't yet. I know there's an underlying system in there, but there doesn't seem to be the "get behind them and crit them" system that was in the Souls series.

The framerate chugs in places, and the loading screens are horrendous. I died enough times to see the loading screen plenty, and I'm already sick of it. But if the co-op works like they say it does (you enter a password, if your buddy enters a matching password you can summon him past the first boss), it seems like stuff that will just be accepted in order to play through it. So far, it was amazing, but I haven't even gotten to the first boss yet. I kept farming Blood Echoes and gearing up before diving deep into the city.

I want this game real bad but the load times would drive me nuts. I'm holding out hope for the game to land on Steam.

Good luck, Sony is much more involved in this one. I wouldn't expect a PC port anytime soon which is a shame because DS2 was a lot better on the Pc IMO.

After reading others who have commented on the difficulty of this game, I'll pass. Plus, the fact I've never played other Souls games, I'm thinking it wouldn't be my cup of tea.

Difficulty being too hard or too easy, Dan?

I think it's just "different". Dark Souls was much more of a block-and-watch type of game, at least for me. BB is more of a traditional action game, where you choose your spots and stay out of reach. Plus, if you get hit, you can hit them back a few times to regain some lost health. Ends up being a very cool little dance each time.

If loading screens will drive you nuts, don't do it. A death means you sit there stewing for over a minute as it loads to put you back where you died.

Is it still the same as in Demon Souls, Dark Souls and DS 2 where you have to go back to the spot where you died to retrieve your stuff?

Yep. Exact same on that front. But you keep picking up healing potions (blood vials), so it's not as crazy as trying to push forward with a constantly diminishing pile of Estus Flasks. You can carry a bunch of potions at once, so it's sort of like the "oops!" (pop a potion), get back in, kill. Loot another potion, etc.

This is the first time I wish I had a PS4.

I absolutely loved all three Souls games.

So far, it's gotten a 93 out of 100 Metacritic score based on 47 reviews. I'm hearing such amazing things about this game that I guess I'm going to look through my collection of games to see what I can trade in.

It's incredibly bad ass. The more time I spend with it, the more I fall in love with it. You just "get better" at it as you play, learning the animations and attack patterns, etc., much like the Souls series. But this one is much faster-paced. You're getting somewhere quickly, the fights are over quickly. It seems everybody is less of a damage-sponge. Yourself and enemies.

The line I read that said something like "if Dark Souls is two heavily-armored heavyweights battling it out, then Bloodborne is a naked knife fight to the death". It couldn't be more accurate. The fights are fast and over in a heart beat. Almost every death I have is from trying to counter attack an enemy who just hit me, to regenerate some health. It's a constant dance of doing damage vs. taking damage vs. health regeneration by doing more damage vs. death because you committed the "one more hit!" Cardinal Sin.

I want to say it's a Souls game for people who found Souls games boring or slow, but it's not entirely accurate. It's just a briskly paced, incredible game.

Took this for a spin last night after caving in to all the hype. I was very disappointed with Dark Souls 2, just couldn't get into it like the first two games. This one grabbed me right away. It definitely has a huge Demon/Dark Souls vibe to it with the biggest difference being avoiding attacks rather than blocking them. It still provides that ass-puckering feeling when wandering into new territory. I can't wait to dive into it more. I didn't make it to the first boss yet, I just spent my time farming some Blood Echoes to get better attire. I was stuck in one area for far too long because I had no idea where to go. Every available door was unable to be opened. It wasn't until I saw this giant f***in lever to pull that a ladder appeared and took me to the first lantern which is Bloodborne's equivalent of the campfire. Great stuff and this should definitely be the game that gets Alex to get a PS4.

This game is seriously everything I had hoped Dark Souls 2 would be and then some. I have been taking my time learning areas and farming blood echoes trying to bump up my stats. I beat the first boss and am working up the nerve to attempt the second one. I seriously love this game. Everything about it is AAA.

I bought the game on sale for $20 from Amazon and I purchased the Old Hunters DLC as well. I applied patch v1.09 but when I purchased the Old Hunters DLC, nothing downloaded.

Is that all included in the v1.09 patch? I also read that the DLC requires game triggers in order for it to appear. Is that right?

What a badass game. :D

This is what the id game "Quake" should have been. I have died so many times. I almost killed the werewolf in the opening scene. So far in the beginning i'm using the coax and kill method to thin the crowd. Way too many baddies without any badass weapons.

Forget the elite controller. Keep gathering those coupons, get Miss to pitch in a bit and find a good PS4 deal which I am sure are still around. When you play with the Dragons, she'll be busy with the PS4. Best of both worlds. :)

Terry was right about this game. There's a lot to love about the shear violence in Bloodborne. The one thing that's been mentioned over and over again is that there are NO cheap deaths. You die because the game teases and suckers you in with overconfidence thinking you've gotten so far, that the next two baddies should be no problem. That's how I just died. It took me about 45 minutes to clear out an area since i'm still at the beginning of the game. I get up the stairs and there are two werewolves and thinking, no problem. I got cornered and that's where I died.

I wish this game was on the PC.

That's what made it so impressive. And, unlike Dark Souls, it seems to reward you for pushing forward and being very aggressive. There are so many moments I can recall where it felt like a scripted action sequence. You cut something, roll about 3 inches under a big blade swinging over you, stab them in the back, jump over a low slash attempt, another cut, etc.

It's like stuff you'd normally see in a hands-off cutscene, not just some random fight against a baddie. That game was very, very cool. At a bargain price, it makes it even cooler.

Funny moment yesterday playing this game. I'm still experimenting and learning the game while in Central Yarnham. Once you get to the bonfire there's this HUGE badass Ogre banging on the door. I killed it a few times with Molotov cocktails but this time I purposely ignored it. I climbed up the stairs thinning out the baddies and had two more to go a dog and a sharpshooter. And all of a sudden I got knocked on my ass from guess who? The badass Ogre hitting me over the head with a phucking brick.

Next time must stock up on Molotov cocktails. Sh*t this game is so badass, one of the best ever even if the baddies and scenes are scripted to point. :)

Just wanted to add, that what I mean by scripted, it's kinda like Hotline Miami where it's a puzzle shooter trying to figure out the pattern. As of right now since my character hasn't leveled up, i'm using the Hall & Oates "One on One" method until I get some decent weapons.

Edit: Terry, how do you beat/kill/get past those 2 black werewolves guarding the pathway leading up the stairs in Central Yharnam? It's where I got past the mob, killed the Huge Ogre (Molotov Cocktails), kill the 3 black birds, climbed a few steps then killed the 3 dogs, and other baddies. I then climbed more steps and in order to progress i'm blocked by 2 werewolves pacing back and forth. My first attempt, I bum rushed them and died. On my second attempt I stood back with a torch until one of them spotted me and then they both came at me. I just used the blade since I wasn't sure if the torch would work and I died a second time.
