I just finished reading this new book, and I thought many here might be interested in it.
The book is basically a nonfiction corporate drama based on Tom Kalinske's time as CEO of Sega of America from 1990-1996. He was hired unexpectedly, knowing nothing about video games. In a few years, he built a corporate team, culture, and brand, taking Sega's console marketshare from 5% to 55%. Of course that didn't last, with the lame-duck Saturn coming out as their next generation console (and as the book presents it, Sega of America was completely shut out by Sega of Japan from console development decisions). The book also gives enough context to the story, covering what Nintendo did in the 80s and to counter Sega in the 90s, touches on companies like electronic arts, and Sony looms throughout. Lots of video game history.
It's a decent book, and it was interesting for me to read. I was 10 to 13 years old during this time; basically the exact audience Nintendo and Sega were fighting over. I remember the ads, the games, and what I was thinking as a young consumer, and it was interesting to read about all the corporate personalities and how the sauce was made.

Thanks for the heads-up - will definitely check this out. 'Console Wars' were way more fun then, Sega Does What Nintendon't!

Haha, as the book covers, 'Sega Does What Nintendon't' was the slogan Kalinske ditched when he took over.Macca00 wrote:Thanks for the heads-up - will definitely check this out. 'Console Wars' were way more fun then, Sega Does What Nintendon't!
Think "SEGA!" and "blast processing."
