Xbox Live - 10 years old today

Post by F308GTB »

Launched back on Nov 15, 2002. I was a year or so late to the game, but Live has provided years of excellent service and entertainment. I have some fond memories from the original Xbox days. Nothing like a buzzed PK screaming "Fu$k you Carl" during PGR races.

I wasn't heavily into racers, but was similarly introduced to Live with PK's infamous "Pass the Fu$king puck, JACK!" in NHL Rivals.

Wow. Doesn't actually seem that long ago. I was on day 1. Ghost Recon was my jam.

I was on XBL for the beta. Left in 2006 when I stopped console gaming. Returned last November.

Everyone here knows I don't like to spend money, but XBL has been worth every penny.

My top five list of games to play on XBL with DSP guys:

1. Early Ghost Recon games (Island Thunder and Ghost Recon 2, especially)
2. MotoGP 2
3. TOCA 3
4. Forza Horizon
5. NHL Rivals pond hockey

Playing online with DSPer's in NHL Rivals and TOCA 3 are what got me started with Xbox Live. The DSP Madden leagues, Ice Dragons OTP and various other multiplayer games have kept it strong for years and here's hoping for many more years to come.

I was hoping to be one of the people surprised with a 10 year system MS is sending out. Was a Day 1 beta tester and have never been an inactive member since launch. Guess I wasn't chosen. Oh well Live is the best thing to happen to gaming IMO in my lifetime.

I missed the earliest days of XBL, but I'm sure this brings back memories;

Those screens are far more intuitive than the busy mess that is today's dashboard. The UI designer needs to be fired.

Is it a better design, or is just more simple because it only has to present a tiny fraction of content as compared to today?

Content has increased, sure. But the dashboard was fine before they went all Windows 8/Metro on everything. The old "blade" system when the 360 was first introduced was far better than today's version as well. So the content isn't the issue, it's the presentation of it.

But the old blade system didn't show a giant cartoon character for whom you can buy DLC clothing. This was a very important step forward...

Well yeah, they gotta make money on top of your 50 dollars somehow. No wonder the PSN has never taken off! No avatars!

We can make fun of avatars but man if I don't see a lot of effort put in by my DSP friends on their look. I think some of you change it everyday. :)

I'll also say my 2 girls spend more time messing with their avatars then playing games. So poke fun if you want but I'm sure the person who came up with that idea will take all the ribbing people want to throw at him.

I was a launch day guy as well. The Ghost Recon matches were epic, and I also loved the Project Gotham 2 poker nights back in the day. MotoGP 2 had epic amounts of first-turn cornholing. The NFL 2k5 DSP/OS league was also amazing, even if Rob and I had to replay our playoff game three times because of disconnects, and the Madden 10 league was incredibly fun as well. My favorite, though, was probably the Gears nights, just because it's so hard to top a chainsaw bayonet.

I definitely need to get Forza Horizon so I can play with you guys. I just need to get XCOM out of my system first.

The various Codemasters racing games are what drew me to XBL (and the Xbox in general). There were some great nights of ToCA, but nothing was more exciting than racing IndyCars wheel-to-wheel whenever it actually worked.

I didn't get one of those crazy 10 year anniversary consoles either. But I did get a cool avatar helmet to promote how lame I am for being with them for 10 years via email! LOL

Ditto I just got that as well.

I went back and checked all my junk mail to see if I missed the email. LOL

I don't think they have given away any of the consoles yet, it says to get entered to win one, all you have to do is download the anniversary gamerpic. Bottom of this page says the sweepstakes ends on November 22nd.

Wow!!!!!!! This is what separates the XBOX from the PS3. Amazingly 11/15 is also my wedding anniversary, no Live for me until tomorrow.
