iRacing DSP Poker Night League

Post by DChaps »

With the release of the new iRacing build that has full league functionality, I decided to start a DSP Poker Night league. I know we have not had great results in the past with turnout and consistency, but that does not stop me. :) To get more participation, I may open the league membership up to other iRacing users, as long as they meet the default criteria for membership(TBD). This will be a pick up and play league where fun, clean, but not too serious racing is the goal, with a minimal time commitment. I am shooting for Tuesday or Thursday nights starting at 10:00pm EDT. First race will be an oval, followed by a road race starting at 10:30. These will be relatively short races(10-20 minutes), using fixed setups. Basically the goal will be for two races in an hour (including practice and qualifying). I will probably run 6 week series with 2 drop weeks. Oval championship, Road championship and combined. The tracks, cars, and setups will be communicated beforehand, and will rotate using the default content and the additional 3 tracks available with the deal in the post below. The championships are not really the point of this, but just something fun to throw in to hopefully keep some interest. If you can only compete once a month that is fine too.

Free 3 months iRacing Deal - See post below for full details.

Edit: After July 31, 2012 the deal changed to 3 months free instead of 6. Still a good deal, particulalry for the three additional free tracks of Mid-Ohio, Mosport, and Infineon ($45 value if purchased individually)

To join the league it is simple, just sign up for iRacing (for free) using the deal below if you are not already an iRacing member. Then just post here in this thread that you are interested in joining and follow the link below to get to the league website.

Free 3 Months of iRacing

This is a great deal for anyone who wants to give iRacing a shot. 3 months free, 13 tracks, and 7 cars. The new build with a multitude of enhancements was just released this past week, that includes built in league functionality. Take advantage before July 31 to get the most bang for your buck (so to speak, since it is actually free). ** While this deal is for new members only, I believe if you are no longer an active member you can re-sign up using a different user name and still get the 3 months free. See the links below for more information.

I am tempted to try iRacing round 3, but I was so bad at this game I'm not sure I can do it again.

I now attribute my meningitis from 2 years ago (which hit in the midst of a free 2-month iRacing trial) to my brain exploding trying to be fast at this game and utterly failing.

Yikes, I definitely don't want you to go through that again! :) One thing that I failed to mention in the initial post is that I plan on allowing all driving aids for this league (something new that got added last year to iRacing). The iRacing driving aids are actually pretty good in that they definitely make the sim much more approachable to a beginner, but do not really give an unfair advantage compared to someone who is seasoned and comfortable without the aids.

Woah, didn't know there are driving aids now! I'm actually going to sign up today anyway because there's really no reason not to, even if I never play it.

Just signed up for an account. I had tried it back when it first launched and let my account expire. I guess they finally deleted my old account as I was able to sign up with a new one using the promo code. Thursday works better for me but I can do Tuesday if that is what works best for everyone else.

I hadn't been playing it enough to continually pay for it, but the 6 months free thing was too good to pass up. I signed up a new account for my wife, so if I can run it would likely be as "Jill Crouch2" lol

Check away, Don. It's nice to be thought of.

The reason I've been a bit quiet of late is that my G25 last came out of the box for our most recent poker night, which must be coming up to a year ago now. My XBox is primarily a DVD player, my PS3's main function is ornamental and there's nothing on the horizon that looks like shaking me back into action. It's all a bit strange and I really can't put my finger on why.

I completely understand Adam and its good to see you are safe and sound. :) I have actually not raced iRacing in several months, which was part of my reasoning for making myself start a league. Since my membership is renewed for 2 years and I have all the content, I figured I should try to get my motivation back for racing and get something out of my investment so to speak. For me its just been a combination of busyness at work and home, but yet lazyness in the few hours of free time that I have (opting for watching re-runs of The Office on Netflix at 2:00am vs. lugging the G27 out and putting in some racing).

My hope is that this league will be quick, easy, and fun without requiring too much time commitment. Although, I do understand for you to make that time probably means major sleep sacrifices so again I completely understand if you can't make it or lack the motivation. ;)

I hope to be there, Don. But I got a new lappy from work in May, and it's more of a pure business machine with very mediocre graphics capabilities.

iRacing is overcooking my graphics card/chip after about 10 minutes, resulting in pitiful frame rates. I have turned off shadows, AA and most filtering and continue to reduce resolution to keep the machine cool, but it's not looking good.

I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

I must be an idiot. I can't figure out how to get the street stock to go over 92mph. In 4th the rev limiter kicks in at 92mph. The spec ford is fine and I was able to run laps in it but no luck with the street stock. What am I doing wrong?

OK, I'm running at 1992 IBM PC resolution, but my card/chip is holding up! Seriously, resolution isn't that bad. :)

Depends on what track you're running. Street Stocks aren't intended to be flying around some of the larger tracks, so you could be taching out. The tracks the series is meant to run on shouldn't red-line, but on some tracks it requires a setup tweak to give it a normal gear set.

My iRacing membership lapsed on my birthday, July 12th (I hadn't turned 19 when I first registered here. Doesn't feel like 8 years...). I thought about having a bash at the free trial under a new account but I haven't made it as far as that yet. The mojo might come back if I'm behind the wheel again - I played the arcade coin-op version of GRID the other week and didn't really want to leave it - but it's finding the motivation to get the wheel out in the first place.

Edited to add: If I'm honest, I don't think buying NFS: The Run helped very much...

Thompson International Speedway

The terms “Thompson Speedway” and “New England motorsports” are all but synonymous. The track that became known as the “Indy of the East” was born of the calamitous hurricane (“The Long Island Express”) that devastated much of New England in 1938, including the Connecticut farm of John Hoenig. Rather than rebuilding his farm, Hoenig constructed the country’s first paved race track on the site – a 5/8s mile oval with turns banked at 26 degrees.

Hoenig opened his Thompson International Speedway on May 26, 1940 for a race featuring what are now called sprint cars. Dizzy Vance won the track’s debut event for car owner Louis D’Amore before an overflow crowd… and motor racing fans have been flocking to the northeast corner of Connecticut ever since.

Following World War II, Thompson became a hotbed of stock car racing. In 1951, the newly-organized National Association for Stock Car Automobile Racing (aka NASCAR) staged a Grand National race at Thompson won by Neil Cole. While the Grand National series (now NASCAR Sprint Cup Series®) would return on a number of occasions with NASCAR legends like David Pearson and Bobby Issac visiting victory lane, Thompson’s weekly racing series would be the springboard for many of stock racing’s biggest stars.

Today, seventy years on from its tumultuous birth, Thompson International Speedway remains in the capable hands of Hoenig’s son Donald, together with grandson D.R. Theirs continues to be one of the busiest race tracks in the country, running weekly stock car races for Sunoco Modifieds, Super Late Models, Late Models, Thompson Modifieds, Limited Sportsman, Mini-Stocks, Pro Four Modifieds as well as the NASCAR Whelen Modified Series®.

Street Stocks

When it comes to grass-roots racing, it doesn’t get any more “rooted” than Street Stocks. Although there are (nearly) as many different variations on Street Stock rules as there are quarter- and half-mile race tracks around America, the common thread is the use of an older American street car as the basis of the Street Stock race car.

Depending on the race track and its rules (and your budget), Street Stocks range from little more than a street car with its interior gutted, its windows removed and a rudimentary roll cage to a full-on race car with a highly-tuned engine, upgraded suspension and plastic bodywork conforming to the shape of the original street car. (iRacing’s Street Stock is built to the full-on race car rules).

Regardless of the specific rules, turning a street car into a Street Stock is not only less expensive than buying a purpose-built race car, the process of building a race car from a street car helps wanna-be race drivers and mechanics learn the fundamentals of race car construction, maintenance and setups. And learning is what it’s all about, for Street Stocks is the class to learn the basics of stock car racing.

Specs:
Engine: Small block Chevrolet
Power: 375 horsepower
Transmission: 4-speed manual
Weight: 3400 pounds
Wheelbase: 107”
Suspension: SLA front; floating leaf spring rear
Tires: Hoosier Commanche, street tread, bias ply ( 15” x 8 )

Mosport International Raceway

Mosport International Raceway (aka Mosport Park) is one of the world’s classic road racing circuits. Designed and built in the late 1950s on the rolling, wooded sandhill country about 50 miles east of Toronto, Mosport’s ten-turn, 2.459 mile track is widely-regarded as one of the most daunting road courses on the planet owing to an abundance of ultra-fast, blind corners, many of which feature dramatic elevation changes. However, the track’s signature turn is Moss Corner, a double apex hairpin named in honor of Stirling Moss, who re-designed the corner after seeing its originally-planned configuration.

Fittingly, Moss won the first major race held at Mosport (pronounced Moe-Sport as a contraction of the words motor and sport) in a Lotus 19 in 1961. Mosport subsequently enjoyed tremendous popularity throughout the 1960s and became the traditional first round of the Can-Am Challenge Series. In 1967 Mosport staged the first true World Championship Canadian Grand Prix Formula One event, won by Jack Brabham. Together with Quebec’s Circuit Mont Tremblant, Mosport hosted the Canadian Grand Prix on alternate years and, later, served as the event’s permanent home from 1972 until the race moved to Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 1978

In addition to Formula One, Mosport also staged a couple of USAC Indy car races in the late 60s and, after losing the Canadian Grand Prix to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, continued to host major motorcycle and sports car races including the IMSA Camel GT and, more recently, American Le Mans Series.

Originally a publically-owned venture, Mosport saw a succession of owners including Norm Namerow and Harvey Huddes before the Panoz Motor Sports Group acquired the facility in 1998. The PMSG widened and repaved the track in 2001 in order to meet FIA specifications although, in contrast to the vast majority of road courses built in the 1950s and Ô60s still being utilized, Mosport’s basic layout (and character) remains intact.

In 1967, Jimmy Clark in his Lotus 49 Ford/Cosworth won the pole for the inaugural Canadian Grand Prix with a lap of 1:22.4. The current track record of 1:04.094 (138.116 mph) was established by Dindo Capello in an Audi R10 TDI in 2008.

Cadillac CTS-V

To borrow a phrase from another General Motors division, this is not your father’s Cadillac . . . not by a long shot. The Cadillac CTS-V is one serious race car, one featuring a 460 bhp V8 produced in cooperation with Katech Engine Development and a chassis designed and developed by Pratt & Miller. The collaboration between Katech and Pratt & Miller is the same that produced the Corvette C6.R GT1 that dominated ALMS and Le Mans GT1 competition for years and, more recently, has propelled Corvette to the forefront of the GT2 class.

Suffice to say the Cadillac CTS-V is living-up to its heritage . . . and then some. The Caddy scored a pair of SCCA Pirelli World Challenge wins in its first year of competition and, in the hands of veterans Johnny O’Connell and Andy Pilgrim, is a firm favorite to win the GT class championship in the 2012 World Challenge
