London 2012. Let the Games Begin...
It's supposed to be a spectacular opening show. I still remember the Beijing fireworks 4 summers ago.
Already in soccer, Japan upset Spain 1-0 which was kind to the best team in the world as De Gea saved their bacon a few times. England just managed to squeeze a tie with Senegal. It's important to mention that not all nationals are sporting ther best players on the pitch but still quite a good number of stars.
Look forward to watch the track and field events as well as swimming. Will Mr U. Bolt strike the world again?

Wish we could get the BBC live feed over here. NBC will do their best to make watching the games a chore.10spro wrote:It's supposed to be a spectacular opening show. I still remember the Beijing fireworks 4 summers ago.

Where I am now (currently in Shanghai) all the Olympic news and feeds are coming thru the BBC network. Back north of he border I am sure I'll be getting all 3 networks in CBC, BBC and of course NBC.
Re: London 2012. Let the Games Begin...
Let's take a moment to focus on the real tragedy of the games:
Benny Hill didn't stick around long enough to light the torch in drag after chasing 3 blondes around in circles.
I'm assuming there will be a minute's silence at the very least.

If Billy f***in Idol isn't involved, it is a s*** show.
Re: London 2012. Let the Games Begin...
I just want to see Keith Richards try to smoke the torch!
Seriously I'm looking forward to it, I always enjoy watching the Olympics. More so the winter games, but still there is a lot to enjoy in the summer games. Plus my daughter just finished tennis camp today so she is excited to watch that.

I can't believe the games are going to be anything but a letdown after my enjoyment of the IAAF World Junior Championship hurdling heats in Barcelona.
Re: London 2012. Let the Games Begin...
I actually got into the field hockey in 08.

Maybe John Terry will light the torch.

Enjoyed the opening ceremony. The music was great, from James Bond to Mr Bean a brilliant and cheeky affair.

I was just starting to think it was getting obnoxious and self indulgent when they announced chariots of fire but then Roan Atkinson(Mr Bean ) came on and took the piss just enough to keep me going through the end.
The rings being forged and then coming together was awesome i must admit.
The Queen jumping from the helicopter wasn't bad either.

With the exception of the flame being lit that was horrifically boring.

Which one? The NBC Live one?Naples39 wrote:

Someone on local radio said Team USA games are the hottest ticket. Hotter than soccer matches in London?

NBC also streams every event to the PC for participating broadband providers at nbcolympics.com.wco81 wrote:Which one? The NBC Live one?Naples39 wrote:

Regarding soccer, Team USA hoops probably is more popular because the Olympics are very much a second-rate soccer tournament. Nowhere near the quality of the World Cup, Euros or the English Premier League.

Even a second rate fan like me knows that .
At least that is how I see Olympic soccer.
Re: London 2012. Let the Games Begin...
I thought it was a pretty good show, given that the organisers were hamstrung by the fact that protocol dictated that a fair portion of the event had to feature over an hour of people walking behind their national flag, which is horrendously boring to watch, even if it is your national flag...which it isn't mostly. The Brits have a great legacy of pop music and I thought it was clever to showcase that. Fair dues to them also for not shying away from including bands like the Jam and the Sex Pistols. I'm sure the Queen was delighted to have the opportunity to hum along to "Pretty Vacant". It wouldn't surprise me if it was her second favourite Sex Pistols song.
Re: London 2012. Let the Games Begin...
The Queen clearly cares about her nails. This was snapped during the entrance of the British athletes lol.

I watched the opening ceremony live over the internet on a Canadian station, then on NBC with the gf. I noticed a few differences in the two telecasts. 1) NBC showed a ton more commercials, not surprisingly; 2) The NBC commentators would not shut the f*** up. I guess they assume Americans have an average IQ of 70 and need to be told what they are seeing every five seconds. I also liked how NBC had to tell us when a country was Muslim. I mean wtf is up with that? The Canadian crew was much less intrusive and annoying; 3) NBC completely left out an entire segment, and perhaps the most moving part of the ceremony. I guess that vanilla interview with Phelps was much more important since that is what was shown instead.
In any case, I thought the show started off strong, but dragged a lot in places. I'm not one to get excited over health care systems I guess.

Re: London 2012. Let the Games Begin...
I enjoyed the opening. From a piece of Britain's heritage to the pop music segment, the direction of Danny Boyle was great see. My kid had a blast watching Mr Bean and if there was anything to complain about, I would say that it was a bit too long. I much rather see more the cultural part of a host country than the flag parade.
Enjoying the BBC and Canadian coverage so far.

Re: London 2012. Let the Games Begin...
The James Bond segment was pretty cool. For some reason, I always enjoy the parade of nations, although I think in previous years it dragged on too long. Seemed the parade was quicker this time.
