OUYA

Re: OUYA
I was reading about that, and it seems to be an interesting idea.
The question I am asking myself is what will this offer beyond simply getting a bluetooth controller for an Android table or iPad. I suppose this is selfish because not everyone already has a $500 device like this.
There's a lot of ins and outs here I suppose when you think about where the boundaries lines are between tablet/phone games, "console" games, XBLA games, or games that appear on both. Seems like a cool option though and I hope it comes to fruition (and judging by getting to 30% of the fundraising goal in one day, seems likely).
The big question will be development of games that look good at 1080 resolution on the TV, as opposed to the limited $1 games that are so popular on iOS/Android right now. I can already hook up those $1 games to my TV via HDMI and iPad, and it's a "why bother?" situation.
I could see there being a market for $5-20 games to be played with a real controller on the TV, which ultimately is similar to the Xbox arcade console package MS tried to sell. That was $200 though and seemingly just served as a teaser to full-fledged XBOX adoption.

Re: OUYA
Now that they are starting to ship out the DEV units, I'm fully believing this thing is going to be real. I didn't get in on the kickstarter but I did pre-order. 130 bucks for the device w/ two controllers. Worst case it'll be able to stream content quickly and easily to my TV, but best case is that it'll be a platform to play all of the great tablet/phone games on. I'm not a huge fan of gaming on small touchscreen devices, so this should solve that issue.
Also, as Naples mentioned previously in this thread, I don't think 1080p content is going to be an issue at all seeing as though the tablets and phones are already sporting that resolution or greater...so developers already have a head start in terms of scaling them up to the big screen.
I'm definitely psyched for April to arrive.
And here ya go...the unboxing of the dev unit:

And their new site: http://ouya.tv to follow along w/ blogs, games, and developer info.

Re: OUYA
I got in on the Kickstarter very early and am looking forward to what they can do. I'm somewhat guarded in my expectations but the worst that can happen is (as db alluded to) I get a $100 media streaming device.

I just don't get being jacked up over this thing is all. From what I gather, its just gonna play mobile phone/tablet games on a tv, right?

Re: OUYA
It's essentially going to be a console. So you'll be able to do all of the functions of your android device, but on your tv. The big "to do" about it is it's openness for developers. It's only BUILT on Android, but that doesn't mean it can only run games from the Market. It's an open platform that's supposedly REALLY easy to develop for so it should be a lot broader than just phone/tablet games. So don't pigeon hole it like that, because it's much more. One of the development requirements is that there is always a "free" version of the game to test out before you buy (think demo) so there never will be games out there that you can't try first. That's never a bad thing.Teal wrote:I just don't get being jacked up over this thing is all. From what I gather, its just gonna play mobile phone/tablet games on a tv, right?
And read the site I linked...specifically this page: http://www.ouya.tv/gamers/
Nothing like commenting that something is pointless without being informed properly. I never do that.

Re: OUYA
It's an open platform for everything. Games, music, movies, etc. Read the site already. Why is this so hard to do?Teal wrote:So this is a streaming deal?
Re: OUYA
Teal,
think XBLA and Xbox media (netflix, iheartradio) but without Microsoft controlling everything.
Imagine SNES and Genesis emulators playable on your TV through Ouya.
Imagine games like Dead Trigger playable on your TV.
This $99 device will have many experimental games...some sucky, some really cool.
Indie developers will flock and have already flocked to this thing in droves because of the freedom they have, ease of delvelopment and very inexpensive price point entry.

Re: OUYA
For 100 bucks, I could possibly see it being a kind of neat diversion, I suppose. But I don't know what a Dead Trigger is (unless you're talking about that unfortunate phenomena that strikes old men)...so I guess I can't get too excited about it for that reason...lol

Here is a partial list of confirmed games/programs:

Teal, this device will not replace a 360 or PS3 but it will be a really cool 2nd device that should get much play.

Re: OUYA
Cool concept. But if the OS for this system is based on Android, won't people prefer to play these games on their phones or tablets instead? Is there really that large of a market for Android-based games that people would rather play on a TV than a native phone or tablet? Plus most of the games listed on the Wikipedia page and shown in the OUYA promo video look like glorified XBL Arcade or Indie titles.
One advantage for the OUYA: The $99 price point is very nice.

Re: OUYA
And XXXIV wins the thread.

For me, it's the price point of the games themselves that is a real potential selling point. This afternoon I bought Crazy Taxi for iOS - it looks and sounds just like the Dreamcast version and I got it for 99 cents! The only issue is that I have to play it on my tiny ass phone with touch controls - with something like the Ouya I could use a controller. It isn't just ports like Crazy Taxi or GTA III (which is also 99 cents) but there are lots of excellent iOS/Android games that are full of features, cheap as hell but hindered by touch screen controls. If I could 1/10th of the iOS catalog on the OUYA with the same, or at least similar, pricing scheme I'll be really happy.

Re: OUYA
guess it'll depend on what games will be developed for it, but I can see this being the wave of the future.
I'm sure if someone wants to make serious dough, release a football game. I am open to new football games with new engines and new gameplay so just that we have an alternative to EA's. Would EA's NFL Exclusivity still take into effect with this console? I guess it won't matter if they make a football game fully customizable.

I don't see how this thing will sell.. I'd rather play these types of games on my ipad.
For me, going from an xbox game over to this would be a downer. Might be something the kids would like, but like the wii.. the newness would wear off quite quickly in our house.
