NHL 13

Post by Sudz »

As you may remember, i started a hockey gaming site in 2010. I had to pull it down due to a stupid javascript exploit that hit a friend's site that i was hosting and infected all of the sites. I'd love for feedback on the site, as well as input on what we'd like to see in NHL 13.

http://www.puckgamer.com/nhl-13-wishlist/

I also figured I'd get a thread going for the game here as we should be getting some decent information soon.

EA's NHL series has grown stale for me.. in fact, 2k sports releasing a new NHL game would make my year.

I'm like Mizz. I really like the EA NHL series, but now playing 4 years in a row it's gotten stale. I hardly do any of the offline modes except for HUT and that is getting old now 2 years in. Only thing saving it for me is that they added more tourney's this year. I played online over 100 games per season the last 3 years, but this year I think I've only played like 40.

The game is solid, but maybe I'm just looking for a change of pace. I'd still buy it in 13.

I'm in the same category as you guys. I can't say I was unhappy with NHL 12, but i just played it a lot less. It sorely needs a a mode like 2K's MLB or NBA Today.

I've been ready for 2K hockey to come back for some time. That and College Hoops 2K would make me a really happy sports gamer.

I used to buy a hockey game every year until something funny happened, EA stopped giving me a reason to buy the new version.

I expected NHL 12 to blow my mind since it was my first console hockey game since 2006. Instead, I was bored with it after about a week.

Most of my hockey gaming is single-player, and the single-player AI in NHL 12 is really bad. No variety in CPU attack, poor off-the-puck movement by AI teammates, pathetically low amount of penalties called, etc.

I wouldn't be surprised one bit if I skip NHL 13.

With sliders, most of that can be improved. I'm not sure it is worth it at this point. NHL 09 and 10 were massive time sinks. NHL 11 and 12 were just small improvements. NHL 12 broke home ice advantage for line changes, and penalties were indeed to few.

But the game is solid on higher difficulties and adjusted sliders. It's not the perfect simulation, but I found it engaging as heck. I was calling the NHL series my favorite sports series ever a couple of years ago.

Even with sliders, I finally bottomed out at about 50 games in my franchise.. every game just feels exactly like the last game.

Glad I still have NHL 2k10, with the latest rosters, it at least has variety and goalies who don't stand on their heads game in and game out.

Bingo. Very well said. The lack of variety kills NHL 12. Its gameplay has ZERO organic feel.

Well, I didn't play much of NHL 12, either. But it wasn't drastically different than NHL 09 and NHL 10, which were awesome.

I loved NHL 2K7, but trying to get into 2K10 was just impossible. I thought it was pretty awful. My hope was that they were going to take a year off and tighten up gameplay and bring out 2K12 with an NHL Today mode. But it looks like the series is just dead.

I agree that there's a lack of variety in gameplay in the offline mode. I've played this one only for Live games, wanted to give a try for the improved Be a Pro mode but ultimately went back for online games, especially OTP. The commentary is getting old to me, I'd like to hear somebody else next year.

I played the heck out of 11, but at some point, they have to recode.. it just doesn't feel like hockey to me. NHL 2k10 is horrible out of the box, you have to download the newest roster by Fiddy and use one of the many great slider sets. NHL 2k7 was great though.

I have NHL2K10 and I can't get past the 'stuck stick' when you get close to the goal. I don't buy they did it on purpose to make the game harder. If they did that's cheap. I really liked NHL2K9, which I rented a few months ago. But the game looks like crap and the rosters are outdated.

So it's left me with NHL 12. Offline the game and modes are just not playable anymore. Online is getting that way too now. LIke I mentioned, HUT is the only fun thing about the game.

NHL 12 has frustrated me this year but I've still played the hell out of it. I still love the analog controls. It makes the game a cut above most sports games. I'll buy 13

I booted up NHL 12 the other day and found they still have not done anything to incorporate the real life Playoffs into the game online or offline. I see games like FIFA 12 doing that with the weekly challenges which is sort of like EA's 'NBA/MLB Today' feature, but nothing for 12.

I hope 13 does something when playoffs come around. It's the best time to watch hockey and it would be nice to maybe put together some kind of mode in the game to reflect real life.

Don't they still have playoff mode where you can pick the teams?

ya they do but i mean more like online playoff matchups or 7 game tourney's etc... The offline game for me is pretty much dead. I think I did playoff offline mode like 3 years ago and never touched it since.

Yeah, and with updated rosters, it works out fine. It would be cool if they had MLB Today like presentation that incorporated stats from previous match-ups and and the season. But it didn't take long to set up the current playoff structure.

Been playing more hockey since the playoffs started. Still bummed that they broke the home ice advantage. You still don't get to see what line the visiting team put out before selecting yours to match-up. It seems like it should have been an easy enough fix.

I have to revisit this thread.. funny reading my comments.

After trying to play NHL 14, I traded it in for credit and I'm back to NHL 13, starting season #3.

We lost in 7 games to the Coyotes who then lost to Carolina in the Stanley Cup.

I just don't think any other version comes close to 13. NHL 14 has a fighting engine.. but that got old real quick and the game play just feels really over the top compared to NHL 13.

Both Sedin's went elsewhere this season, (H. Sedin to San Jose and D. Sedin to New Jersey I believe).

We finally have some youth coming up this season and didn't resign Halak. Should be another fun season.

you know when I first got NHL 13 I despised it because they introduced that skating momentum that was so different than the previous versions (and NHL 14). I was so use to the arcadey style of the previous versions (and later NHL 14) where the skaters could go from 0 to 100 in a split second.

But the skating momentum grew on me and took some time to get into and at the end of the day (and after 7 updates), the game played super realistic. The skating momentum truly changed the game from semi arcade to more sim.

But in NHL 14 they scrapped it all and came back to the accelerate on a dime skating. I just couldn't go back to that in 14.

Completely agree... skating is near perfect in NHL 13. It just plays a more realistic game of hockey than another version. NHL 14 is horrible, over the top hits, skating way too fast, puck bouncing like a rubber bouncy ball from a $0.25 machine. Even the Fight Night engine is boring to me after 10 games.

I did lower the speed, hits stuff, etc.. but I kept wanting to play NHL 13. Even scoring is much easier for me in NHL 14.

It's a perfect blend of sim and arcade for me.

The cheap goals killed 14 for me. You could get really cheap goals from the blue line where you couldn't in the previous versions. Also, if the CPU scored on you, most times than not, you would tie in the next minute or two. I guess it was a reverse catchup logic.

Yeah, my first game with 14, I won like 8-3 or something. There were some really cheap goals, many from way far out.
