Collecting stuff.

Post by XXXIV »

I like to collect stuff...Not just broads...but the other stuff that relates to what I am into.

Roughly about three or so ago I began switching my collecting interest from sports stuff to original movie posters from all over the world.

I made a first youtube video on 10/27/2010 with my up til then collection to some Foo Fighter music. Granted half the views are probably by me as I have no idea how they count em but it just went over 1,500 views today.

I like to share :P

Groovy. Have a few older posters myself. My aunt managed a theater in the late 70s/early 80s. Also picked up a few others from the 50s and 60s. Over the years we've had a fair amount of collecting interests:

- Wife's political collection with campaigns buttons going back to the 1800s (McKinley gold bug), autographs (Nixon, Bush Sr, Taft, Thatcher, Ford, ...)
- Non-sports trading cards from the 1900s to 1970s, unopened boxes from the 60s
- Sports memorabilia and cards (sets, individuals, etc from 50s-70s mostly)
- Bicycles - OK, not really collecting, but I've got 8 or 9 in the garage
- Games, probably over 500 from various consoles
- Vinyl albums

Now how do you store all those posters?

Great question. All over the damn place. :P

The best way would be with drafting drawers but I cant presently afford them.
So the folded ones and the small foreign sizes are sleeved or in plastic envelopes on shelves in a closet. Some rolled are in the tubes they came in, some are standing in a big box and most are laying flat in couple of flat boxes under the bed.

I have framed a few. Then re framed them. 8)

I keep rotating my posters and doing themes so the frames from Sue at http://www.hollywoodposterframes.com/ and on ebay at http://stores.ebay.com/HollywoodPosterFrames?_rdc=1 are perfect. Pretty easy to switch em in and out. They are not so cheap but they are what I wanted.

My current set up in this room I am sitting in...I need a special size for a Swedish Goldfinger poster I have so I can move that Tombstone outta here and get the Bond theme right.

Also, Robert at http://www.spotlightdisplays.com/ is an alternative ...Especially if you have a crazy big size like a French 1p or an Italian 2f or 4f.

That room looks cool. I remember as a kid watching the guys posting and painting the commercials on billboards and I would ask the fellows for an extra copy for my own room which was filled with soccer stars and tennis players as well as Roger Moore in 007. I was a huge fan of him. Because I travel all over the world, I have a friend that would ask me for special posters in different languages but because everything is so digital these days, it's been more difficult to get them. But nice looking room.

I used to collect cigar bands back before we had kids and I smoked quite a few sticks.

Now I have just one collection -- business cards. No rhyme or reason, but I've saved every card that I've received over my professional career the last 24 years. I was LinkedIn before LinkedIn. :)

Seriously, I might glue all of the cards into a collage on top of a giant, coffee table when I retire and then put about 10 coats of polyurethane over it. Will be a great conversation starter, especially since business cards probably will be extinct by then. Kind of like talking with teenagers today about cassette tapes. :)

I'll have to dig them out and snap some photos. Favorites? Have a '60s poster for X-15 with Bronson and Mary Tyler Moore. Goes with the space theme for my profession. Got a kick out of it since it said "Actually filmed in space!" which is actually true (footage from X-15 flights). I've got a few cheesy '50s sci-fi posters which are just campy. I think my Motel Hell poster bit the dust. Always like that one.

I dont know which ones you own and they are not my area but I do know some 50s sci fi movie paper can fetch some good prices.

Love the Tombstone poster. One of the best movies ever. Kilmer was screwed by not being nominated for an Oscar.

I dont per say, but how hard can it be? if they are that expensive i was just trying to give you a cheaper avenue maybe.

Im a finish carpenter by trade. I make frames out of broken pro hockey sticks sometimes for the kids team fundraisers so just thought "oh i could whip 34 out a frame" so he can save money, make the missus happy, get back on xbox live with the boys. yeh know

I have run out of space on my walls so now they get floor time.

A medium sized French A Shot In The Dark 1964 movie poster and and a full sized U.S. 27 x 40 TV poster for my now favorite show.
