NHL Offseason 2011

Post by Naples39 »

Okay, so the Bruins have had time to sober up by now, and the draft is a few days away.

For one thing, the NHL is changing the headshot rule to remove the lateral and blindside qualifications. I think they are keeping some nuance to the rule, but in general I think it turns the presumption that a hit to the head is illegal unless there's a good reason for it to happen, rather than vice versa.

Image

Also, interesting times for Flyers fans. I am pretty pumped about the possibility of signing Bryzgalov as long as the cap hit is reasonable. $5-6m is fine with me, but several years at amount of $6.25+ would cross the line for me and be counterproductive.

Carter could also be traded, which is just fine with me if they get a lot in return. There was a rumor of Carter to Columbus for the #8 pick, Voracek and Moore (#21 pick in 09). I would take that in a heartbeat.

Offseason is always interesting. There is so much parity now that offseason moves are very important and having a good GM is fairly key. I'll be interested to see what Philly does in terms of a goalie. I hope they can pick up a good one so as to make the East even more interesting.

I could definitely live with Carter getting moved. RUMORS floating that the Flyers are close with Bryzgalov...at $7 mill. Holmgren has denied the rumors and said "they are not close.". Hopefully the get it done before July 1.

Those rumors are suspect to me. I'm sure that's where Bryz started his asking price, but I can't imagine him getting 7x7.

The Oil faces a dilemma with the No. 1 pick overall. Quite a difference from last year, when Taylor Hall was a lock as No. 1.

Some say the Oil should take the Swedish defenseman Adam Larsson, whose smooth style and decent size could put him on the Edmonton blue line this fall. But others think the Oil should take Red Deer center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins first overall, giving them Eberle and RNH as the hubs of their top two lines for perhaps the next decade.

I lean toward RNH. Scoring has been a real problem for the Oil the past few seasons. I still think Edmonton can get a solid NHL defenseman with its second pick in the first round, at No. 19.

The Oilers are taking Nugent-Hopkins for sure and he will be a great player, similar like Patrick Kane. Next year though is when you want the #1 overall pick...you've got Nail Yukapov coming out.
PK do you think the Oilers are gonna deal Hemsky? I know the Blues are dangling some of their 5 picks in the first 3 rounds looking for a proven goal scorer. We don't have a 1st round pick this year though but we are sitting at #32 in round 2. I personally don't think that Hemsky is a guy we probably have interest in but I know the Blues are actively looking to make a deal.

A lot depends on what is offered for Hemsky. He's on the last year of his deal for $4.1 million. So even though Hemsky is overrated, he's still solid value for money at that price.

I think Tambellini might hold on to Hemmer until the trade deadline next year and then dangle him for Oilers' needs for the final push for a playoff spot -- fingers crossed! -- or for role players and draft picks if the Oil is out of the running for the postseason.

Hemmer is a UFA next July, so the Oil should be able to get assets for him before next summer. Teams still are dazzled with his skill even though Hemmer is a highlight-reel superstar, not a consistent top-line stud that the Oil expected when they signed him to a six year, $24-million deal five years ago.

I would shed few tears to see Hemmer go now, especially if the deal is right. But I still think the trade deadline makes more sense. Teams usually are more desperate then, although last season's deadline day was dormant.

Corey Perry, Hart Trophy winner. He was very deserving, but that reads so weird to me! Almost like Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim Ducks did four years ago.

Most of the awards were given to the most deserving person. Perry had a hell of a season and I was glad to see him get the Hart. Bylsma definitely deserved the Jack Adams. Thomas was a no-brainer for the Vezina. Skinner was obvious for the Calder. The Ted Lindsay IMO is a huge award to get because it is the actual players voting. Sedin had to be happy about getting the award. The only award that I thought was a bit of a sham was the Norris. Lidstrom's reputation certainly got him the Norris this year, as I felt Chara was far more deserving seeing that he is the best shutdown defender in the league and the captain of the Stanley Cup winner. All the other award winners -- Gillis, St. Louis, Kesler, etc. -- were great picks. Awesome job by the voters this year.

I agree, he's an Oiler for sure unless they make an offer that Tambellini can't refuse. Good speed and skill on Nugent-Hopkins, hard to get off the puck, I see more of a young J. Sakic in him.

OMG all hell is breaking loose in Flyerdom.

Carter gone to Columbus for Voracek, the #8 and 3rd.

Richards talks with at least 3 teams, maybe to LA for Schenn and Simmonds.

Cap set at $64.3m

Signing of Bryzgalov imminent?

EDIT: Richards for Schenn, Simmonds and pick now being reported as done!!!

Earthshaking stuff for Flyers fans!

My fn jaw is on the ground! I am flabbergasted right now. I ABSOLUTELY never saw the Richards situation coming...never. I'm just stunned. Shenn supposedly has huge offensive upside. I have to let this one settle in. WOW.

I've let it settle in a bit, and I am pretty happy. They gave up a lot, but they got their goalie, some needed young size on the wings, a bunch of picks, and Schenn is frankly a better prospect than Richards and Carter ever were.

I blogged about in detail;

I agree with all you said but it's still a shocker. Love the draft picks and i am excited to see Schenn play. Simply put, its a big day in Flyers history. I'm heading over to read your blog!

Some bold moves for the Orange crush to say the least. I like both Carter and Richards a lot, they are at their prime age and Philly will miss some of their grit. They got their goaltender but at 31 and a long term contract it'll remain to be seen how that will work out for both parties. Voracek and Simmonds need to sign new contracts but with the cap going up that shouldn't be an issue and I am sure that they may have more moves to make on draft day. Guys like C. Giroux should be in their prime light with these moves. As for the CBJ, I am pretty sure that R. Nash is really looking forward to be playing with Carter, the center man he never had in COL.

Also LA is going to be much tougher to deal with in the West, deep in the middle, they may just have to deal away Smyth soon.

I think LA gets better with Richards and Kopitar as 1-2 centers, though I'm thrilled to be getting Schenn on our end.

I hate to break it to CLB, but Carter is a terrible passer. His ability to bring out the best in Nash will be limited other than to divert attention as Carter has the heavy shot and speed that demands attention.

The Flyers now have plenty of room to sign Simmonds and Voracek, but they need to save some room for one more forward. Simmonds (23), Voracek (22) and Schenn (20) however will not be able to replace Carter and Richards' (each 26) production next year. I have no doubt in time though that Voracek and Schenn will continue to get better.

Also I have no problem with Bryz's contract length. Early 30s is prime years for goalies, and he's signed until he's 40. Thomas is signed to 39, and Luongo has a 12 year contract that runs until he is 42.

Simmonds is an awesome pick up they will love him in Philly.

If he stays on track he could make it as a top 6 forward, maybe, at times ,
Ill miss him .

I am so glad Carter is gone. The way he would always shrink in the playoffs was especially noticeable when you had little Danny Briere scoring goal after goal. I'm somewhat sad about Richards since he was so immense in the 2010 playoffs, but he'd still be in Philly if he hadn't refused to change his behavior.

Nice blog, Naples. A good antidote to the-Flyers-cup-window-is-closed talk I've seen from some Flyers fans online. Like they could win the cup rotating backups in goal and paying Carter 5+ million to play from early October to mid April.

I will miss Richards. He had a poor season last year, and frankly I thought he looked out of shape down the stretch. Still, he can do a lot of things, pass, shoot, hit, kill penalties.

Carter, I won't miss so much. Carter is such a tease with his speed and the chances he gets, but he has no moves whatsoever, his shot release is slow and he never picks corners. He just hopes to overpower the goalie. I'm sure I'm not the only Flyers fans whose most vivid memories of Carter in the playoffs are getting injured the last 2 years, and somehow getting stoned on an open net in the final minutes of elimination games against the Pens and Hawks.

Not surprising the Oils pick Nugent-Hopkins first overall and get Smitty back to help the youngsters.

Winnipeg JETS are back and picked M. Scheifele who jumped a few spots and ended being picked 7th overall. A kid with a lot of character and grit that will gel well with the Jets.

Sharks trade two good young players in D. Setoguchi and C. Coyle (a lot of offensive skills with this guy) plus their first rounder this year to Minny as Brent Burns returns to SJ and will add much depth to the Sharks' D.
