MLB Playoffs 09.
Anything can happen in the first round of playoffs, especially when they're best of 5. Two very intriguing match-ups to look for: Cards-Dodgers in the NL and Angels-Bosox in the AL. Pretty evenly matched, they may and should go the distance, I think the closer will be the factor in those two series.
NYY are too strong for the Twins minus J. Morneau and how much left is in the bullpen for MIN. Will COL repeat their feat of 07? Young pitchers, but their inconsistency will be perfect for the Phillies who should advance to the next round.

I'm not one to promote violence, but CB Bucknor better wear a crash helmet and flak jacket when he comes to Boston this weekend. I'll give the Angels credit for sure as they most certainly win that game anyway, but holy hell, MOVE INTO POSITION so you can maybe see the tags if they happen...as they did. For christ's sake.
And tonight he's behind the plate. I won't be surprised if Beckett and Varitek call for a chest high fastball and Varitek just oooops, misses it!
I digress, huge win for the Angels, MUST win tonight for my beloved BoSox.

I do not believe I have seen so many missed calls by the umpires before than what I have seen so far in these playoffs.
It started with the Tigers/Twins play in game (most notably the called third on Polanco) and continued last night. The foul ball call on Mauer's hit down the line was just incredible. The dude is ten feet away and he blows that call? My son and I were just in disbelief. There is a great photo on Yahoo of the ump looking right at it.
I do not think the strike zone graphic is a good thing for the umps as it just shows how inconsistent they are. It will be interesting to see if they continue to show that.

Ahhh, I'm going to bed this evening knowing the Cards got swept. Now, I have this stupid ol' grin on my face that I think is going to last all weekend long!!!!
Such a shame after a great great season. Unfortunately, Cards fans will only remember how this one ended.

Eh, that'll be part of it. I'll also remember it as the year they had 2 legit Cy Young candidates & a MVP (something you don't see too often).TheGamer2 wrote:Ahhh, I'm going to bed this evening knowing the Cards got swept. Here's to every analyst picking the Cubs to win the division (again) next year, only to be out of the race by august...

Actually most analysts are lemmings that take the easy route, and pick the team that won the year before, so I suspect they will predict that Wainwright and Piniero will repeat their career years from 2009 and suggest the Cards will win again.greggsand wrote:Here's to every analyst picking the Cubs to win the division (again) next year, only to be out of the race by august...
Cubs had a bad seed that not only poisoned the clubhouse but also sucked on the field. I suspect every effort will be made so Milton Bradley will be gone next year.
Also, Dave Duncan is pretty pissed at the way Cards management treated his son prior to trading him, so there's a chance that he won't be back next year. So we'll see how well those overachieving Cards pitchers do without him next season.

I've seen lots of Cubs "wishful thinking" that Duncan leaves. Duncan goes where LaRussa goes. Unless he just flat-out retires, I wouldn't get your hopes up.TheGamer2 wrote:Actually most analysts are lemmings that take the easy route, and pick the team that won the year before, so I suspect they will predict that Wainwright and Piniero will repeat their career years from 2009 and suggest the Cards will win again.greggsand wrote:Here's to every analyst picking the Cubs to win the division (again) next year, only to be out of the race by august...

I was glad to see the Cubs commit to Lou Piniella for another season. I think the game has past that old man by...

But the fact that when during the regular season, some pitchers don't follow the scouting report and actually throw pitches over the plate, he can carry the team in stretches. I'm of the mind though that he needs to take a good 3-5 weeks off during may-june with injury, so he can come back and get hot during july-sept. Lou has already said he won't be leading off next year, so hopefully hitting in the 5th or 6th spot will help him.
