Claimed FAs this season are below
Ok it's time for me to reveal how Free Agency is going to work this year. I'm doing this now so people can tear apart my idea (can't take all the credit it's a mish mash of one jared sent me a while back) and get all their opinions out of the way.
I think we can all agree that last years idea didn't work, so here is the new one. Also please note I am explaining for this year and then going forward as there is a slight timing change. Keep in mind the high number of real NFL playes that hit the FA market.
How it works
Each player will have a random chance of declaring for free agency based on age. The age breakdowns for possible declares are as follows:
25 years old = Tier 1 - 15%
29-30 years old = Tier 2 - 10%
34+ = Tier 3 - 15%
If you have any players in these age ranges, they will then be sorted by Overall Rating and then given a random chance to declare free agency.
The chance they will declare for Free Agency is based on their age Tier (age is for current season not next season) and their Overall rating.
Overall Rating Breakdown percentage:
90+ = 15%
80 - 89 = 10%
79 and below = 5%
As an example: Ryan Clady my left tackle is a 94 Overall (15%) and is 25 (15%) so there is a 30% chance he will declare for free agency.
No team will have more then 5 players declare for Free Agency
So the next logical questions is if there are only 5 how do you determine if say 8 players were randomly chosen.
I will start doing the random calculation with the highest overall down.
For example on the Broncos:
1. Champ Bailey (98 OVR - Age 33)
2. Ryan Clady (94 OVR - Age 25)
3. Peyton Hillis (90 OVR - Age 25)
I will run down the whole list until I am through the list or 5 players have declared. It is possible a team may have no one declare, or just 1 or 2 players.
Franchise and Transition Tags
This is where we are going to differ from the real NFL. After you know whom on your team is declaring for Free Agency you can apply these tags.
Transition Tag - You have one (1) transition tag and it may be applied to a Free Agent Age 29 and below. This tag is free, meaning you don't have to match an offer (see how do I get FA's below) but a player assigned a Transition Tag will automatically declare for Free Agency the following year and he can't be franchise tagged, he WILL count towards the 5 player limit.
To follow through on my example, I can put a Transition Tag on Clady. But next year he is a Free Agent and if i want him back I need to be the highest bidder.
Franchise Tag - You have one (1) franchise tag, this can be applied to anyone. The franchise tag allows you to match the winning offer if you choose and can afford it. This could be costly obviously, the up side is the player DOES NOT automatically go into the FA pool next year. He still may if he meets criteria and is randomly chosen, but it doesn't happen automatically like the transition tag.
How do I get Free Agents
The FA draft is gone. This will be a blind bidding system and will work as follows.
1. Each team will be given 25 FA points instead of the current 10.
2. Before the Rookie Draft we will have a 1 week Free Agency period.
3. Each day owners will submit to me their bids by 9pm CT.
4. I will examine the bids and then post each evening 11pm CT the players who have a bid on them, the team and the bid amount.
5. The process will repeat the next day.
6. If no one bids higher on a player the next day he goes to that team, unless he was franchised tagged. See 6a.
6a. A team who has a franchised tag player claimed has to say they will match the offer by 3pm CT the following day. Thus allowing the owner who is now losing the player to utilize those points.
7. These 25 points are your total points for the entire year
8. On the last day of the FA signing week the highest bid wins, if their is a tie it will go to the team who had the last highest bid.
Example: So I think Clady is worth keeping, but would prefer to use my transition tag on someone else. So I franchise tag him. I look at the list of players, whoa Chris Johnson is on the market (FA tagged), that's going to be a bidding war. So first night Jets are the high bid on CJ for 5 points, next night Giants with 7 and the Rams bid 4 on Clady.
3rd night no further bids on Clady, I want to use those 4 points elsewhere so I let him go to 34 and the Rams.
Fast forwarding night 6 comes and the Giants are still the high bid on CJ but now it is up to 16 points. Final night comes along and the giants don't want to take a chance so they bid 17 points on CJ, good moved because those sneaky Niners bid 17 trying to steal him away. since the Giants has the last high bid on night 6 they get him, unless the Todd can match it. Todd has spent 11 points, he can't match the CJ bidding war so the Giants now have him.
Timing - READ THIS
For this season I will be figuring out who the FA's are next week after the trading deadline. This is for this season only.
Next year I will list the FA's before the end of week 1. Thus after the Rookie Draft and after the FA signing week. This will allow teams to plan for the rookie draft and also make trades if they want.
All FA's will be released into the pool, you can as always release additional players before the Rookie Draft.
Well that's a lot to swallow, hopefully no one jumped off a ledge. I'll listen to comments and other "stuff" but I've thought long and hard about this and in the end you'll have to trust me like you did with the FA points.
This is a lot of work on me, but I feel it will vastly improve the league interaction and possible movement of players.
