OT: Mac fans: Leopard Dock Design

Post by Sport73 »

For any of the Mac fans here who have upgraded to Leopard and want:

1. A little more sex appeal to the 3D dock
2. A consistent icon to represent each Stack

See below. I've redesigned my dock with a Tinted glass effect, new indicators and separators, and 'bins' to hold each stack of applications/files. I can provide source files and instructions for install (VERY easy) to anyone interested.

Very cool. I positively hate the new dock appearance in Leopard and would love to jazz mine up. I assume this would work with the dock on the side?

Are these some secret files?

Apple doesn't make it easy to apply different themes but there's nothing to specifically prohibit hacking.

Sorry for the delayed response.

These are easy files to edit; essentially you just have to look in the ..\System\Library\CoreServices\Dock.app package resources and change a few PNG's. Designing them so they look good when laid on the '3D plane' is the trick.

For those interested in my Dock design, you can download it along with instructions here:

This is a website I'm starting to provide myself an outlet for all of my tech obsessions. Let me know what you think of the basic site design etc.; it's obviously far from finished.

I tried it and it looks pretty cool. I like it better than the default dock. Is it possible to keep the little "lights" that show up under an open program? Perhaps that might look cool on the black background.

EDIT: I figured out how to use the original "indicators" but I'm not sure I like it. If they were a more vibrant blue, like an LED light, maybe they would look better. I'll stick with the arrows now

Thanks for the info Sport. One BIG question though...If I do this, is it easy to revert back to the original dock if I want to?

Just make sure to back up the files the instructions tell you to delete. You can than use your backups to revert back to the old dock.

It's as easy to go back as is it to put the new ones in place; all you're doing is replacing some image files. Even if you didn't back them up, you can easily get them on the web or from a fellow DSP'r.

Glad the group is enjoying the dock. Let me know if you have any suggestions for phase 2.

Like i said in an earlier post. Maybe some vibrant blue indicators?
