Dan Patrick Leaving ESPN

There were rumors last week that he was going to be the new host of Price is Right. He is one of the few on ESPN I actually enjoy.

Good riddance. He sucks.
I've always thought Patrick was a prime poster boy for what ESPN has become over the last 15 years -- style over substance.
Take care,
PK

ESPN's sport-specific reporters are pretty solid, for the most part. But its "hosts" and "anchors" are almost all self-important tools, as Inuyasha said.
Take care,

Speaking of ESPN homer calls, who did, "I don't think that one's playable" (usually spoken with drawn-out pauses between the words)? I'm talking mid-'90s Sportscenter here -- was it Patrick or Olbermann? Whoever it was -- was that an original, or did he just swipe it from some other broadcaster? Always wondered about that one.Inuyasha wrote:

That sounds like an Olbermann line to me. No idea if it was original though.cootdog wrote:Speaking of ESPN homer calls, who did, "I don't think that one's playable" (usually spoken with drawn-out pauses between the words)? Dan Patrick used to be one of my favorite sportscenter guys, because as has been said, he was pretty low key with his humor (except for some hideous golf calls - "NOTHING but the bottom of the cup"). I've never listened to his radio show, and stopped watching sportscenter years ago. His leaving ESPN is the end to one of my last connections to ESPN and sportscenter. End of an era for me.
Doesn't that describe 90% of sports TV and radio? Radio is probably worse than TV.Inuyasha wrote:I dont like any ESPN people. They think they are so self important and a gift to all of us. Especially that no talent berman.

Get a new act indeed! Berman is like a washed up 1960's comedian who just doesn't "get" contemporary humor.
I do like Dan Patrick though. Like others have said i prefer his low key humor to the over the top "look at me and my glorious opinions" shtick that everyone else does. I never watch sports center anymore and i pretty much stopped listening to sports radio as well, so i can't say i'm a "fan" of Patrick. I just prefer him over all the other a-holes.

oh come on, Dan wasn't the worst guy they had. Plus, I grew up with that dude & sportscenter. I'll miss him a bit.
PK, when hasn't sportscenter been about style? That's why no one can beat it - it's so damn slick.
They should get rid of S. "lazy eye" Scott though. His voice is just too grating. Why is he always shouting?

For the record, I did not always hate Berman/ Patrick and the rest of the ESPN crew. In the 80s , they were a breath of fresh air and you could really tell they had a passion about sports and were more like fans. Remember Patrick was on that CNN sportscenter show in Atlanta with Vince Cellini which I preferred more than sportscenter.
But in the 90s, around the time when Olbermann joined SC and his SC with Patrick became 'big', all those guys heads got big as well. That's when it was more about ME than being fans covering sports.
I can't stand any of those guys. Even some of the guys on espn news have become annoying. And giving shows to guys like screamin A Smith and Jim Rome does not help.

How easily you forget the early days of Lou Palmer and George Grande. Back then, CNN "Sports Tonight" with Nick Charles and Fred Hickman was neck-and-neck with "SportsCenter" in the ratings. Patrick was a CNN anchor and reporter back then.greggsand wrote:PK, when hasn't sportscenter been about style? That's why no one can beat it - it's so damn slick.
Then in 1989, ESPN hired Patrick and started to pull away from Nick and Hick. Plus ESPN got a lot slicker in the next couple of years, too.
Take care,
PK

Geez you guys have such high standards.
What's the comparison? The know-nothings on the main networks? Or the ancients like Vin Scully, Red Barber, Chick Hearn?
At least these guys are knowledgeable about the sports.
I don't see Berman or Patrick as anywhere near Rome or Stephen A Smith.
Anyways, it's just sports, so they try to be a bit entertaining instead of just announcing scores. If you want that, you can get that in the 5-minute sports segment on the local newscast or on radio from a nondescript announcer reading wire copy.
At least these guys write their own copy and are able to extemporize about the subject.
Really, CNN Sports is better? You can still catch one of the guys -- I think it's Vince Cellini -- doing World Sports on CNN International. Okay and competent but segments are short so they don't delve into anything in depth. CNN also had that blond guy with the booming voice. So even they had a little schtick.

Back in the day, that CNN sports show was better than what SC had to offer, and it was only 1/2 hour. Their 'Play of the Day' segment at the end of each show probably got them the ratings. Remember also back then, CNN was the prominent Cable network. Nowadays, CNN Sports is pretty non-existent.wco81 wrote:Geez you guys have such high standards.
