Mayweather-De La Hoya
Why the hell did Oscar stop throwing the jab? It was effective, it neutered Mayweather's far superior speed somewhat, and it won Oscar rounds. Amazed me that Oscar couldn't even tell Larry Merchant after the fight why he stopped using it.
Honestly, Mayweather didn't impress me much as a fighter but is a superb boxer. I'd love to see Mayweather go against more of a brawler, street-fighter type than De La Hoya and see if his speed could prevail like it did tonight. Mayweather fought a very tactical, counter-punching fight.
Neither fighter was hurt much at all. Mayweather had Oscar slightly wobbly in the fifth, but that was it. Oscar never threatened to put Mayweather's ass on the canvas.
Still, nice to see a boxing match get the attention it deserves. I really enjoy the sport, much, much more than mixed martial arts. There's a purity of boxing in the ring -- definitely not out of it -- that always has appealed to me.
Plus it was cool that my father and uncle, both big fight fans, joined my brother, friends and I to watch the fight at a buddy's house tonight. My 78-year-old dad and his brother grew up with the fights, when boxing was a big deal.
I'd like to see a rematch, but I doubt it will happen because I just don't see any way that De La Hoya could beat Mayweather. Pretty Boy's speed, tactics and defense are just too much for De La Hoya, who still was very game and very brave tonight.
Take care,
PK

I agree PK. I'm also glad to see a fight (other than UFC, etc.) get some attention. My brother, who is pretty much a boxing historian, told me the fight would go exactly as it did...no major occurrences, kinda boring, and a Mayweather decision.
How much of a circus are both Mayweather's uncle and dad? Jesus. I watched the HBO series "24/7" leading up to the fight and was hoping Mayweather would get his ass kicked just because his dad and uncle. Oh well.

I'm not sure how much of a circus they are rather than an example of how repeated blows to the head can cause brain damage.Diablo25 wrote:I agree PK. The first interview Larry Merchant did with Mayweather Sr. during the undercard must have lasted three rounds, and the guy said nothing of substance! Glad to see Merchant cut him off in the post-fight interview.
Mayweather is a great fighter, but even if his retirement is bullsh*t, and I think it is, he's not going to be the guy to save the sport. He fights way too tactically and defensively to draw non-boxing fans into the sport.
Boxing needs a slugger, a brawler, to draw people into the sport. Or at least a tactician who can turn on the power when the chance presents itself. It doesn't have to be a heavyweight, although that class still attracts the most attention. Just look at the Hagler-Hears brawl, still one of the most furious bouts I've ever seen, at how the lower weight classes still can have marquee slugfests.
Take care,
PK

You're right, Dela Hoya should have continued to throw the jab. I had him winning through 7 rounds. He pressed the action and that goes a long way with me. Mayweather's style is so boring. He and Winky Wright are two of the best fighters in boxing but both are way to cautious. Although I can appreciate their style, I'd rather watch paint dry...
I'm anxious to see Miguel Coto fight Zab Juda. Coto might be strong enough to give Mayweather trouble. Last night Mayweather looked as big and strong as Dela Hoya. Coto is a guy that may be strong enough to bull Mayweather aorund.
Btw - last night's fight did nothing to help boxing. The casual fan than tuned in had to be disappointed with Mayweathers cautious style... I know I found it boring.

Yep, I'm thinking of grabbing Cotto and Judah and seeing if some guys want to come over and chip into the kitty. That should be a fun, fun fight.
Last night's fight was a great exhibition of boxing tactics. It was not a very entertaining fight.
Take care,

Dream Match.
the match that would be the fight of the decade would be pacquiao - mayweather at 140 or 135(pushing it for pbf to come down to this weight). i think that pacquiao could balloon up to welterweight status and keep his speed and aggression. that fight would 'war test' mayweather to the extreme. another thing that would be interesting to see is what type of s**t mayweather would spit at pacman...cuz if you watch the morales - pacquiao II fight, you can see 'pretty boy' in the background jumping and hollaring for manny to knock the hell out of morales. watch the fight, you will see the whole mayweather possee about 8 rows up from the front, cheering the pacman on...the buildup for this mega fight would be TREMENDOUS..but mayweather better not pull some s**t and wear the colors of the philippines on his shorts and boots with shirts saying "Mayweather loves the Philippines".
with the amount of pressure pacman can apply for 12 rounds, speed, and power (yes, pacman would be moving up weight class - - BUT the power will still be felt on pretty boy's face), mayweather couldn't handle it...i have started to lose respect for mayweather and he is the perfect villain in boxing - - only because of his hoodlum posse!!! roger mayweather and floyd mayweather, sr. is going to tarnish pbf's legacy...
for this fight to happen, pacman MUST destroy juan manuel marquez and claim the super featherweight championship...not just outpoint or decision JMM, but actually obliterate and end him...then he can legitimately call out PBF and fight at 135 (a push for PBF) or 140...and then BOTH fighters can hang up the gloves after this fight...pacman to continue his political career (what a joke!) and pbf can do the whole movie and music mogul thing and try to become the next diddy...
basically - - PACQUIAO (vs.) MAYWEATHER - - TRUE FIGHT OF THE DECADE!!!

I miss the days where a big boxing match was actually exciting. I'm not taking anything away from the tactician that is Mayweather, or the "beauty" that is a very skilled boxer, but come on, that fight put the B in boring.
My father has always loved boxing. I recall being a young kid and having to take a nap after school so I could stay up late and watch that nights fight. It was guys like Haglar, Hearns, Leaonard, Duran, Benitez, Mancini. These guys got in the ring to fight, some of them got in the ring to brawl. Either way, it was exciting to watch.
I also have a problem with the amount of money these guys made on Saturday night. I heard 30 million for Oscar and 10 for Mayweather, as someone said previously, these guys walked out of the ring with hardly a scratch. Hell, it was like watching Dancing with the stars, only i've seen those dancers take more damage than either of these guys on Saturday.

Mayweather's unscathed mug was a credit to his hand speed and elusiveness. Oscar sure tried to hit him, throwing a hell of a lot more punches, but couldn't land as many.FifaInspected wrote:I also have a problem with the amount of money these guys made on Saturday night. But you cats are right: PBF may be effective, but he's pretty dull to watch unless you appreciate a boxing clinic.
It's like the difference between Ichiro and Albert Pujols. Ichiro is effective as hell at getting on base and slapping hits to all fields -- a supremely valuable player. So is Pujols, but he thrills people by launching bombs into the next area code.

I did my best to have willpower, but finally gave in and ponied up the $55 for the fight. I knew it would be on HBO for free next week but I didn't want to wait and read what happened.
PBF did what he had to do (as always). As PK said, the guy is a great boxer. Oscar gave a really good effort. I too (as everyone) wondered why he went away from the jab. It just made no sense to stop using it when it was so effective.
As for the scoring, my heart had Oscar, but my brain told me PBF won it. I still found it interesting that the last judge who scored the fight for Floyd had him winning the 12th round (the other 2 judges gave it to Oscar). If that judge gives it to Oscar, there would have been a draw.
I don't want to see a rematch. It would be more of the same, and probably end the same way. It's easy to think that Oscar could use that jab next time, keep agressive, and win it. Of course PBF would probably make adjustments as necessary too.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Oscar fight again. I'm sure he doesn't want to go out on a losing note. Problem of course though is to end with the "W," he will be chancing another defeat. I see Oscar and Trinidad hooking up again. Not sure when the last time Tito fought though...anyone?

I got the fight (in HD whoo hoo!). I think I'm finally done with boxing though. I enjoyed the fight for the most part, but never really got that 'rush' I used to get from these things.
I just don't know what to make of the sport anymore - too much guaranteed $$, nothing reckless about the boxers, too many belts, and when the fight ends I shrug my shoulders and change the channel.
Are there even any heavyweights anymore? I see footage of some 7-footer from the Eastern Block on sportscenter, then they're gone.
I think the more people see how these guys end-up in their 50's & 60's(healthwise), the more people demand safety in the ring, and the two probably can't co-exist.
UFC? Does nothing for me at all. Oh well..............

Boxing will return to it's glory days when it shows up on regular TV. When the whole world can see a match like Ali Frazier, then it will be back. Won't happen becuase of the money.

Good point, John. Even HBO would work.JRod wrote:Boxing will return to it's glory days when it shows up on regular TV. When the whole world can see a match like Ali Frazier, then it will be back. Won't happen becuase of the money.
Tyson became a huge draw because he was a monster. But the heavyweight unification series on premium cable -- was it HBO or Showtime? -- also helped propel Tyson into the stratosphere of popularity. It seems like there was a Tyson fight on HBO or Showtime about every six to nine months early in his career.

Re: Dream Match.
Floyd is the P4P#1best boxer, 100% no doubt. But is he the best P4P#1 fighter, I don't think so. I think the p4p best fighter who happens to box is Manny Pacquiao.PhiPsi1 wrote:the match that would be the fight of the decade would be pacquiao - mayweather at 140 or 135(pushing it for pbf to come down to this weight). i think that pacquiao could balloon up to welterweight status and keep his speed and aggression. that fight would 'war test' mayweather to the extreme. another thing that would be interesting to see is what type of s**t mayweather would spit at pacman...cuz if you watch the morales - pacquiao II fight, you can see 'pretty boy' in the background jumping and hollaring for manny to knock the hell out of morales. watch the fight, you will see the whole mayweather possee about 8 rows up from the front, cheering the pacman on...the buildup for this mega fight would be TREMENDOUS..but mayweather better not pull some s**t and wear the colors of the philippines on his shorts and boots with shirts saying "Mayweather loves the Philippines".with the amount of pressure pacman can apply for 12 rounds, speed, and power (yes, pacman would be moving up weight class - - BUT the power will still be felt on pretty boy's face), mayweather couldn't handle it...i have started to lose respect for mayweather and he is the perfect villain in boxing - - only because of his hoodlum posse!!! roger mayweather and floyd mayweather, sr. is going to tarnish pbf's legacy...

If someone out there can take it to PBF it is Pacquiao...
When he fought Morales for the 3rd time, he balloned to 147lbs for fight night. Still carried the power and speed with him on fight night. A fight @ 140lbs or catch weight of 142lbs, would make for a great fight. It would be interesting to see how Floyd deals with someone who is just as quick/fast if not faster and see how he deals with the pressure and power-shots.
Pac WILL walk through Marquez if the fight does happen. Manny is not the same fighter when they fought in 03. Better defence, better footwork, and a potent right hook are all part of Pac's game now, thanks to Freddie Roach. Marquez had a hard time disposing of Jimrex Jaca! Jaca ain't no Pacquaio!
Alas, I don't think it will happen... I can totally appreciate the sweet science and skills Floyd brings, but it sure is boring, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Big deal, Floyd beat a 34 ODLH, as he should!

Whether Boxing returns to your regular schedule tube or not, the big names are missing. And that's why it'll remain on cable pay events. For now. Just look at the recent numbers posted today. De La Hoya's fight with F. Mayweather Jr just set a record for most televised buys for a fight, surpassing Mike Tyson's second fight with E. Holyfield and making it boxing's richest event.
A total of 2.15 million households paid $54.95 for the fight, generating revenue of $120 million. If you multiply the 2 million plus people that bought the event by say four or five buddies per household and that's about 10 million people that watched the fight, not bad for a struggling sport. But then again, the two popular boxers had a lot to do with it.
