How the hell this guy walked away is beyond me. Watch till the end when they show the closeup of his shoes flying off. Simply amazing.

I don't know what's more ridiculous, that the dude walked away or that the analyst said, "Wow, I can't believe he made a 720," as the guy was lying on the bottom of the ramp, motionless.
What a tool.
ESPN should just engrave the "Biggest Hit" ESPY for 2008 right now for this kid. No need to conduct voting.
Take care,
PK

You obviously didn't watch much of it. He had about 5 perfect through balls to teammates in the first couple minutes. And BTW, that phenom was signed by Man. U already.Danimal wrote:It was awesome how he passed the ball once in that whole video. Must be great to be on his team.

db, are you basing that on the YouTube videos of him? In the CNN video linked to in this thread, he passes the ball twice and one of those could be interpreted as being something else.dbdynsty25 wrote:You obviously didn't watch much of it. The kid is better at 9 years old than I am at 22, and I know I shouldn't be jealous of the little git but...

I don't care if it was the bastard offspring of Hawk, Bucky Lasek and Bob Burnquist.SEMINOLE wrote:Thats the "god" Tony Hawk. Just because he's the greatest skateboarder of all time doesn't give him a pass on making such a stupid statement when a guy is laying on the deck and millions are wondering if the kid is alive or paralyzed.
It was a f*cking stupid thing to say, fawning over a trick while a kid was prone on the deck in one of the worst extreme sports accidents ever.
Take care,
PK

I just watched that and I didn't get the impression that Tony Hawk was a tool at all for any of his comments. He was obviously concerned about the kid by everything else he said. Seems to me as if he was trying to put a positive spin on a very negative situation by mentioning that the kid just performed a trick that nobody else in the world has ever done. I could understand if he said something like "Wow, he just nailed the 720 but couldn't get the 540." I don't know, I just don't think he was fawning over the trick like you suggest.
It is extremely awesome that the kid walked away from that. It takes huge coconuts to perform those kind of stunts on a ramp like that and I've always thought there is no way I'd ever be able to do anything like that. Does anybody know if he had any kind of injuries after that? If he walked away without anything more than bruising than it's a miracle.

I was thinking the same exact thing, for all we knew at the time dude could have been dead, then cue the announcer "wow a 720...." friggen tool.pk500 wrote:I don't know what's more ridiculous, that the dude walked away or that the analyst said, "Wow, I can't believe he made a 720," as the guy was lying on the bottom of the ramp, motionless.

Burnquist (sp) should have given the guy that fell his gold and taken the silver. I know his jump was awesome as well, but that would have been the class act.

I'm totally with pk on this one. That was the first thing that came to my mind as well after that gem came out of his mouth. Not 5 seconds have passsed after this guy slams to the floor from 2 stories up, we don't know if he's permanently paralyzed, and the only thing that comes to Tony Hawk's mind to say is, "wow, I can't believe he did a 720"???!!
Tool is right.
Tool is right.
I agree with Scoop's take on this. I agree the comment was jarring, but I don't think it stemmed from Hawk caring more about the trick than the kid. Call him a bad broadcaster, sure, but I think the comment came from him struggling through a tough moment, not from him worshiping the trick.ScoopBrady wrote:I just watched that and I didn't get the impression that Tony Hawk was a tool at all for any of his comments. I can agree with that view, dude should have just kept his mouth closed I guess.webdanzer wrote:I agree with Scoop's take on this. But then you run into the issue that it's his job to talk. I'm sure he just couldn't think of what to say. I mean, he did start it with that is one of the worst crashes I have ever seen. I give him a pass...it's not like he's a professional broadcaster. He's a skater that has a skateboarding empire. Sheesh, give the guy a break.Boltman wrote:I can agree with that view, dude should have just kept his mouth closed I guess.

I agree with Db. I think Tony Hawk just exhibited a little inexperience when it comes to dealing with a scary situation during a broadcast. You gotta remember most of the viewers are people in their teens and 20s. I think he tried to maybe calm everyone's emotions, but it didn't come off that way.
Just glad he's ok. I would thought for sure he would of broke his legs.

I keep watching the replay, and the impact is so damn severe that his shoes launch off like they are damn rockets! It is so amazing that he just comes off of that with nothing more than a concussion. Simply amazing.sportdan30 wrote:I agree with Db. I think Tony Hawk just exhibited a little inexperience when it comes to dealing with a scary situation during a broadcast. I thought his tailbone would have been busted upon impact. I thought for sure after seeing that, even though he walked off, there were going to be long time problems arising from that fall.
His helmet maker need to start using that spill, with his head slinging backwards onto the bottom of the ramp in a new add campaign.
