My wife's '05 Mazda Tribute has a "Sirius-ready" deck installed. She didn't want Sirius when we bought it, but we're changing cars soon and...well, I do
I've been combing AVS and the interwebs in general, but I'm a bit confused as to how to go about getting this done. I called the dealer, and the psychopath there said it would be $360 for the parts and $300 for the labor. That's not going to happen. What are my options here? I'd like to take advantage of the installed controls rather than buying a portable and having it installed.
I know a bunch of you guys have satellite. Any experience in this area?

Just go to best buy or circuit city and have them do it. It'll be a hellova lot cheaper to do it that way. If you have any specialized audio stores where you live, that would work too. You'll get butt raped if you take it to the dealer (as with almost anything).
All you're going to need is a Sirius receiver and then it needs to be wired to the deck. That's it.
My sister got her Explorer done for a little over 200 bucks installed. The receiver is like 125-150 and then installation.
Just so you know - there are some very big differences between the add-on receivers and the Sirius ready decks...
Almost all of the add-on receivers sport a guide-like interface where you can scan channels and see what songs/shows are playing...this can be a hazzard while driving, but is very nice. I've not seen ANY in dash systems that offer this - factory or otherwise.
Also, most offer 20 song memory functions where you bookmark a favorite song and you get a notice about 10 seconds ahead of time of what the song is and what channel and just push the button and it jumps there. Very nice feature. Again, have not seen this offered on an in-dash system.
I've been trying to find a in-dash receiver that offered these two features and have yet to find one (if anyone knows of one, please let me know)...personally, it isn't a huge deal, but for the wife - she will not do without her guide and favorites list...even if she could get rid of the ugly appendage on the console.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but how do I know which receiver or tuner will work with my existing radio? It's just the stock radio, and all the tuners I see are compatible with actual, reputable manufacturers

the car radios should work with the existing radios.. you just need to find an FM station that doesnt have a signal (they provide a list with the satelite radio itself).. after setting the radio & the satelite radio to the same station, then it should go through the radio

Ah. I was under the impression that certain tuners were designed to work with certain decks, as that's how they're listed (e.g., "compatible with Sony/Kenwood" etc.).

I believe that compatability is only for the external antenna for Sirius-ready decks.

Rob, I just reread you orignal post. BB has Sirius antennas for about $100 + whatever installation charge there is. Have you gone there.

That's probably where I'm headed, but I'm checking my options for installation. Not genearlly thrilled with the Best Buy experience
