OT: Logitech Harmony 880 remote $109
At slickdeals.net it has been pointed out that the logitech Harmony 880 remote can be had for $109 after a massive coupon and a smaller mail in rebate at dell. This is a steal if there ever was one. I don't have this particular model but my older 659 has been great to me. I'm trying to hold back on spending so i may not take advantage of the offer but it would be a shame if i didn't spread the word.

Anyone have any experience with this one? I have a 676 that I adore, but some visiting rugrats did bad, bad things to it. Definitely need to replace the ol' girl. The remote that is, not the kid.

That is a f*cking steal for that remote. I have it and I have reviewed it as well...there are a few threads about it a while back, but this is the one I started.

I still use it to this day and it is by far the best remote I've ever had. Takes a while to get all of the programming perfect, but it's worth the work.

Two questions:
1. Assuming that my systems are all the same, can I just hook this up to my s/w that I've already used to configure my 676 and download the same settings and macros?
2. You seem to indicate that the 676 is still very competitive with this. Seeing as how there is only about a $10 difference is it worth the upgrade or should I just pop for another 676?

Rob:
1. Yes, it is "almost" the same. All of your equipment will still be on the page, but it will need to be reprogrammed for the 880. Very little tweaking will need to be done. The difference for me, was the response time of my TV from the time it turns on to when it's able to change inputs. I had to tweak that time on the 880 when I didn't have to do it on previous models. Like I said, it's almost the same. You may need to do a little timing tweaking, but maybe not.
2. Keep in mind, that review was only after about a weeks worth of use. Now that I've been using the 880 for over a year, I definitely say get it. After everything was tweaked perfectly, it just is a better remote. The 8 programmable buttons (instead of 4 or 6 on previous models) and the rechargable battery are the keys to the 880 and they make it worth the price of admission.

That was quick. Hopefully someone took advantage of it.bdunn13 wrote:expired

DB, does this thing support RF at all? I have a ceiling fan/light that has an RF remote I would like to get rid of along with the following...
ReplayTV
MythTV
360
Tuner
TV
and soon PS3
I saw on logitech's site they have a model that the explicitly mention RF(not in line of site) but that thing retails for around 400(thats as crazy as riding a motorcycle with no helmet).

Amazon has the 880 for $151 plus change shipped (ground shipping) versus list price of $250.
It also has the 890 for about $250 shipped versus list price of $400.
Main difference or maybe the only difference between the 880 and 890 appears to be that the latter works in RF mode? That's nice for some components which support RF remotes. But is it worth $100?
There is also a Harmony 1000, which looks like a PDA with a big touch screen. List price is $500.

That is the only difference...and for some people, yes, that is worth 100 bucks. Being able to hide your components and not have them in plain view is a HUGE draw to a lot of people. And RF version of a decent remote, is pretty sweet.wco81 wrote:Main difference or maybe the only difference between the 880 and 890 appears to be that the latter works in RF mode? the remote is actually designed for PVR users. They work quite nicely. All the controls are right where your thumb rests on the remote.dbdynsty25 wrote:That 670 looks pretty sweet, but I do not like the layout of the pvr controls. That's atrocious. That's the one thing Harmony can't do to save their lives...

They all "claim" they are for PVR users...but just from a functionality standpoint, and a logical standpoint (funny since their name is Logitech), they don't make sense at all. Usually you put ff on the right and rw on the left with play in the middle because those are the three you use the most....but no, not Logitech. I'm sure after you use it for a week, it's fine, but it's just weird.

yeah, I see what you are saying. You eventually get used to where they are. As long as the PVR/DVD controls are not at the very bottom of the remote, I'm okay with it. I hate remotes that have them at the very bottom.dbdynsty25 wrote:They all "claim" they are for PVR users...but just from a functionality standpoint, and a logical standpoint (funny since their name is Logitech), they don't make sense at all. yeah, 670 is $150 at Best Buy. I assume it will be cheaper online. It may not be available online yet, not sure. I went to Best Buy with the intention of buying the 680 but they didn't have it and I liked the 670 a little better.

Yeah, I hated how the DVR functions were on the bottom of the 880...at least most of the way down the remote. I've actually switched over to a company called URC and they put theirs right smack in the middle, perfectly balanced. I was living with the Harmony line because they make the most intuitive remotes. The URCs perform a little better...at least with DVR equiptment I had (DirecTV HD Tivo), but now that I've got a new DirecTV branded DVR, I may go back. The URCs are definitely not asthetically pleasing, but they do perform ridiculously well.
