WE9 Impressions Thread
doesn't anyone actually have it yet?
I picked up a copy at Gamestop today during lunch. As I posted in the other WE9 thread, the only "impression" I can report at this time is that the manual is 47-pages. Even though I am not an online gamer (although I might finally make the jump for this game), I read through the online section and it sounds like a pretty cool set-up: 4 divisions; you start in the lowest and earn promotion through a point system.
I have it. Picked it up along with Arena football.
I have played one match. I Played it on the 2 star level to get reaclimated to the controls. I am very rusty.
I did manage a 2-1 victory in extra time for England over the Czecks . Goals coming from Beckham and Owen.
Its one game but I have that loving feeling.

Update.
I'm seriously considering elevating the annual release of the new Winning Eleven to the status of annual holidays like Opening Day, Fantasy Football Draft Day and the Opening Round of the NCAA Tourney.
Plays like a dream, and I'm loving it so far. Well worth having to play on the smaller, non-HD TV

24 hours before the biggest exam of med school.....and I couldn't resist the urge to pick up WE9:I for the PS2 and get online for a few games - it's sweeeet. I can't say there was zero lag but it's pretty damn good.
Played 6 matches, won three, lost three (two of those by penalties though) - very, very nice. Some of these guys can freakin' PLAY.
Gotta say, with the number of DS'ers here on XBL I'm really temped to pick up a used XB to play the 'box version.
Okay, off to study!!!

The ball is so much more "live" in this version, I'm really having a hard time controlling it. In that regard, it makes WE8 look like FIFA.
Played two games online, lost a squeaker 2-1 then got murdered 4-0. That second guy was just toying with me. I have a LOT to unlearn from both last year's game and developing my game around what the computer always liked to do.

I just played 4 games online with the PS2 version tonight and it is a real different experience. I lost all my games and all my opponents picked Brazil but the games were fun. Closest thing this reminds me of is online hockey since it's full of nonstop action.
There wasn't much lag either in most of the games. One game had one hiccup where it seemed like the system needed to catchup but it was only about a second of it. Games were very smooth and I came away very impressed with the online. I will have to practice with this game offline since it's very hard for someone like me who's a pickup and play gamer.
This game maybe my sole reason now to not sell off my ps2.

I got a chance to play one game, just fired it up on 2* to get acquainted with the xbox controls. I won 1-0 with 70% possession ( was passing alot and trying various things.. didn't really shoot much) Then I went and did some of the training.
Man... that ball is ALIVE! Amazing ball physics... it's been a while since I played any WE/PES games but this does seem like an improvement over PES4 and WE8 physics wise.
I went into some of the training things where you do the tutorials to learn some moves and man some of them piss me off. The one where you do a long dribble while dashing to get around the defender is really annoying. I do what appears to be the exact same thing as in the example video.. FAILED. Try again.. FAILED. Man it pissed me off.
I don't game near as much as in the past... but I'll be playing this off and on. I'm sure to get smoked online. Anyone who also sucks want to hook up on XBL?

It's been a long time coming and WE9 did not dissapoint. I think I played nearly 8 games, all but 2 of my matches were lag free. Those two matches were pretty laggy and against the same guy so maybe it was something between him and I.
The brain dead keepers seem to be a thing of the past. The keepers in WE9 respond very well to the situation, it's almost scarey how well they respond.

I'd played a lot of WE8 lately, and there's no question the gameplay is different on WE9 against the cpu. it's much tougher to control the ball on offense.
on defense, staying in front and hitting quick tackle isnt' nearly as effective. I fouled a lot or got sidestepped. it seems positioning is more important on this version. but the cpu actually gets called for fouls.
I scored a variety of ways, and while I didn't score on a free kick, I hit the post pretty early, so I'm looking forward to trying more.
I agree with some others that the ball seems very live. the player interaction is more intense also. lots of jostling affects runs.
I'm excited to play this weekend with some mates both against each other and on same team.

This is my first time with the series, Iam not even a soccer fan but due to the praise here i picked it up. I played 5 games on 3 star level and i didn't even manage to score a goal, in fact i think maybe I got 2 shots on goal that the keeper actually had to stop.
The options are also overwhelming and I need to sit down with the manual, because i don't know wtf I am doing. The CPU takes the ball right down the middle of the field and y guys just kind of sit there and watch him. Is there some kind of setting I have wrong, or is it just the way the game works that I need to manually play a defender if i want any defense played?
I like what i saw, but I have no idea what i am doing and I suck really bad

Join the club. I have now played 4 games on 3 star with only a single goal. I was the same way with WE8 at first but after a while the goals started to come.Danimal wrote:. The key is to remain patient and play it like it is a real soccer game. Passing back, changing sides and slowly building up your attack.
On defense you have to control the defender cause the game will switch you to the nearest defender automatically. I turn down the frequency in the player settings but it still happens.
Jimmy the Deicide and I played 4 games online and I didn't have one hint of lag whatsoever in any of those four games. It was brilliant. But then, Scoop and I played a game, and it was not so good. For me, the first half (I was hosting) was perfectly fine. But the second half for me was all herky-jerky, with the game going slow, then really fast, then slow, then really fast. All my controller inputs were heavily delayed, and it was essentially unplayable for me. Apparently, Scoop had some problems the first half, but the second half was smooth as butter for him. Very strange.
The games against Jimmy filled me with glee, as I was thrilled to play against a human being for the first time in who knows how long. But the one against Scoop was distressing, since the game was basically impossible to play for me in the second half, and there was little to no way to tell trouble was brewing until it was too late.
And oh yeah, watch out for that timer when you are in the team selection area.
The first hour or so I had the game I spent fixing the names of the US team
. I need to see who else is out there and can be 'registered' for the US Nats. However, when we played online, my new names weren't there. I'm not sure what if anything would make that stuff move into the online games, but it will be super frustrating not to have the proper team names for the English and German leagues for online play, at least for a while until we figure them out, I guess. I did notice that in the formations screen, you can load your formations stock online, which is excellent!
Must play more online. . .
