Winning Eleven 9 RollCall
Who here is goign to pick this bad boy up?
I am debating about picking it up because I have WE 8 but will likely pick this up on launch for the online play. I think this will be the GAME for the next few months on this site.

Xbox here. If it turns out it doesn't play well online on XBL and better on PS2, I will consider resurrecting my PS2 for this game.
Why would you be reticent to get the new one if you have the old one? Don't believe the nay-sayers. Each new iteration is a major step forward, even if the changes are not that great individually. Throw in a copy of WE 6 (only two versions old at this stage) and compare it to WE8. I think you'll see what I mean.

I have it pre-ordered. If I can get an inexpensive Samsung or Hitachi drive for my kaput Xbox, I'm in. If not, I'm canceling my pre-order.
Take care,

The gameplay is so realastic and it is just a tough game to play. The game is also so deep that it never gets boring like many sports games.Diablo25 wrote:Man, I wish I like soccer...people rave about this game but I just can't get into soccer. I respect the sport but its just not my cup of tea. What is so great about it?

Soccer or the game?Diablo25 wrote:Man, I wish I like soccer...people rave about this game but I just can't get into soccer. I respect the sport but its just not my cup of tea. What is so great about it?

If you mean the game, then I think the Winning Eleven series depicts the nuances, subtleties, details and gameplay of its sport better than any other sports game series in the history of console gaming. It blurs the line between reality and virtual reality more than any other sports gaming series.
In other words, it's realistic as hell.

Take care,

Diablo:
I'm sure piggie has tried over and over to convert you; just let me say that if you see, in person, the game played at a reasonably high level (like say the US Nats or something), you'd have to be committed to hating the game not to enjoy yourself, especially with a big, enthusiastic crowd, etc. etc.
There have been more than one who have become soccer fans because of this game. Believe it!
Two things make it so special. Firstly, the game of soccer is particularly suited to video games: constant motion, free-flow, not sitting staring at play-calling screens or some Garciaparra-like glove adjustments between pitches, plus the wide-open nature of 'do what you want within the white lines'.
Secondly, this Konami game is simply unparalleled in sports gaming in so many ways. The oponent AI (as in, the CPU in control of the other team, it's substitutions, it's tactics and strategy, it's on-field passing, shooting etc, decisions) is uncannily human. Remember that jolt of amazement with the NFL 2K VIP thing, and how differently everyone's VIP played than the standard CPU-in-control? That's what WE has ALWAYS been like. Sometimes it does things that seem insane, like I've seen it pass back and forth between two players six, seven times in a row, and other bizarre, very un-computer-like behavior. And then, there's the NPC AI (for lack of a better term- maybe teammate AI is better), where your teammates and the opponent's players off the ball behave llke real players, not like the zombies you see in so many sports games, with their lack of off-the-ball movement, etc. They seem to really understand what is happening, filling the attacking spaces, pulling defenders away, getting open for passes, etc. Sure, there are issues on the defensive side at times, but mostly the way the teammates behave is incredibly refreshing in this game, and really make it easy to play even if you've never seen a soccer ball.
This game more than any other (except maybe the most refined fighting games) gives you what you put into it. That is, you can play the game and be successful with just simple passing and basic tactics, no fancy moves or advanced strategies needed to have fun and be successful. But, as you play it and get better (the ML off-season training is amazingly helpful IMO in getting better at various aspects of the game), it keeps getting deeper and deeper. Sure, there are some out there who may have become 'bored' with it for one reason or another, but for my money, every single game I play I do something I've never done before. Not just see something I've never seen before, which is par for the course in this game and those rare games like MVP, but I myself DO something I've never done before, if it's score a goal with some crazy volley, or pull off a dribble move, or whatever it is. There is so much depth to the control, this game is the perfect example of 'easy to learn, hard to master' in terms of player control.
The verisimilitude of this game is second to none as well. Look at a low-res video of a goal compilation and squint a bit, and it is really hard to tell the difference between the game and the real thing (at a similarly bad resolution, small size, etc.) It's the player movement and animation, the superbly realistic ball physics and ball/player interaction, etc. etc. that lends it this verisimiltude. Plus, Konami does an amazing job of making all the players seem to look and move uniquely. You can identify individuals from the widest of views, and tell them apart at a glance. The superstars in the world are uncannily remade in the game. This has always been a hallmark of Konami soccer games from way back. Somehow they can inject so much personality, so much variety into the player models and animations. It really is remarkable.
The Master League, while not ideal in that it isn't a perfect recreation of real-life leagues, is the only franchise-type game I play over many years. It has a real RPG quality to it that I don't get in other franchise modes. A big, big part of this is the massive database of players, which we don't get close to in our sports, because soccer is so international and huge worldwide. In WE6 I must've hit the dread 'GAME OVER' countless times, and every time I restarted, the team I built after a few years was entirely different, much like would happen in an RPG as you create more than one character. New players were discovered, became favorites, the entire tenor of the team would be different, the style of play. Talk about open-ended! In WE8, I am still playing (in year 2012, I think) the same ML team I started the day I got the game. I am rushing through the season to see if I can win the league for the first time before WE9 arrives(won the League Cup and Masters Cup last season, but finished 9th in the league, so all that's left is to steal the league championship from the juggernaut that is Real Madrid). I love my little guys, and they just keep on amazing me.
Finally, in head to head play, there is IMHO no better video game. Again, it's the constant flow of the gameplay and the wide open nature of the sport, and it lends itself perfectly to head to head video gaming. 2 on 2 is even better! Plus, add in the natural handicap allowed by having so many teams available (as opposed to the paltlry 30 or 32 we are used in our American sports), and you can have awesomely competitive games between the rawest noob and the most experienced joystick master.
I could go on and on. Suffice it to say I've had plenty of friends with no interest in the sport get all ga-ga over the game. I've had others who have started MLs and gotten to know some players they bought, and next thing you know they start foillowing the real guy and his real team. One thing leads to another, and BAM, they fall in love with this most universal and amazing of sports (don't get me wrong, I love football and baseball with a deep, deep passion as well, but this is the international game, and the World Cup, every time it happens, is the largest most impactful worldwide cultural event in human history).
Give it a shot, and let piggie give you some pointers. You will not be disappointed I don't think.

Sometimes it seems to me the greater part of the enjoyment I get out of the game is seeing it as a 'ball physics simulator.' Other times, it's like an example of trying to meet the Turing test for AI.Diablo25 wrote:You sir, would be correct in saying pigpen tried to convert meI actually downloaded the demo a year ago (or so) but I never really gave it a chance. Perhaps I will give it a whirl. Anything THAT realistic deserves at least a chance.
I'll be getting the Xbox version, but if it's not BC then I'm probably not going to play online
My original Xbox has been relegated to basement workout duty, and it's not connected to my LAN any more.

Unfortunately, I could never justify the game in words as well as Zeppo did in his awesome game explanation.
I to will have the XBOX version on the 9th and possibly the American PC version as well for modding.
I cannot play online with my PC version of Pro Evo 5 because my copy from EBAY was in Russian and the code wont work on Konami's site to play online. Jimmy was livid at me...hahaha. That is what I get for trying to save a few bucks.
Jimmy and I had close to a 100 games played on Pro Evo 4 PC Online....what a game.

I never got into thi series but after all the good talk about it, I think I may go ahead and buy it.
questions : what version, xbox or ps2, from last years game played better? And What were the differences between the xbox and ps2 versions if any?
You guys seem to be saying it plays better on ps2. If thats the case, I'll pick it up for that system. Only problem is that I do have action replay for xbox and I know a lot of people put up saves which turn the we9 teams into the real teams.

I always enjoyed the PS2 controller better for sports games and WE is no exception. However you can get this converter and still enjoy the game on the Xbox while enjoying whatever game save might be around for the new series, rosters etc, with the AR.
