It's believable that Don would revert to old patterns.
This last episode had made it pretty clear that the old patterns of cheating, lying etc. are all that he has left. He's still clearly marginalized in the office, reduced to sabotaging the Jaguar campaign just to get back at the vile dealership owner. The only market that he still understands and is able to manipulate with the old aplomb is desperate housewives. That pitch he made to Sylvia was the same combination of brilliant and morally indefensible as those he once made for Lucky Strike.

Loved the way the episode compared and contrasted Don & Pete. Pete has turned to womanizing out of a sense of frustration very much the same way that Don does. Unfortunately for him, Pete utterly lacks the guru's innate understanding the in's and out's of lying to women. He can, to my amazement, bait the hook, by doesn't know how to keep the fish on the line indefinitely. Pete aspires to Don's easy amorality, but lacks his mentor's imagination when it comes to spinning the fantasies that his conquests need to understand their place.

Pete's an accounts guy. Don's creative.

Agree on both counts. That said, the old saying is absolutely true: No matter how hot a girl is, there is some guy somewhere who is tired of putting up with her bull$hit. :)

Not really time-period related. I think there are plenty such arrangements like this now. Earn enough to provide for a certain lifestyle, and folks may accept certain things as part of the trade-off as long as their faces are not rubbed in it.

You got to remember back then Divorce was still a social taboo. So many women had to look the other way when their husbands cheated as it was 'boys will be boys' and women were told to just deal with it.

I wasn't around back then but I tend to feel MM exaggerates the infidelity issues of that time.

I recall a Matt Weiner interview last year and I think he said divorce was starting to increase in that time period.

In the early seasons, the Drapers lived near a divorcee single mother which was rare for the time. Hell even Peggy as a single career girl of a certain age would be unusual at the time.

Pete didn't want to marry Trudy, did he? He jumped on Peggy like the night before his marriage. She probably also married for convenience or was doing what her family wanted. Then she dragged him out to the suburbs. He didn't get to have some swanky bachelor pad like Don.

I loved the cork globe/pencil holder on Peggy's desk in the very last scene last night. My parents had the exact same model in our kitchen for my entire childhood/teen years.

Memories.

Just watched my very first episode of Dexter, season 1. I can certainly see myself getting hooked on this show very quickly. Question though. I also have a Boardwalk Empire to watch. Is there a majority preference of which show is better? Obviously, they're very different so maybe it's not a fair comparison.

Never watched Dexter but BWE is FABULOUS. Gritty, real show. Love it.

I watch both and as you said, really can't compare them except to say they're both outstanding. I'll say this and maybe it'll help. I plowed through Dexter once I started it. BWE is fantastic but I didn't have the same "can't wait to get home and watch the next episode" feeling that I did with Dexter.

Good news is you can't go wrong either way, and you have some great tv ahead of you.

Think I'll stick with Dexter as I think it'll be a nice compliment to a slower paced Mad Men. If I didn't work, have kids, in the midst of putting our house up for sale, I might have more time for a few shows. However, with Breaking Bad around the corner (summer), I'm going to have a hard enough time watching these and other misc. shows I have on DVR.

The Office has been uneven since Steve Carell left (and even a little before that) but there have been plenty of funny episodes this season. Still one of the top comedy shows and the last few and finale were a joy to watch for fans of the series, even if they did wrap up about every sub plot with a happy ending. It was something to see the old clips of Jim and Pam and how they grew up over the series run. Loved the quote from Andy at the end about the good ole days.

This is one of the few shows that I will enjoy watching random episodes over and over again in re-runs (like Seinfeld) and may even rewatch again from the beginning.

I really liked "Orphan Black" on BBC America. Very smart and thrilling, with a tremendous acting job by the lead actress. Worth checking out -- it's either on DVD or coming out soon.

Dexter is no Breaking Bad (no show in the history of television can match BB). However, you prolly wont be dissapointed with Dexter if you're a BB fan. To me Dexter is all about Seasons 1, 2, 3. Yup, i loved the addition of Jimmy Smits in Season 3.

by the way, LOCKED UP ABROAD is another show you may wish to check in the future. Don't know if it's ever been mentioned on this message board, but overall the show and its attributes are unbelievable. Following, Breaking Bad, it's my favorite show on television. And even tho it's an apples/oranges comparison (fiction vs non-fiction & serial vs non-serial), i much prefer this series over THE WIRE.

I was just turned on to Rectify, a show on Sundance (their first series actually) written by Ray McKinnon and produced by the same team who produces Breaking Bad. Interesting storylines, solidly acted, seemingly accurate in its depiction of reintegration (I've never spent time in prison so this is a presumption). Really enjoying this one so far.

First season was only a 6 episode run, but it has been picked up for a 10 episode second season.

Finally started watching Mad Men via Netflix earlier this summer. My wife and I are both enjoying the show, some nights watching back to back episodes. We are up to the season 3 finale and will probably watch that tonight.

Hi Carol.
Chuckled all through the opening credits after that scene.

Going to be a sad day 7 weeks from now when this show ends.

Enjoyed last night's episode of the final 8 of Breaking Bad. However, I found myself more detached than usual, primarily because of the long lapse between episodes. I watched all previous shows on Netflix, within a period of a couple months. It just felt a little strange for me trying to get back in to it, especially with the addition of commercial breaks.
