I just think it makes this board (which I consider to be highbrow compared to most gaming boards) seem like a lame Xbox fanboy board when every single thing that's even slightly negative about Sony, no matter how trivial, is posted with glee by certain posters. I don't have a problem with your comments PK... you may think Sony is arrogant but I've never seen you let it color you.
I guess you don't even read the threads regarding user complaints about dead 360's and all the threads critcizing MS lack of follow through on backwards compatibility...

Kazuya wrote:Is the PS3 delaying the launch a big story? Certainly. Reduced units due to manufacturing? Yes. The original story about no rumble in the controller? Sure... all three are big problems that Sony deserves to be called out for. But we've known for months that rumble wouldn't be in the PS3 controller. Now people are outraged because Sony simply stated why it wouldn't be in there? Because Sony *lied* to them? Give me a break. This is a non-story. The only people who are outraged are ironically Xbox fanboys who have no intention of buying a PS3.
Yes, Sony lied to everyone regarding their decision to not include a rumble feature. Non-story? What part of this are you not getting? Every chance you get, Sony gets a free pass on ANY negative information regarding PS3 because YOU find some way to justify what they are doing and have the indignation to question others who disagree with you...unreal.
Kazuya wrote:Also there is never a peep when good news such as HDMI being included in all consoles is announced. Heck, Major Divot wrote a long sermon spinning it into a *bad* thing, and he almost convinced *me*. Like I said before, if it wasn't for people and their agendas I would never say a peep about Sony because otherwise I couldn't care less about them, other that they are a company who I generally have gotten good products from. It's just annoying for me to see this board devolve into a fanboy board. But as they say, that's my problem so I guess I'll have to deal with it.
You have the audacity to accuse others of having an "agenda" when all we are doing is commenting on the avalanche of negative information coming from Sony's very own self-inflicted claims made at E3. So "we" have an agenda? Again, unreal...

Fanboy board? If anything, this forum is about as objective as any forum regarding sports gaming as I have ever been a member of. Ironic you are the one throwing the "fanboy" label around. Considering the constant defense of Sony who's the "fanboy"?

Not when it comes to Xbox... the only things I can recall M$ taking heat for on here is backward compatibility (even that was split as a lot of people like myself gave M$ a pass, thinking they did as much as could be expected) and of course faulty hardware, be it last gen with the drives or this gen with all of the crap. There certainly wasn't the micro-analyzing of every word out of any figurehead or engineer's mouth, whining about specs, complaining about cost (like the 360 was cheap at $400 or something) and just general bitchiness. M$ has made tons of bonehead moves, has had their big honchos contradict themselves numerous times, and we never hear any of it. Meanwhile, *false* rumors about the PS3 like games costing $99 and no upgrading for the $500 unit get three page threads.

Edit: I did a couple of searches and there were a few people here complaining about the 360's cost pre-launch, but not many.

Rumble isn't the only thing subject to legal deliberations.

Most of the features involve cross-licensing of patents and so forth.

Why did MS drop nVidia even when retaining nVidia would have guaranteed backwards-compatibility? Legal/business reasons.

If people really like the games only available on the PS3, they're not going to not buy them because they're lacking support for an oh-so-popular rumble.

Yeah, and how two SKUs was stupid and pointless. The Backwards compatibility was really the only thing they outright lied about. Had they promised more and delivered less, I'm sure there would be even more complaints...but you act like no one criticized MS and that we are all Xbox fanboys at heart. I guess I should go back to playing my PSP....errr, 360.

Because nVidia and MS did not get along and they had numerous disputes over their agreed upon business model. Each company could not WAIT to get away from each other.

You are missing the point. There is really no technical reason justifying the omission of the feature. Sony has HOW MANY MILLIONS of PS2's and add-on DS controllers out there now? You don't think PS2 users are going to complain about a feature they have become accustomed to? I guess we won't have much longer to find out, will we?

I thought the NForce chipset was strictly an AMD thing...if that's the case, would those disappear? Off topic, I know, but that got me thinking.

nvidia makes the nforce4 for intel as well as amd(different version of course).

This would likely mean the end of the amd line of chipsets which is sad if you are an amd fanboy like myself(the nvidia chipsets are the best).. Maybe with amd buying ATI, amd can start making its own chipsets. AMD made their own socket 7 chipset and it rocked.

Sorry for the thread jack, only reason I brought this up was b/c maybe Microsoft has a better relationship with intel than they do nvidia.

Nope. They make Intel versions. Have been for about a year.

I travel quite often to Japan and for the last few years I have said that the BIG S belongs to Samsung. The PS3 is causing some doubters to take the plunge elsewhere and that's fine and dandy, I am not a tech guy, I could care less if a slap shot comes with a rumble or not, what I do care is that when you advertise something to the public, you follow suit six, eight months down the road and not deceit the consumer.

Screw ups happen all the time in big corporations and MS decided to exchange those 360 bought in 05 broken or not, correct? OK, so they admitted their error and they are following suit. An incovenience, sure it is.

Sony is in a mess. Here is the company that was at the vanguard of innovation in consumer electronics in the last three decades of the 20th Centruy only to stumble repeatedly in the new century. The only thing going for them is the Bravia TV series (which I bought last year).

They had EULA on CD's which everyone hated, they have adopted the UMD on the PSP (which I still love btw) but the loading times are a killer and the selections of UMD movies far outnumber the games these days as no one seem to care.

But the latest problem is the huge recall on the batteries which is affecting a lot of people. Here's an idea of how much they'll be losing this year and I think that's just a beginning.

Thanks guys. It's a good thing Intel makes the better cpu's right now...I'll probably be upgrading this Winter sometime. I've been with AMD for years now, and it looks like Intel finally has produced a nice chip with the Conroe cores. But enough of the threadjack.

Not at all, nothing negative about it. Well thought out, no rumors, and most importantly, no hate of a piece of plastic (although you gotta love the first comment at the bottom). This has my official stamp of approval... look for it on all future articles.

Getting back to the story, I don't really feel that Sony has an image problem outside of the few nerds on the Internet. If you walk into Wal-Mart and ask the 10 year old playing Crash Bandicoot on a kiosk what he thinks of Sony, I'm sure he is blissufully unaware of quotes made by Japanese exectuives and Internet rage over HDMI ports. He knows the PS3 is coming and he's looking forward to it... if he can save up enough nickels.

Now if they wanted to get some Internet buffoon like Major Nelson or Reggie to appeal to their hardcore fans, it certainly couldn't hurt. But I don't see it as vital to their long term success...

Unfortunately, the vast majority of 10 year olds don't have enough money to buy a PS3. The majority of parents that I know in our social circle are not interested in paying $500-600 for a video game system. The ones that are interested in a videogame system are jumping all over the PS2 and XBox or Wii and the parents with teenagers or are gamers themselves are not waiting for the PS3, they are buying the 360. Yeah, the 360 is out now and has a nice library of games that should be in full bloom by the Holiday buying season. Most of them have NO CLUE what BluRay means and most have not heard of HD-DVD. What they DO state almost verbatim is "there is no way in HELL I am paying $600 PLUS for some video game system.

Now I realize this only represents a small cross-section of the gaming market, but since I live in a county that is repeatedly mentioned as one of the best places to raise a family in the US, then I think the cross-section is a small indication of how badly the PS3 launch might go. I do not see Sony getting much traction against MS and N until they incorporate some sort of price drop to become competitive price-wise. Don't bring up the BluRay issue because Sony is FORCING this down PS3 customers' throats, unlike MS who is giving 360 users the CHOICE of whether they want HD-DVD.
Kazuya wrote:Now if they wanted to get some Internet buffoon like Major Nelson or Reggie to appeal to their hardcore fans, it certainly couldn't hurt. But I don't see it as vital to their long term success...
Interesting how you categorize Major Nelson and Reggie as "buffoons". Why, because Sony doesn't have one? With all the mis-steps and misinformation that Sony has propagated since E3, their biggest failing is their pricing, forcing BR down users throats making them less competitive, and they will not deliver enough units at launch to satisfy the hardcore user wanting a unit and I bet users pick up a 360 out of frustration. Not to mention that the rumors are pretty hot and heavy that the vast majority of launch units WILL BE the $600 ones and most retailers will be forcing bundles on the launch customers because of the short supply issues. You can poo poo this scenario all you like, but we will see what happens in the next few months and it will be the very first Playstation launch I have ever sat out of.....

I just hope there's enough negative buzz about the PS3 that I can score one at or near launch for at or near the sticker price.

I just realized I've been playing NHL 2k7 for 2 weeks with the rumble feature off, and didn't even realize it. I'm not going to miss the rumble feature one bit, I don't think, but that's just me.

Major Nelson is far from a buffoon -- he's a brilliant stroke of creative, forward-thinking PR by Microsoft.

As someone who works in the PR business, the greatest challenge facing that industry right now is how to connect with and influence the blogosphere and podosphere. It is the next frontier of public opinion, and most conventional PR practitioners don't have a clue how to use it or reach it.

Microsoft was way ahead of the curve by letting Larry Hryb pose as Major Nelson on his own blog and podcast just as both emerging technologies were starting to reach critical mass.

And like it or not, there are a lot of potential and existing customers who are reached and influenced by Major Nelson's blog and podcast. Any company that ignores blogs, forums, MySpace, YouTube and podcasts to take the public's temperature and receive feedback does it at its peril in the future.

Take care,
PK

They're not forcing anything down anyone's throat.

They're not holding a gun to your head to make you buy their console. There are other choices.

They no more forced CD-ROM or DVD-ROM either. If you didn't like those drives, you could have bought an N64 or a Dreamcast or whatever.

The forcing claim is as silly as someone claiming Microsoft is forcing the Dashboard or the Media Center Extender down their throats.

Sony has always put the latest storage medium on their consoles. People were free to accept it as part of those platforms or go with a competitor.

How the prices break down in Canada:

Xbox 360 Premium: $499
20Gb PS3: $549
60Gb PS3: $659

Personally, the point that stands out to me is not how much Sony is asking but rather that ALL of these systems are damn expensive.

As someone who makes up a good chunk of the gaming market (32 year old male), I really wouldn't fret over an extra $50 or $150 for a console. The big worry is making the jump from the xbox I own right now.

For example, when buying my $2499 Aquos, I didn't think that stepping down to the Toshiba set for $2199. Sure, it was tempting for a second, but I knew that extra bucks would make me happier in the end.

Now whether or not the PS3 can distinguish itself from the 360 performance-wise is a different story. However, even a small step up in graphics or game content storgage might easily justify spending what I'd spend on 2 games.

It's a shame the industry has become inaccessible for so many though. I hope the Wii converts a lot of people along the way.

Got an email about preorders being taken today at Gamestop and EB (in store only today). Even though I keep telling myself I don't want to spend the money right now, I still waver on whether I should put down the $100 deposit (which doesn't guarantee a system).

From the EBGames.com website:

"Limited PlayStation 3 Pre-Order

GameStop and EB Games will begin accepting limited pre-orders for the PlayStation 3 console on Tuesday, October 10, on a first come, first served basis. Due to extremely limited supply, we expect to deplete this allocation very quickly, most likely in minutes. We will not accept additional pre-orders at this time. To avoid an unnecessary trip we strongly recommend you call your local store to determine availability. A $100 reservation deposit is required, which can be funded with cash, credit or trade. As we cannot control production and shipping issues by the manufacturer, a reservation deposit does not guarantee receipt of a system available to purchase at launch. Reservations/Purchases are limited to 1 per household.

Our limited online pre-order program will be announced at a later date, after software and accessory availability dates are confirmed. Online product pricing and availability will vary and will be fulfilled independent of store reservations."

Do EB offer a 2-year extended warranty on game systems? I wouldn't buy a launch unit of any console anywhere that didn't offer an extended warranty that let me take the unit back to them for a replacement. Just look at how many of the launch 360s have broken down.

Something to think about: With the very limited release of the PS3 retailers are probably going to go crazy with the bundles. I would imagine you'd be hard-pressed to find a PS3 without a forced bundle.

Interesting...notice how this link for the PS3 email list has the word "sweepstakes" in it. I guess that sums it up pretty well.

Well my December 2000 PS2 has never failed to load. But my launch PS1 skipped a lot and stopped loading after about 4 or 5 years.

If the manufacturer's warranty is 1 year parts and labor, then a Gold or Platinum card will give you 2 years coverage for free. If it's just 1 year parts and 90 days labor, then the credit card will extend it to 1 year for both.

Supposedly, some handful of units distributed to developers and magazines have been solid, very quiet. Oh and the power supply is internal.

As for the preorder thing, new must have spread like wildfire because I left for work early this morning to swing by a Gamestop on the way.

At 7:30 AM, there were about 10 people camping out in front. Store opens at 10 AM.

I just noticed the first billboard advertisement for PS3 as I drove to work this morning. It really hadn't registered that the launch date is right around the corner. (It's also pretty amazing how completely uninterested I am, but I guess the current sports gaming landscape will do that.)
