First I'm not arguing anything, just stating some opinions. Second I'm not assuming anything, I actually think ABC is the worst run networks on the air. They continually make bad decessions,
I'm just tired of hearing the declining ratings argument thrown around. The ratings have not declined in the key deomgraphic market for advertisers, someone who works for ABC (not you, just generalizing here) should be aware of that and aware of the fact that this is far more important then anything else.
Now has Lost gone from 18 million to 13 million, you bet your ass. Lets examine why, Lost was a word of mouth hit. Lots of people caught on late or got the season 1 DVD. These people were compelled to watch the show because it was the "it" show.
Now thrown in a very hetic on air schedule in season 1, with weeks of re-runs followed by maybe a pair of new episodes. Then the decession to do the 6 episode arc followed by a very long layoff in season 2 and you start losing people.
Add the fact that many of the people who felt like they needed to watch Lost probably wouldn't have if not for the word of mouth. Its very clear that this kind of show isn't for many.
Lets not leave out the fact that ABC in their wisdom choose to break up the shoot schedule to save money and you have a lot of episodes where we don't see the whole cast together and they feel disconnected, which a lot of people hated.
After all that and of course that little show called American Idol and no lead in to speak of. You're still drawing 13 milliuon plus a show. Think a show like Friday Night Lights or Veronica Mars wouldn't kill for those ratings?
It seems you're saying the show may end earlier then expected due to the rising cost of the cast. I have no problem believing that, because I'm sure ABC wouldn't know something good if it bit them in the ass and certainly wouldn't pay these people.
My point is the ratings aren't anywhere near bad enough to cancel this show, regardless of the cost to produce. But as you said Network execs don't always use logic in their choices and especially at the alphabet network.
Again please don't take this so personal. I am just talking about something i have interest in (not Lost but TV in general)
