Zeppo wrote:I think it's just as simple as the fact that he wants to keep being able to walk. Ben talked about it and I think he nailed it: Locke is afraid to be rescued, because he can now walk, thanks to the magic powers of the Island. A selfish act, to be sure. But it's not out of his character to do things he wants that he knows will or may have a big effect on other survivors, such as first insisting on inputting the number, then insisting on not inputting the number, blowing up the communications station, and so on.
Unfortunately, I think you're right, but I keep hoping that he has some underlying "good" reasons for what he is doing. Like Ben was alluding to, Locke seems to have figured out quite a bit of the island and it's mysteries and may just be helping everyone with his actions.
It's one thing if he wants to stay but why would he make it that much more difficult for others to leave?
Didn't he know Jack was about to board that sub?
That back story might depict why he might want to be isolated on an island which he believes has made him whole again. But it also illustrates that he confronted the con man when he thought the boy was killed by him. Locke isn't going to screw over others.
He'd have to have some kind of authoritarian/cult leader impulses to force the other survivors to the same fate he's chosen for himself.
If Jack gets out and comes back, that means the story and the series is pretty much over.
Well, to their credit I would say that Locke hasn't been one to think things through very well. He generally has acted on instinct in most cases, and his arguments with Jack in the past about 'faith' vs. 'reason' would indicate that he is prepared to go with his gut no matter the consequences. I'm not sure he's trying to hurt the other survivors as much as he feels that it's the right thing to do.
Also, I don't accept that the sub is the only way off the island. Walt and his father are, we have been led to believe, on their way home, and there is at least one other boat. I think all they said was that the sub was the only way back to the island. Of course, Ben was saying about how the sub was key to his control, since without it there at least as a symbol of the ability to return, the rest of the Others would rebel.
But hey, this show has been nothing if not wildly inconsistent in its logic, so, there you go.
Yeah, that was a pretty cool episode. Kind of felt like a "Tales from the Darkside" kind of ending or something though, but it was cool. I guess if they waited another hour to bury them they'd both be alive.

totally!
i think there was an EP like that about the 9 lives of cats and joey panatalones.
Yes, it definitely had a Tales from the Crypt/Darkside vibe and with so many self-referential flashbacks it seemed like Back to the Future.
The way that the majority of the dialog went to dead characters was amusing to a point but almost to the point of distraction. It was full of tongue in cheek references (Nikki: "we know what happens to guest actresses"; Sawyer: "Who ARE you?") but to the point where it was a bit of self-parody and and 'out-of-character'. It's ok though, as it comes a week after some of the show's big reveals and acts as a lighter, breather episode.
Actually a better movie (and play) parallel might be Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, a much funnier take on the plight of background characters (to Hamlet) that is tangential to the main storyline.
I just didn't enjoy last nights episode with the exception fo seeing Maggie Grace again. It was nice how they worked them into the old scenes etc, but it became so much I found it distracting.
Anyway next week looks good. But according to the Lost podcast we won;t be seeing Locke and his daddy for another 4 weeks.

This show has gone sooo far off the tracks, I just keeping asking my wife if we can finally take it off the tivo list....
The writers seem like they're stuck in a corner, and the longer they waste time, the better (the "let's get the van started" episode anyone?).
Anyway, there's alot talk here about next season being the absolute last season. So I hope they cut with the goof-ass flashbacks from characters no one knows, and get to the point.
It had a Twilight Zone kind of ending. Nikki wakes up just as she's being buried alive.
But the episode was the definition of filler, a throwaway episode about throwaway characters.
It's not like there weren't more interesting things going on, like how Jack and the others survivors at The Others' camp and their reactions to Locke screwing them over.

Agreed, the last thing this show needs is more episodes about dudes no one cares about.
I enjoyed the last episode, and the Hugo episode for that matter. I don't understand this villagers-wielding-torches attitude about demanding PLOT ADVANCEMENT every week. It's a freaking TV show. I have no problem letting the writers meander a bit now and then as long as they are interesting stories. If they want to make up some tailey from whole cloth and tell a backstory, I don't care...as long as the story is interesting.

I guess it depends on how much u like getting yanked around. The fact is most people don't like the meandering (check the ratings this season). I want it to move along because there's a 90%(or better) that next year is the last year. So if u like them pushing the scooby doo van around all day, more power to you.

On the opposite side of the spectrum is the show Rome on HBO. This season was the 2nd and final season of the show and they ended up speeding through the rest of the story to tell it all. It felt rushed and the show would have been even better had they taken more time telling the story. It would be a shame if Lost ended after next season. The pacing is fine with me too, plus I'd love to more of that Nicki chick. That dude can stay buried for all I care.
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

Where are you hearing that next season will be the last? All I have ever heard is that it was a 6 season plan. I don't think the ratings are that bad are they?
I work for ABC. There's plenty of talk about the actors ready to 'go on to better things' (aka get paid $$$ for movies etc...). Working on 'other' projects is a big pain in their asses right now because it's shot in Hawaii. The fact that the ratings are sliding kind of kills ABC throwing a ton of $$$ at them.
Of course, it could always go on forever, but that means Jack, Kate, and Sawyer will be "killed off" at the end of next season(aka released from their contracts). Are u ready for the 'Hurely' and 'Locke' era? yikes....
Well, the return of the smog monster last night. Quick question, any reason old smoggy couldn't just fly up and over the gate?? Thought that was weird.
Also, i was confused about the Juliette/Kate thing. Juliette said she too was left behind and gassed right? Yet she had the where-with-all to grab a set of handcuffs before she collapsed and what, woke up before Kate and handcuffed herself to her to give the impression they were "in it together"? All seems a bit fishy to me.
And lastly, anyone else watch that scene when Kate and Juliette were rolling around in the mud and wish they were in bikinis, or better yet naked. Just wondering.

When that one happened, I turned to my wife, and in the voice of Kramer from the Raquel Welsch episode, said: "c-c-c-cat fight"

- there are enough characters to keep it going. they should just call up julianna marguilles, anthony edwards, that other guy and noagh wylie and ask about leaving a good show to do "other projects".
-yeah. that is SO FISHY.
-and i pretty much spend the entire night trying to look down their shirts.

When you say 'that other guy,' do you mean that George Clooney guy?
Can you explain how a show like Alias lasted 5 or 6 season barely drawing 6 million viewers and Lost is going to get canceled after 3 seasons drawing over 13 million a week? Or the fact that is continues to draw in the important advertising demographic each week?
