OK, I know it's been asked before, but these threads continue to intimidate.
I'm picking this game up today either way, but I am a bit concerned about the depth being over my head. If anyone has a chance to play early, please post as to whether non-gearheads have a shot at enjoying this one.

I wouldn't be too concerned. I think Microsoft wants this game to be a univeral hit a la Gran Turismo. They have to be smart enough to know that hardcore racers will not make it that hit. I like what I've heard so far about the assists--there are enough of them that you can start with all of them and then whittle away at them as you learn how to drive better.
Not sure how everyone else feels about this, but I hope they allow assists for online races to be determined by each user, not set by the host. My experience has shown that I am faster without the assists on (which is how it should be). The only concern with assists would be standing starts if people have traction control...that'd be unfair.
