Forgive me for posting impressions based only on the demos of PES and FIFA....

Once again, I find myself liking aspects of both games, but not being able to completely embrace either. There's no arguing that FIFA's sophisticated gameplay is the work of good developers trying to perfect their title. However, in the end, I don't find a ton of fun in it. As mentioned on the FIFA board by Jrod I believe, the CPU defenders are always in the right spot, and as a result, the game flow can feel a bit constrained. I'm all for patient build up play, but there needs to be a balance.

With regards to PES, I've had moments that truly captured what I love about this franchise - precise controls, unpredictability, etc....There's no doubt that offense is the focus here. However, I wondered what the long term Masters League appeal will be when during my last game, AC Milan scored on 4 shots that were taken well outside the box, and didn't look particularly dangerous either. The keepers are just terrible from what I've seen so far, and while I'm sure there will be a bunch of dramatic, classic PES moments ahead, I still want to feel like scoring (for the CPU or myself) is something a bit special.

Maybe I'm jaded and should just enjoy what are two good games, but for some reason I just don't find myself being able to accept either game's faults.

Operation Sports has a thread for option files. Found it there. It is good overall, but is missing a few fairly key transfers. There is a new one now (linked to in the thread at OS) that supposedly addresses the deficiencies of the first.

Bingo. PES plays too fast and lacks the quality ball physics of FIFA, but it just seems more fun to play than FIFA for some reason I'm finding hard to pinpoint.

As Toon said, the difference between good and bad teams and the playing styles of teams is more pronounced -- and accurate -- in this version of PES than in any other. And definitely more pronounced than FIFA.

I played as Atletico Madrid in the Champions League in PES last night, and it was a bear to penetrate the Inter Milan defense. Meanwhile, I cut FC Copenhagen to shreds. Meanwhile in FIFA, there doesn't seem to be much difference between a league side in the FA Cup and playing Manchester United. The similar skills of all teams has been a persistent problem in FIFA, and I don't think it's fixed for this year, either.

Playing PC version for both. I'm going to give both games more time before deciding.

Late to the party here, but I'm VERY impressed with the wide variety of defensive and offensive styles CPU teams use in PES 2012. Every game is a challenge, most teams feel different. It's a significant advantage for PES over FIFA this year.

I can penetrate some teams' areas with ease; others are armor-plated. Some CPU teams use the long ball, while others use a slower build-up.

My only quibble is an attempt by most CPU teams early in the game to use a long ball or slicing through pass up the middle for a breakaway. Seems to be almost a CPU cheat, but it can be stopped with expectation and preparation.

Highly recommend Jenkey's gameplay tool if you're playing the PC version of PES 2012:

OR

http://www.evo-web.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=65411

This balances the CPU-human play very nicely. Also sharpens graphics, changes weight of ball and speed of passing. Creates a better competitive balance and makes a fine game even better.

Many variables can be adjusted with this tool. But I'm digging Jenkey's default settings.

I'm having immense fun with the PC version of PES 2012, modded with Jenkey's gameplay mod and the PES 2012 patch.

The patch adds all correct team names, player names, league names, logos, sponsors on shirts, adds extra stadiums, adds Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2, etc. Jenkey's gameplay mod adds to the realism, corrects some basic AI flaws and adds stadiums. Both very easy to install and compliment each other well.

Fantastic gameplay, with a wide variety of outcomes, offensive attacks and goals, and realistic stats, too. Only changes I'm making to the game are using Game Speed -1 and removing one notch from fully assisted passing. I may reduce the passing by one more notch to even the possession percentage a bit. I'm still able to hold the ball a bit too much.

My modded version of PES 2012 has nearly 50 different stadiums. Very cool.

Really enjoying this. Much more than FIFA 12, which surprises me.

I got FIFA 12 but tired of it quick. I rather keep my WC10 game, it was just more fun to play than FIFA was.

But I would really like to pickup this game as it seems it's more suited for my tastes. From the video's I've seen it seems to play faster than FIFA which is more up my alley.

Only problem is I can't find this game on sale anywhere. Also, I read it's a big pain in the neck to download the rosters/teams/kits on XB360 than the easy file transfer on PS3.

Anyone know when this game is going to go on sale?

I just picked this up for XB but having trouble finding a site to download the real teams, uniforms, etc.....

The OS thread confuses me.

Can someone just post a website where I can download all the real teams , kits, etc.... for the game?

Unless something has changed, you can't modify the Xbox version. Only the PS3 and the PC versions. I haven't played this years version so I can't say for sure, but that's the way it was a year or so back.

Another Update released today, updates Copa Liberatores for 2012 and said

" Similarly, selected parts of the game have been refined for a more fluid in-game experience."

But i aint seeing much on that front.

Jimmy.

Any change to the shooting? I've not been able to see a list of the "gameplay refinements" that Konami says they made.

I dont think so, but ive played like 5 games since the update and had about 3 shots  seriously, the defense is outstanding, they play like Chelsea against Barca.

I'm very late to the party as well as I just picked up the game a few days ago, but I'm enjoying this quite a bit on PS3. It was a bit of a pain having to download and copy an option file, but I was up and running within an hour or so.

I play co-op with my kids and was getting really bored with FIFA. We have been playing a mock Euro tournament (not the DLC) and it has been pretty boring. All the teams play exactly the same and the goals scored were very similar. I've already seen more variety all around in PES. It's a lot of fun. The real test will be seeing if my boys can grasp the somewhat touchy (but ultimately more rewarding IMO) shooting.

Shooting? You mean that thing that happens when the ball floats towards the goal like a child's bubble being blown by the breeze? ;)

I had a few of those during my first few games, but after a little bit of practice and reading some tips online I've really improved. There probably is a happy medium though between FIFA where it's easy to shoot and there isn't much difference in player abilities and PES where it's difficult and it seems too scripted based on ratings.

There can't be much better 3 or 4 player co-op with kids sports video games than soccer. We had a blast night night and I feel that they are learning a lot about spacing, strategy, etc.

Been playing this for about a month. Surprised myself by getting it to run pretty well on my low-specs laptop and even more surprised by how much I like it. Initially, I was put off by the difficulty in defending lofted through balls by the CPU but finally got the hang of it. Unprecedented off-the-ball team mate movement makes for some sublime passing moves. Great game!
