I am now in GPL Ranks under John Voncannon.

Watkins Glen does look a lot more lush now with the add-ons.

I believe it would be. Boys, not sure if I can get in tonight. Really bushed, and I need to get some sleep.

Maybe, maybe not. But definitely over the weekend!

I can see the server and it lets me in, GPL starts, then I get "Timed out Opening Communications Channel" and it takes me back to IGOR. I am a dumbass. Considering how many times I have configured this damn game you would think I would know what I am doing. Nope... I also get "Client/Server Bandwidth Mismatch".

Holy Crap Steve Life's Kyalami track is gorgeous. Not sure how real it is but it is pretty.

I had to use IE to go to his site. Opera couldn't see the links he has at the side of this page for download.

Yep. One of the main reasons why I'm sticking with Steve's tracks for now despite my reservations about their realism, at least the backgrounds.

Plus it's just so damn easy to get Steve's tracks. Everything usually is in one executable file combining the best upgrades by other artists and Steve's touches. You don't need to grab this guy's signs, that guy's skies, this guy's track textures and that guy's trees.

One-stop shopping. Very nice and tidy.

Some day I'll go for the full historic accuracy, knowing I can easily return to Steve's tracks if I want. In fact, I'm going to burn a disc with all of Steve's tracks just in case his site goes down or closes for some reason.

P.S.: Even though the Glen is updated for the demo, Steve's little touches for the Glen are well worth the download.

Take care,
PK

Reading portions of this thread reminds me why I never got on with GPL much. I had so many errors and failed attempts to race online. I think I've only ever been able to successfully run online 2 or 3 times.

I don't even know where to get all the stuff required anymore, it's just too overwhelming to try to hop into after so many years.

Terry:

Hmm. It took me one change -- I was an idiot for overlooking it -- to IGOR to get going online. Maybe I was lucky.

Plus Steve Life's tracks are one-stop shopping, as I've said.

Wish you would join us.

Terry, I don't know why I am having so many problems. I am sure I am being an idiot as I have had this stuff running fine before on multiple occassions. Another online option for GPL as opposed to the IGOR client is

WinVROC: http://legacy.vroc.net/

This was the first online GPL tool and there are many who still use it for the 1967 cars online. IGOR is the best option if you are running the 65, 69, or Thundercars mods. I never had any issues with running servers using WinVROC or connecting to other servers.

James:

I'm out. I have an indoor soccer game at 10:30 p.m. Sorry.

I'll look on IGOR when I get home, which probably will be close to midnight. If you cats are gone, hopefully we can race again soon!

GRAND PRIX LEGENDS QUICK INSTALL GUIDE

1) Install the GPL 2004 Demo:

http://www.bhmotorsports.com/GPL/downloads/3239

This gives you all the updated patches, and GPLEA 1967 carset, new sounds, etc. It also includes an updated Watkins Glen. To get the other 10 original tracks just copy them off your GPL CD to the tracks folder. Now you have just elimintated the complete re-install, multiple patching, and downloading and installing of all the individual car and sound updates.

2) Install the Legends of 67 Demo Fix:

http://fp.gplegends.plus.com/Lo67Demofix.htm

Provides improved menu graphics for Honda and Cooper. Corrects the drivers - adding Jackie Stewart, Mike Spence, Bob Anderson, and Guy Ligier, replacing Jean-Pierre Beltoise, Richie Ginther, Mike Parkes, and Jackie Ickx.

3) Install lastest version of GEM+ and IGOR:
http://gem.ebi-service.de/

4) Install one or more of the following mods:

- 1965 Mod Version 2.0.1
http://fp.gplegends.plus.com/65modv2.htm

- 1969 Mod Part 2
http://1969gpl.speedgeezers.com/

- Thundercars Part 2

Add new tracks from the GPL Alternative Track Database:
http://gpltd.bcsims.com/

My current Top 10 (always changing):

Brands Hatch 1967
Watkins Glen 1948 (v2.0)
Monza 10k
Isle of Man (Abridged) Mountain Course
Clermont-Ferrand 1965
Lime Rock Park 2002
Solitude
Bridgehampton Long Island Grand Prix
Indy 1967
Laguna Seca Historic 1995

Don, I think that to just RUN with us at Watkins Glen for now.. all people need is the GPL 2004 Demo, and GEM+/Igor. Right? Anything else?

Just want to get Terry to bite with only 2 downloads.

Track updates.. mods etc. can come later (like maybe a new track or two each week) Don't want to scare people off thinking they have to do alot just to race Watkins Glen.

Am I reading this incorrectly, or do I need to have a demo instead of the original CD I got when the game came out? Is this a separate, "enhanced" version of GPL or something? So that demo just uses the tracks but not much else? I'm not quite sure how to read that, sorry. I feel totally ignorant suddenly.

*edit and thanks so much Don...I don't care about the number of downloads, but a nice, easy-to-follow guide like that is perfect. I just can't make sense if this is AFTER I install GPL from the CD, or INSTEAD of GPL.

Terry:

All you need is the demo and GEM-IGOR to race online with us at Watkins Glen. You don't need the original GPL at all.

The demo is a complete, enhanced version of the original GPL with one track, Watkins Glen.

If you want to run other tracks, then you need to load the original GPL from your disc and drag those tracks over to the tracks folder in the 2004 demo. Then you can update those original tracks copied to the tracks folder of the 2004 demo with updated graphics to match the beauty of the Glen in the 2004 demo.

But bottom line, you only need the 2004 demo and GEM-IGOR to race online with us at the Glen. Nothing else.

Take care,

Sorry Terry, yeah I should have made that clearer. Certainly you can install GPL from your CD. However, then you will need to download and install all the patches (official and unofficial) that came out for GPL in the last several years. Then you will also need to manually download and install all the updated GPLEA 1967 cars, sounds, etc. The GPL 2004 Demo basically just does all that for you. Now there is another option (I was shooting for the fastest and easiest with the demo method).

1) Install GPL from the CD.

2) Install the GPL All-In-One Patch that incorporates a multitude of the original GPL patches (official and unofficial).

http://gplmz.bcsims.com/index.php?showtopic=2621

3) You will still need to update the GPLEA cars manually if you want the latest and greatest graphic updates to the 1967 cars.

http://www.kotr.de/GPL/

4) Install GEM+/IGOR

PS - And Jamie and Paul are correct, to get racing with us at Watkins Glen it is basically a 2 step process. I was adding in the bonus stuff.

Guys, I might race with the ADV average tonight at 9 EST at Zandvort if I don't play soccer (it's frigid here today so I probably wont).

Then I promised my newphew we would play Rainbow 6 Vegas at 11 EST.

12 EST looks great for me if we want to jump on.

James, the password for ADC is "goadc" Register and join up for their race at 9 EST. I will follow at the back of the pack but it is fun nonetheless.

12 is probably too late for me, but if I'm up I'll join in. I can't do 9pm tonight though. Maybe another time.

I wish, I wish, I wish I had a connection good enough to get involved in this. I spent a couple of hours tonight quickly going round the tracks I didn't have any kind of time on just to gain a complete GPL Rank score, though even at relatively low pelt I still bent my suspension against a fence near the end of my Nordschleife run. Gah.

I've added everyone I could find here to my GPL Rank buddies list - if anyone wants me then searching for Adam Simpson brings me up. Drive it like you stole it, you swines.

I've been trying for 2 hours to get the GPL 2004 download to actually work. I wait in line for 10 mins each time, then it just gives "page could not be displayed" for both Gamershell and 3Dgamers. Ridiculous.

Finally got it and got the mods (I thought). IGOR or whatever it is gives me a "cannot load gplmods.ini" when launching, and that ADC I saw mentioned showed mods that I didn't have installed. I'll stick a fork in it for now, this is hilarious. I never was that good at it anyway, could barely keep the car on the track

Did you run GEM+ and enable the mods that you installed?

Did GPL work on it's own, without running GEM/IGOR?

I think you are really close.

From the RSC forums:
I had the same behaviour at first with it not finding the mods (error said it could not find gplmod.ini), plus said it couldn't find player/player folder. I got it to work without reinstalling anything.

In IGOR options try typing in the path to GPL manually, rather than browsing to the GPL.exe. Try with and without the trailing \. I'm not sure exactly how it was fixed on my system because I tried many different things to set the gplpath, but I do believe the problem is to do with IGOR finding the gpl folder.

IGOR now works (including joining 69mod races) and the gplpath in both the igor.ini and igor options is "C:\SIERRA\gpl" (I believe when you browse to it is leaves off the last "" ).
