I'm watching this from afar, but I question the legs of this device.

My plan is to get an Archos Gamepad when available in USA. Android, similar processing power, and built-in gaming controls so I can play it mobile on the 7-inch screen or go big screen via HDMI-out. In theory, at least.

Naples:

As if harbouring some wish to run your Archos hopes aground on a rocky shore of disappointment, I offer Eurogamer's take on said device, published today:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/df-ha ... pad-review

The nicest comment in the entire article is "fails on every conceivable level".

Lol archos. I made a pact a long time ago to never buy one of their tablet devices. Eurogamer has it about right.

Haha, sweet. I was fully prepared to buy a 'budget' device with several compromises, though obviously there's a line for minimum quality.

Here is something similar, coming from Nvidia:

"Nvidia clearly hopes that Shield's features will set it apart from the others. It runs Android (the latest version, 4.2 a.k.a. Jelly Bean), and of course you can play the latest and greatest games and shows on the device. But there's more to it than that. It pairs up with your computer, allowing you to play games that would normally only appear on your PC's monitor.

This capability was demonstrated on stage, with the Shield device streaming "Assassin's Creed III" and "Need For Speed: Most Wanted" to the device. The player can use the built-in 720p screen or have an even higher-definition image appear on a TV by connecting an HDMI cable.

No pricing or launch date was announced (some time in mid-2013 is estimated), but it's clear from its specs that the device won't be cheap."

Yep, saw that just before going to bed last night. Seems promising, basically an xbox controller with a flip up 5" screen, though it's hard to say too much without price and release date.

Looks great but will be way out of my price range....could get a good gaming laptop for the price of it I imagine.

Fantastic news as I've read some bad things about the pack in controller. Tho I guess they have recently redesigned it according to their facebook page.

Mine should be here in the next few weeks.

I can't wait to try many of the games and my boys will love the crane game.

A few suggestions:

Dubwars
Natural Soccer

Can you try those out Macca?

Good write up. It defintely is not a Ps3/360 but I m still excited.

Nice review, Macca.

That said, I can't imagine there ever being a gaming device that holds less interest for me than this thing.

Worth it as a media streamer for my kids though, maybe?

Pigpen,

Dubwars
- this is basically Geometry Wars with a dub-step soundtrack
- left stick moves, right stick aims/orients your ship BUT you only shoot in time with the music
- so far it's just a one level demo, full game comes out July

Natural Soccer
- a Kick Off 2 (top-down 16-bit soccer game on Amiga and Atari ST) rip-off but control is crap - there is a lag between movement which doesn't work for a super-quick game like Kick Off

I really like that crane game. I didn't talk too much about it in the review but thing is awesome as an emulation machine - I've spent more time just playing Super Mario World than any of the Ouya games. Also, like I hinted in the review (but didn't want to expand since it's a bit sketchy) you can load non-Ouya marketplace games. Grand Theft Auto III works great - not only looks like the PS2 version but controls the same with the pad. Max Payne also works well. Unfortunately I couldn't get any of the EA Sports games to work, nor Real Racing 3 (which would be awesome).

Rob,
As a $99 media streamer I think it's a decent buy - that's probably what this will ultimately end up being for me. XBMC is a fantastic piece of software - not just for Netflix or streaming media from your PC, you can also load channels for content from different sites (i.e. Giant Bomb).

My Ouya finally arrived...had no idea it would show up because I never got any shipping info whatsoever, in fact I can't even find the receipt for the thing. Maybe I got it for free? :)

Ironically, mine arrived today as well with no notification.

I even sent in an email to Ouya early this morning asking about my order.

The boys and I toyed around with it this evening and we had a blast with it.

They loved the crane game and flip rider.

After using it for a weekend, the thing is on eBay. What a piece of junk. Poor hardware, wifi dropouts, controller lag, poor support for "other controllers" by devs and just an overall beta feel. Anyone want mine? LOL.

I guess I've been fortunate - no issues with wifi dropout or controller lag. I'm actually still enjoying it a lot as a emulation machine - my daughter has been fiddling around with the ton of SNES games I put on there.

He's pretty much right. Emulation is really the only thing going for it, and I can do that just fine on my phone.

Why was this not obvious to everyone from the moment the Ouya was mentioned? I mean, it looked like a crappy idea from the get go. They just used Kickstarter to screw folks out of $100 instead of As Seen On TV advertising.

Well the idea of a cheap streaming box that can play old school games isn't a bad idea per se. The execution was just poor and it seems like developers didn't embrace it the way they thought. At least early in the life span.

But hey...at least I got 95 for it on eBay. LOL. Suckers born every day.

And that is exactly why I was against MS's DRM policy and only allowing you to sell your games back to "authorized retailers". It completely eliminated the sucker pool on ebay where I sell 80 percent or more of my games.

I have been very happy with my Ouya so far.

Most of my minimal gaming time is spent with my 5 and 7 year old and they are loving Amazing Frog, No Brakes Valet and the emulators.

My 7 year old thinks Starfox 64 is amazing and running through Mario Kart 64 is as fun today as it was 15 years ago.

I am glad I can play these on my TV as I HATE playing games on my phone. The controls always ruin it for me.

I have had zero controller lag and everything has been very smooth
