That's funny Dave. Yesterday my dad and I were watching the Braves/Phillies game and they kept cutting to the Yankee game to show what A-Rod did. 95% of the bullsh*t that happens with A-Rod is a product of the media and them trying to make stories out of nothing. If the media didn't cut to every A-Rod strikeout and error, do you really think Yankee fan would be so motivated to boo the guy? I sure don't. By the media sticking this guy under a microscope, even the most loyal and die hard fans start overthinking the guys value. The guy will hit .280+, hit 30+ hrs and have 100+ rbis. Sure, that may not be in line with the value of his contract, but come on. It's not like he's been an average major leaguer. He's still top 5 offensively without a doubt. Oh yeah...and I hate A-Rod...but he's a damn fine ballplayer.

Plus the fact that Yankee fans are so blinded by their adoration of Jeter they can't see what a woman he's being toward A-Rod in their so-called "feud", or "not a feud", whatever those two ladies are calling it this week.
A-Rod doesn't stand a chance to catch any kind of break from the fans in that environment.

With my Giants starting their season this afternoon, and me being stuck at work, I decided to give the 5 day MLB Premium online a try. No go. Turns out I am blocked because my zip code is considered to be a part of the Padres Broadcast area.
Here is the kicker, I live in Arizona...70+ miles southeast of Tucson. I couldn't pick this game up over the air of it were being broadcast from Tucson, let alone San Diego. Go figure.

It's called Sierra Vista. Your assumptions aren't too far from accurate.dbdynsty25 wrote:Wow...didn't know anything with running electricity and plumbing existed south of Tucson.drbaseball wrote:Here is the kicker, I live in Arizona...70+ miles southeast of Tucson. Man, do the Giants look pathetic.
When an aging Rich Aurilia is your starting first baseman and batting in the 5 hole you know it is going to be a long season.
Zito is a nice pitcher...he will keep the Giants around a ballgame most of the time...but for 126 million, I want electric stuff. I couldn't be happier that the Giants wasted 126 million on him and mark my words....it will be a waste.
Durham batting in the 4 hole....I can't see Bonds seeing a lot of pitches this year.
The only way the Giants stay above .500 is if Cain and Lowry have a huge year because Morris and Ortiz are walk happy, coupled with Zito...way to many free passes.
I think it's time to bring back the mid 80's Giants slogan..."Go Giants, hang in there".
LOL, as a Dodger fan, I love it!

Yeah, I would definitely hate to have a guy who hit 23 homers and drove in 70 runs while hitting .300 in only 122 games. That's better than any 1b they've throw out there in years.pigpen81 wrote:When an aging Rich Aurilia is your starting first baseman and batting in the 5 hole you know it is going to be a long season.

The Giants probably don't even care. I think the upper management there knows as long as Bonds sticks around, the team isn't going to go anywhere. They signed Zito as the anti-Bonds since he got some good pub in Oakland and they hope for him to be the face of their team for the next 5 years.

It's one game. The Giants aren't any worse than they were last year, when they managed to hang around the horrible NL West race until September. Aurillia and Durham are coming off strong seasons. Db already gave Aurillia's stats; Durham had a .898 OPS.
SF is like a lot of teams in the NL. If they stay healthy and get some pitching, they'll win 88 games and be in contention. On the other hand, their potential downside is pretty low, but not Washington Nationals low or 1985 "Hang in There" Giants low.
I know they had the worst record in the history of SF Giants baseball but I have fond memories of that 85 team http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/SFG/1985.shtml

Plus did you see Durham make that diving grab? He still plays like a 25 yo out there for Chri$t's sake so I wouldn't be worried about his age at this point. Just look at Franco!sfz_T-car wrote:It's one game. The Giants aren't any worse than they were last year, when they managed to hang around the horrible NL West race until September. As Padres fan and subsequent Giants/Dodgers hater it's been a pretty sweet opening week for me so far. Peavy rocked Zito's world today and the Dodgers looked crap against Sheets (OK it is Sheets) and only kinda crap against Capuano. Bonds did pick up a stolen base today though which worries me a bit as the last thing the pads need is a healthy BB.

All that s***. Yeah, you got your facts straight. Let me guess, you saw a clip of the interview on ESPN? Thats what I thought. Great win for the Braves in game #2 of the season. Thats about it.dbdynsty25 wrote:The Phillies have a good bullpen. Jimmy Rollins probably shoulda looked at that before he talked all that sh*t. Sure, only two games, but they have been less than impressive thusfar. The Braves know all about it...after last years bullpen disaster.

Nope...read an interview in the Philly paper about how only the Mets and Phillies have a chance at the division. I try to stay away from ESPN...unless it is to read the local stories from my favorite teams and their respective newspapers. But that's a nice try.Diablo25 wrote:All that s***. I love how its talking s*** when a player thinks his team should be considered a contender in the division. Especially from a guy (Rollins) who is well respected and never runs his mouth. If you actually did read a Philly paper and the ENTIRE interview then you would know Rollins gave props to all the legit teams in the division in that interview...including the Braves. You are entertaining DB, I'll give you that. Now respond to this in record time (as usual) with more myths. Have a nice evening.dbdynsty25 wrote:Nope...read an interview in the Philly paper about how only the Mets and Phillies have a chance at the division. In all seriousness, it was a nice win for the Braves.

I know it's only one game, but I wonder if Zito will end up like those ex-A's pitchers who've left and not done so well. Maybe it was easy to win in Oakland since nobody reallys cares about that franchise.
I think back of those early decade A's teams with Mulder, Zito, Hudson and how they blew those 2-0 first round playoff leads. the problem with those teams, and still the A's imo today, is that they're still too much of a party atompshere in the clubhouse. Especially those Zito/Mulder/Hudson teams, that clubhouse was like a frat house. If those guys weren't partying all night during the playoffs, maybe they could have got to a WS.
IMO, Barry Zito is basically another Andy Pettite. That's not a bad thing when Pettite was on his game, but he's def. not worth 126m.

Responding in record time...you're competing for that title right now bro. As for Rollins...I love the guy. I think he's the best all around ballplayer on the Phils and I've loved him since he first got called up. However, I didn't agree with how he went about speaking about the teams in the division. Everyone on the Braves was ticked about it and I'm sorry if I like to side with my team. Rollins can speak as often as he likes...it's just motivation for the rest of the teams...that doesn't mean he's a bad ballplayer...I still like the guy on the field...it's off it that I lost a little respect for him.
Zito will be fine. You don't have a career like his on accident.Inuyasha wrote:I know it's only one game, but I wonder if Zito will end up like those ex-A's pitchers who've left and not done so well. Maybe it was easy to win in Oakland since nobody reallys cares about that franchise.

Kinda like Rollins did when asked of his team's chances this year? I'm so sick of that interview being misquoted or taken out of context.I'm sorry if I like to side with my team.
Seriously, Rollins did not say a thing improper in the interview you are referring to. I respect the fact that you defend your team...I do the same but quit fanning the flames of the bullwinkle media with your false statements.
Utley is the Phils best all around player by far and yes I have the red ass after my team coughed up that win. I'm not worried about the Phils, its the media in Philly that will start "the sky is falling" talk at sunrise tomorrow...and half of the ignorant Phillies fan base will jump on it like the clowns they are.

I'm just speaking about my last three posts in which you have broken land speed records.Diablo25 wrote:I sure am in the same compulsive obsessive ballpark as you as far as quick response postingWow. Again, entertaining.
And as far as fanning flames...there are no flames. I was just reiterating what I read and the reaction from the Braves players. Not quite sure why you are so offended by that. Obviously Rollins ticked some people off...was it just their imagination that he said stuff? I don't quite get it. I do get the red ass from ya though...I watched the Braves blow 29 saves last year. If they only blew half of those, they are battling the Mets for the division crown. Just hope it doesn't become a recurring theme.
Didn't the media destroy the Phillies after the first loss? I can't imagine how bad it will be tomorrow.

The biggest problem with Zito's contract isn't the dollars, it's the length. Seven years is too long for a pitcher. Given the current rate of escalation, his 2013 salary probably won't be among the top 20 in the league.Diablo25 wrote:Zito will be fine. He's made 220 starts in the past seven years. If he can equal that, it won't be a bad deal. But that would be extraordinary durability for a pitcher into his mid 30s.
As for the Oaklands' playoff record, there's no telling what's going to happen in a seven or especially five game series. Their consistency in getting there is impressive even to this A's hater (more like ignorer) from the other side of the bay.

B. Zito is only 28, he's proven to be durable and it's reliable. With the way salary is excalating in the MLB, who knows by 2013 if he's injury free, it may be great deal for SF. His deal also includes an $18 million option for 2014 with a $7 million buyout that could increase the value of his deal to $137 million. The option would become guaranteed if Zito pitches 200 innings in 2013, 400 combined over 2012 and 2013 or 600 combined from 2011-13. He also has a full no-trade clause. Yeah, I guess he likes it at the Bay.
