Don:

The rFactor Web site said a minimum of 64 MB of video RAM is needed. I only have 32 MB of VRAM in my laptop.

Are the minimum specs a bit fat?

Thanks,
PK

I've only got GPL but I'd be willing to pick up GTR2, rFactor, or one of the rally games if a regular race night develops.

Ah, yeah probably pushing it with 32mb. Since you are able to run F1 Challenge, I was thinking that it might work since rFactor is built off of a similar engine. I was just about to say that I've got a 64mb card laying around, but guess that won't help much in a laptop.

If PK ends up getting a desktop PC with a free PCI Express slot I've got a Geforce 6600 w/256MB RAM I'd donate. It's just been sitting in the closet since I upgraded to a 7600GT.

Oh, and if the racing night develops I'm all set. I broke down and ordered a Logitech MOMO wheel tonight. :)

OK guys, let's get a GPL night going. Medium race at Watkins Glen with the 67's.

Replay Analyzer can do a bang up job of a race summary.....it is awesome.

Don, are you a whiz at this...if not, I'll try and figure it out.

I think I've still got a GPL server setup somewhere. I'll see what I can do tonight. I know I've got to open up ports on my router. Maybe we should go with the 65's or the 69's since they are a little easier for beginners. Who am I kidding though. I have been playing GPL since 1998 and I'll bet pk kicks my ass right off the bat. :)

I'll post the info as soon as I get the server up and running.

GTR
GTR2
GPL
GTL
F1 Challenge 99-02
Richard Burns Rally
Midnight Club 2
NFS Underground 2
Grand Prix 4
rFactor

I could actually donate one of my copies of GTR to PK, I sold off my second Momo so I don't really need 2 copies of it anymore, especially since GTR2 has come out. It might actually run decently on his laptop.

BTW...I ahve GPL, R-Factro, and GTR 2.

I haven't touched GTR 2 online. Only R-Factor and GPL.

Let us know Don, I'll try it out later when you get it going.

I'm for any of the years but 67's are my fav.

Don:

Of all the games I obtained, F1 Challenge is the only one that has framerate chugs and hits. I have to turn off a lot of the car detail and effects, keeping only medium track detail so I have some reference points for turns.

GPL 2004 runs fine, even with high-res tracks like those made by Steve Life.

Take care,

GP Legends vets:

What are some of your favorite track sets with which to update the original 11 tracks from GPL for the GPL 2004 demo? Monaco Rocks 2 seems to be the consensus choice for The Principality, but I've seen choices from all over the place on the other 10 tracks.

I downloaded Steve Life's tracks from his site at http://www.stevelife.com/news.htm , and they are damn pretty.

Any other top picks?

Boys, I can't contain my enthusiasm over this game right now. I'm not watching the BCS title game. I'm not even watching my beloved Oilers! Instead I'm finding track updates for GPL! :)

Thank God for the DVR and caffeine. :)

Thanks,
PK

Hey guys,

I just re-installed GPL and updated it with the GPL2004 Demo. One thing I've noticed is color banding in the sky. Is GPL only 16 bit color and I just never noticed the banding before or do I have a problem? I haven't found anything referencing color banding in GPL on google.

**EDIT**

Never mind. I just downloaded a couple of the updates Don recommended and the sky textures are fine with them. Thanks Don!

Dudes:

I know this might be heresy for some of you GPL vets, but did you know you can run the Indy oval in 1967 cars? I found a cat who has special oval setups, too, and would be more than willing to share the file. :)

For now, the only extra tracks I'm getting are the Indy oval, current Indy road course (my fantasy -- Jim Clark running on the IMS oval and road course in the same year) and maybe Brands Hatch.

I want to concentrate on the original 11 tracks before I go hog-wild with add-on tracks.

F*ck, this is FUN!

Take care,
PK

PK, I know you were down to a 1:20 at the Glen yesterday...any improvements?

I ran a 1:10.38 last night with a Ferrari.....then promptly slid off the track on turn 4.

I'm going to run with the Lotus tonight....much more stable when braking.

Piggy:

I'm so busy downloading upgrades for the "Original 11" track graphics that I've only turned a few laps tonight at Mexico to see that the new track graphics worked. Man, those Steve Life graphics are pretty.

I ran that 1:20 last night at the Glen in the Cooper, which is the slowest but most stable car in the game. I easily thought that I could have found five or six seconds last night if I stayed up later, as I'm still making a TON of mistakes. But what fun.

I'm using bone-stock setups, too.

Take care,
PK

Sweet, you have finally seen the light!

Updating the 11 original tracks became a sick, constantly changing obsession for me. I have spent a lot of time testing different updates. I prefer realism and authenticity for the 1967 season, so you may find some that are more graphically enhanced, but these give a good overall feel. Here are the current updates I am using for the 11 original tracks(always subject to change). If you can't find all these, I will be glad to just zip all my tracks up and send them to you.

Piggy:

Just turned four laps in the Cooper at the Glen for sh*ts and giggles after reading your post and ran a 1:15.70. I'm working at it ... :)

Back to track updates.

Don:

Many thanks!

Steve Life bases many of his tracks on those folks' excellent prior work and adds even more graphical touches. I'm starting with Steve's just because it's very easy to get all 11 tracks at one site, and they're beautiful.

But I may get your historical obsession sooner or later. :)

Damn Don, just wow!

Thanks for all that.

PK, 1:15 in the Cooper is a great run.....super stable car but not much there on the speed, great beginner car.

Next, try the Lotus...much more pick up and the stability is pretty good.

My all time best is a 1:08 something with it....I have to check GP Rank to get the actual time.

I'm jumping on soon.

Sadly, Monaco Rocks won't work on my machine. The sky is just filled with zig-zag textures, almost like an Iron Butterfly video. :) The track, cars and some buildings look fine. But the sky is f*cked.

Piggy:

I don't have GEM or IGOR installed yet, sorry. Plus I do want to watch the football game and get to bed at a decent hour.

Ever since I got the wheel from you Saturday, sleep has been minimal, and I'm dragging, man.

Soon, though! :) :) :)

I'd jump in but until my Logitech MOMO wheel shows up I'm running with an Xbox controller and I can't hold a line at all. 8O I don't know what excuse I'll use for not holding my line after the wheel shows up.

Even the 4bit version 2.1 with Extra Lite Add-on Version 2.1?

Don't forget to sign up for GPL Rank:

I know you are not a hotlapper, but getting yourself a GPL Rank is a really good way of getting to know the 11 original tracks. Here are my sad times after many years of starts and stops.

Kyalami - 1:24.445 (Ferrari)
Mexico - 1:55.553 (Eagle)
Monaco - 1:35.133 (Ferrari)
Monza - 1:30.170 (Eagle)
Mosport - 1:27.862 (Ferrari)
Nürburgring - 9:51.410 (Ferrari)
Rouen - 2:08.088 (Ferrari)
Silverstone - 1:35.249 (Eagle)

What is the server name?

PS - I am having a little trouble getting the server to show up outside my firewall. Server name is GPL-DSP, let me know if anyone can see it in IGOR.
