Glad I am not the only one who thought this, I had a list of 4 people based on their comments before getting the game who I knew would dislike it no matter what. One down, three to go.dbdynsty25 wrote:No one is really surprised. When you go into a game telling yourself you will not like it no matter what you see on the field...you won't like it. Most, if not all, of your comments this week have been critical of the game and what you have 'heard' through other boards and whatnot. I'm not criticizing you, per se, but it's hard for a game to please someone who really doesn't want the game to be good. There really isn't a way for me to state that, that doesn't sound like I'm attacking you...it's more of an observation than anything and it just doesn't seem like you care, or want to like the game. You were just waiting till you got your hands on it to completely rip it apart.
Obviously, I haven't played the game yet...so I'll leave my commentary till later (as you all wait with baited breath I'm sure)...I just don't get the feeling you really wanted to like the game Badgun.

Haven't played yet, but I'm sure excited to get in a game this evening. Badgun, if you're used to playing the 2K series, I have found you have to really force yourself to play a different game when it comes to the passing game in EA's. There are subtle enough differences to make it aggravating when switching over. I found that to be the case last year with 2K5 and Madden. I played tons of 2K5 and when I rented Madden, I couldn't pass for the life of me. It seriously took a few games at least to reassociate myself with the feel.
And going with what Abner said, he's 100% right. It's very easy to get set in your ways and always try to pass the ball dowfield (10-20 yards). If you take advantage of the underneath passes, I'm sure your passing percentage will go up. In addition, because of my reflexes seem to be taking a hit when playing football games, I generally look for two receivers when going back to pass. I always have a primary receiver in mind, and if he's not there I'm generally passing off to the half back or the TE.
Good luck. Hang in there. Worse comes to worse, play the game for the next few weeks and trade it in for Madden. I'm sure you'll get at least 30 dollars back in credit. A $20 hit, but at least you played it like an online rental.

The passing game appears to be broken, like last year? That's a bold statement.
I'm using the same team Badgun, FSU. I'm 3 games into my dynasty, on Heisman with AuburnAlumni's sliders, and Lee (the same 82 rated QB) is completing 57% of his passes.
As for online, I've played about 17 games (ranked and unranked). I've used FSU in 15 of those games, and Lee has only completed less than 50% of his passes in two games.

technically you're not late, the game was released today. Some of us just got it a week early.HouOilers wrote:
all joking aside, I was on vacation and got in late for this game. Do you guys all have it for xbox or ps2? What's better?
I have it for the Xbox, no slowdown this year. My PS2 is just a dust collector at this point with the exception of wraslin games

I haven't touched the sliders yet. Just played my second game and beat Air Force 28-7. I was 8-25 for 158 yards and I conciously tried to make good throws to guys I thought were open or would be open. Oddly enough, three of my 8 completions were ricochets and should have never been caught.Sully wrote:The passing game appears to be broken, like last year? That's a bold statement.

Guys, I was not predisposed to not liking this game. I suffered through 4 seasons of that atrocity last year because I do enjoy the game. But I can pop in 2004 and it's a completely different passing game. I know it's not my imagination.
Tell you what...maybe I just suck and I can live with that, but if you guys can offer advice that will help me with the passing, then I'm wide open for suggestions. All I want is to be able to select a play, see a guy with some seperation, and throw the ball to him and have him catch it.
Sully, what are AA's slider adjustments?

That is part of your issue. You can't throw the ball when your guy is open because chances are, he won't be by the time the ball gets there. Now, if you're changing to your wide receiver, pressing the Y button, and dude is still dropping it, then I guess there is nothing you can do. But the issue may be that you are just delivering the ball too late.Badgun wrote:All I want is to be able to select a play, see a guy with some seperation, and throw the ball to him and have him catch it.
Well that may be it, but why do you have to manual catch? You don't have to do it in Madden.dbdynsty25 wrote:That is part of your issue. I'm just saying...and since when to Madden and NCAA function the same in a given year? They have never been the same in terms of gameplay...just similar. Just give it a try and let me know what you find out...I personally have always manually controlled my receivers, but that's just me.Badgun wrote:Well that may be it, but why do you have to manual catch? I'm not having a good time with the passing either. The stats come out pretty good, but that's because the balls I catch but shouldn't and the balls I drop but shouldn't even out. And not in the "even good receivers drop passes every once in a while--IT'S SO REAL" sort of way. I mean, it seems almost like it doesn't matter what the coverage is in terms of the guy catching the ball. 48-yd bomb into triple coverage--complete. 16 yd pass to a wide open receiver over the middle--bounce off the chest. Not just once or twice a game. It reminds me a lot of NFL2K3.
Have played one game on Varsity--Notre Dame at home against Colorado St. The Rams busted out of the gate, as their RB had a few big runs in the first drive. After that, they were outscored 44-3 and the QB had the yips or something, because he just flat out sucked.
Obviously, I need to bump up the difficulty.
But I really dig the new running game. The jukes being mapped to the right analog helps a lot (noticed it helping my return game as well). Outside of the lead blockers occasionally acting lost, the blockers movement is much improved. Had a caravan of three linemen in front of me on one play...easy first down. But even though I dominated on the ground, the CPU would sometimes bust through and blow up the play in the backfield.
When the CPU ran, I was punished for guessing wrong and swimming the wrong direction as the RB headed my way.
Didn't notice any stupid drops by either side.
The game feels so much better than last years' turd on a disc. Just not sure I'm ready to take on ND's regular season schedule in a dynasty!

Still getting used to things, but I like the things I am seeing. For example, I was punting out of my endzone and had my punt blocked for a TD. I returned a fumble for a TD after one of those fumbles that bounces up right into your players chest - a 'look what I found' moment. I also had a field goal hit the upright and then bounce off the crossbar and out for a miss.
I tried a halfback pass and had one of those weird animations where the player is facing one way but manages to throw across his body in the other direction. But it was picked and went the other way for 6 - as it should. I am going to have to start using the white button to throw the ball away on occassion - something I never had to do in years past. But it beats taking a sack or throwing a pick.
The player models are a lot better than the midgets of past years. The animations make the game seem a lot smoother. Of course, it is a lot smoother on the Xbox than last year.
I also had fun playing as Va Tech at Duke. Marcus Vick on the option - sprint, fake, juke, 80 yards later a TD. I can see players online using and abusing Vick, just like they do with his big brother in Madden.
Sometimes the AI has looked very good, but sometimes I found myself shaking my head at the bad playcalling. But it was certainly better than year's past. I quickly learned that if you call the wrong formation and find yourself facing a 5 wide, you had better burn a TO and get the right people on the field. Last year you could line up with a 4-4 against a shotgun hail mary and not even worry. This year the matchups can kill you.

Speaking of half back passes, last year, you could run for at least 10 yards because the defenders dropped back and nobody pursued the RB. Or at least, no defender who could prevent the RB from getting to the outside, turning the corner and going upfield untouched until he was well across the LOS.
Did they fix that?[/list]

I started my University of Illinois dynasty playing 7min quarters using Bill Abner's AA sliders that he posted on his blogsite. I beat Rutgers 28-24 (it was such a seesaw battle that it was named by greatest game ever with a score of 790), and then I blasted San Jose St. 78-14. I thought the sliders were too easy and then I got blasted by Cal 72-21. I then lost to Mich St 40-17. I'm really liking the game. I last played NCAA 2004 prior to switching to ESPN NFL 2k5 last year. I had 2005 for about a week but I just wasn't feeling EA Sports at the time. As far as dropped passes and long bombs, I find that when I take control of my WR I'm more successful in my passing game as opposed to when I don't control the receiver. It seems most of my incompletions are overthrows, underthrows, or cpu defense. Maybe, just a few blatant dropped passes.
Great game, my only gripe so far is that it seems that once the CPU finds a seam while returning the football, the player gains some generous yards and big returns seems to happen too often at times. Graphics are good, not that much different from 05, I think they are saving the best stuff for PS3 and 360. Hope they bring some newer playbooks too as it seems to have stalled in that dep't.
I was able to play about a half of a game at the AA level last night, Iowa vs. Northwestern.
I stunk--there sure is a big difference between the two levels. Did see a couple of "make me cringe" dropped balls, but my 5-14 performance was mostly due to throwing on the run or into coverage. No one ever seemed to be open.
One big concern was the amount of "superman" plays the computer made. I found a DT in my backfield too often, in my opinion.
Northwestern looked bad on offense, but had a couple big plays to give them the lead. Iowa's defense looks pretty tight, so that doesn't worry me at all.
Really need to work on my passing abilities and my patience while running.
To get back to settings--what camera are you guys using? I went to classic; the NCAA camera felt too close for me.

I had a lot of fun playing last night. I played 2 dynasty games as Penn State vs. USF and Cincinnatti on default All-American. I ran all over both of them easily averaging 10 yards a carry. There were HUGE holes in the middle and on some sweeps the CPU players actually ran away from my ballcarrier...LOL. I struggled a bit in the passing game early, but still completed about 60% with a TD and a couple picks. I gave up over 200 yards to an impact RB for USF, but my defense bounced back against Cincy and gave up very little on the ground and had 9 sacks.
I also played some random halves of rivalry games on default AA(WVU/Pitt, Stanford/Cal, and FSU/FLA). Running on AA was again way too easy and it really didn't matter who I was using. Passing for me was OK. I could pass on default about as good as I could last year with sliders heavily in my favor so that is a good sign. The CPU really couldn't pass on me with much success (probably completed 35% of passes all night) except for a couple long bombs. They did *try* to dump it short though, which is a good sign. The lack of passing success didn't seem to bother me as much this year so far because the CPU could run with a lot of success and I had a blast defending it.
Overall, I have very high hopes for the game. I am a little disappointed that AA seems to be so tilted to the run and big plays (In probably the equivalent of 4 full games last night I saw at least one and usually 2 returns for TDs for each team each game) and needs some slider work, but EA football has always needed a lot of slider adjustments for me.
