He didn't change it. Barack is his birth name. People were calling him "Barry" as a nickname for a while and he decided to stick with Barack.
Lots of people use a nickname thru childhood and then revert back to their formal, birth given name in adulthood. Not a big deal.
The way his half sister, Maya, remembers it, Obama returned home at Christmas in 1980, and there he told his mother and grandparents: no more Barry. Obama recalls it slightly differently, but in the same basic time frame. He believes he told his mom he wanted to be called Barack when she visited him in New York the following summer. By both accounts, it seemed that the elder relatives were reluctant to embrace the change. Maya recalls that Obama's maternal grandparents, who had played a big role in raising him, continued long after that to call him by an affectionate nickname, "Bar." "Not just them, but my mom, too," says Obama.

More reaching...The Obama supporting blogger you cited wrote:"Whether these charges were legitimate under Alaska rules and regulations, I haven't a clue."
My Uncle William was called Billy or Bill until he went to college. His family, friends and strangers all now call him William (though my father slips up now and again). This is easily the silliest thing you've tried to use to cast aspersions on Obama. Do you think somebody once called McCain Johnny?JackDog wrote:Not just people. His family.JackB1 wrote:

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who caught that. So some liberal blogger is suddenly more adept at tax rules than the IRS. Oh wait, he hasn't got a clue (and not just on taxes I'd wager).Teal wrote:More reaching...The Obama supporting blogger you cited wrote:"Whether these charges were legitimate under Alaska rules and regulations, I haven't a clue."

So, lemme see if I got this straight: A librarian who doesn't want to ban books is "deadwood"? And a governor who bills the state over $16,000 for "lodging" at home, and $43,000+ for shlepping her husband and kids around, is a "reform executive"?RobVarak wrote:Much like the police chief, these reporters have no case. I don't know, Jack. There are plenty of white people who do this sort of thing, especially Eastern Europeans who have their names Anglicized. I remember Chris Novoselic, the bass player of Nirvana, changed his first name over to Krist because that's his given Croatian name. I believe he was inspired to do this by what was happening in Croatia in the 90s.JackDog wrote:EZSnappin wrote:

Newsweek did the article not me. I just read it and gave my opinion on it. If you think my opinion is silly so be it. I believe it says a lot about how he wanted to be percieved in the black community then and now. He was cool with Barry when he was in a mostly white crowd. But he knew what would sell in Chicago and it wasn't Barry. He wanted to be so accepted he went to Wright's church for 20 years. What's silly to me is that people believe that he sat in Wright's church for 20 years and says he never heard any racist rants. Keep it real Barr...Barack.
Well, this proves idiocy-so people who don't agree with you in the slightest ought to have their right to vote taken away...hmmm...alright. All I have to say is please, please...some talk show please get Hobbes on national TV soon!GTHobbes wrote:So, lemme see if I got this straight: A librarian who doesn't want to ban books is "deadwood"? Wow. I can't believe he really said that. If elected God forbid something happen to Obama and Biden steps in. He sounds like he doesn't think he's up for the job.GameSeven wrote:I haven't scrutinized the thread completely, but didn't see this posted...
As it's from yesterday it's probably old news already but:
