360's Are Coming!
Moderators: Bill_Abner, ScoopBrady
As I said in my original post; if you really need the money generated from "scalping" 360's, more power to you. If you planned ahead and had a strategy in mind for months to profit on the shortage - again, more power to you.
However, if you only now decided to take the lunch-hour of your well-paying job to hunt for systems, and stumble upon either 360's or accessories and buy them all ONLY for profit, it bugs me.
I would say give them to needy children, but that's not practical since most those kids couldn't afford the games (Giving the poor a videogame console is like giving a car to those who can't afford gas).
There are plenty of people, like many guys on this board, who aren't poor or needy but who also can't afford $1,000 for a 360 in the midst of the holidays. Passionate gamers who would LOVE a 360, but who for any number of reasons weren't able to secure one at launch. Most of them would be willing to make it worth a fellow DSP'rs time (by way of a nice 'tip') in exchange for a reasonably priced system...
I could've sold my original XBox on eBay for at least $150 (including accessories); instead I gave it to my neighbor. I don't look at it like giving away $150; I wasn't about to charge my neighbor for the system. I did sell my old 50" HDTV to a neighbor - for $500! - well under it's eBay value. The reason is that I believe in cutting your friends 'deals'. It's good karma and it makes your friends happy to get something that they otherwise might not be able to afford (or just would never 'bother' paying for).
I've sold iPod's etc. to DSP members for less than eBay value, and I will continue to post 'first offers' here. I guess I'm one of those people that looks at this place a little differently. If I had an extra 360 and could sell it on eBay for $800 or to a 'friend' on DSP for $400; I'd choose the $400 and the appreciation of that 'friend'...Oh, plus a BJ.

Maybe the issue is (and I could personally care less if bdunn buys 100 and sells them) that people thought we were starting threads here to help each other find one, not to help some guy make some money.pk500 wrote:Mix, Leebo:

I'm not trying to be some kind of moralist here. Hell, I'm damn near amoral at times. But aren't the people of DSP more important than the material objects we like to buy? Aren't the people the reason we come here?
Help me out on this one, fellas. I must be missing something.

I'm not sure what there issue is, but if it frustrates them to read his posts and they want to leave for a while, they should be able to without people giving them s***.

If my post was the equivalent of giving someone sh*t, then I think some people have paper-mache psyches around here.Danimal wrote:I'm not sure what there issue is, but if it frustrates them to read his posts and they want to leave for a while, they should be able to without people giving them s***.
I was trying to interject a bit of perspective, a step back for everyone groveling over this system that it's just a piece of electronic equipment.
If that's the equivalent of blowing someone sh*t, then I guess people are just a bit more touchy about the massive loss of not having an Xbox 360 the second it hit store shelves than I thought. Maybe they should visit a local children's hospital or nursing home. Maybe they should talk to the guy who his trying to rebuild his home on the Gulf Coast now and see if he's pissed that he didn't get his precious Xbox 360. That might put things into perspective.
Yeah, I know people want it, but it's a f*cking video game console. It's a big boy's toy -- that's all.
I'm through with this discussion, but I do want to call out Sport for his prior post. He really has summed up what Christmas is about and sets a hell of an example in here. Props to you, man!
Take care,
PK

Wait! I want to be sure I have this right considering one page ago you were saying it is fine for people to sell them (Supply & Demand) So the people selling them on eBay for $1000 are ok, but the guys who just want one should put in some time at a nursing home?pk500 wrote: If that's the equivalent of blowing someone sh*t, then I guess people are just a bit more touchy about the massive loss of not having an Xbox 360 the second it hit store shelves than I thought. Did anyone else who is a Directtv subscriber receive a "Happy Holidays" 10% off coupon from Directtv for Circuit City in the mail this week? If Circuit City gets any 360s in before January 15, 2006 (when the coupon expires), it's a no-brainer where I'll buy. Wonder what the odds are that my local Circuit City will get any in between now and then. If they do and I'm able to grab one, I'll never say anything bad about Directtv again.

Exactly. Because the guys who are selling them for $1,000 are doing nothing wrong. Sure, they could be benevolent like Sport and sell them at cost to friends. But they're doing nothing illegal or even immoral by selling them at the market price.Danimal wrote:Wait! But the guys who are whining repeatedly about not getting a piece of electronic equipment that we can all live without strike me as daft. Especially when the loudest moaner is someone who is getting his system FOR FREE.

Yes I complained about the fact that MS issued statements they would be available this week and they were not. I could care less about people seeling their machines.
But please spare me your scorn, you have no idea what my wife and I donate to charity, more or less all the activities I participate in for them. Until you do, why don't you save your normal preaching for someone who cares.

OK, I'll make this deal: I'll stop preaching if you stop b*tching.
Fair trade, if you ask me. If not, continue to b*tch -- and I'll continue to feel little sympathy because your free Xbox 360 didn't arrive on launch day.
Take care,
PK

Well excuse me for not looking up his personal history and current job status first. Even if he is unemployed, it still bugs me that someone here is bragging while others are going crazy trying to find stuff.pk500 wrote:For guys who are ripping BDunn for "rubbing it in our faces," consider his situation. He's unemployed, and he's just made some nice money for himself for the holidays, maybe even to help with costs for buying gifts for others.
I'd be pretty stoked, too.
Now, if he was employed, especially in a well-paying job, and came in her with that bravado, I'd cast a dismissing eye, too. But cut the dude some slack because of his situation. I don't think he's going to give us a sale-by-sale account from here on in.

Since you're so concerend with us taking into consideration BDunns situation, why you step down off the soapbox long enough to see why others might not care for his posts.
You why this kind of crap bothers me? I've been looking for Star Wars Galactic Heroes figures and Marvel Legends figures for my son (and myself as well, I admit) for months. He loves PLAYING with them. Yet sonething as cahrming as kids action figures has turned into nothing more than a treasure hunt. Employees and regular customers alike know these things sell for a markup on Ebay, so you've got people from all angles hoarding these for profit. I'm lucky to even see any of the new stuff on store shelves. I've got a full time job, so I don't have all day to hop around to 20 stores each day trying to get there at just the right time. I WAS going to get him some of the newer ones for Chirstmas, but I gave up on that. He constantly asks me about the new figures he sees in ads or promo inserts, and all I can do is tell him I'm trying to find them. My noly surefire way to get them is to pay 2-3 times retail.
Yes it's perfectly legal for people to get what they can out of it. The crazed consumers who "just have to have it" are just as much to blame by buying them on Ebay, thus fueling the whole cycle. I also blame the toy companies who come up with the short packs and variants, knowing it will get people worked up.
OK, I'm done. I've went way further with this than I wanted. But there you habe it. This is why I don't like hearing from people about how they scored a dozen of something for the sole purpose of making a profit on Ebay.

..and I blame that on Microsoft. They do this s*** on purpose, it's a norm in the industry nowdays. Leebo didn't even preorder one, nor did I, but I don't care if someone else preordered 10 of them and is selling them on ebay.Danimal wrote:Tell that to the estimated 60% of pre-orders that were not filled.MizzouRah wrote:I don't think they're getting s***, but I do think a simple pre-order could have solved the problems for people who have to have one right now.
I'm sure Microsoft will get plenty of sales before the ps3 becomes a reality.
I did preorder one and was told by EB that I would be receiving one at launch. I should have pre-ordered earlier, but was within the top third of pre-orders on the list at my local EB. I was told that I wouldn't get one until next year so I cancelled.MizzouRah wrote:Leebo didn't even preorder one, nor did I, but I don't care if someone else preordered 10 of them and is selling them on ebay.
I too don't care if someone sells 10 of them. I just don't think they should brag about it. I briefly considered selling my U2 tickets for a huge profit this spring. I didn't because I wanted to go, but if I would have sold them the LAST PLACE I would have bragged about how much I got for the tickets would be the U2.com forums. If I did sell U2 tickets for a profit the last thing I would do would be to go to the U2.com forums asking members for tickets. This is a video game forum. People that post here for the most part enjoy playing video games and I don't think it is cool to brag about selling things that people want and can't get and I don't think it is cool to ask for something that you already sold for a profit.
I'm sorry if I made it sound like it's the end of the world if I don't get a 360. I certainly have things in perspective in the grand scope of things. My donation to Katrina relief would pay for the difference between retail and Ebay for a premium 360. If I had the choice to get that money back and apply it towards a 360 I wouldn't do it. I was more or less just pointing out a couple things that bugged me. Next time I will just keep my thoughts to myself.
"I would say give them to needy children"
If someone "needs" a 360, then they are not needy at all.
Jeeze - I do want a 360 for myself but if someone is willing to pay me to wait until I have one for myself then I will.
and for those wondering - I did try to "give one to a friend."
My dad passed away back in May. My parents neighbor has always been very good to them. So, a month or so ago I stopped buy his house asking him if he wanted one for his kids for Christmas at cost... he said he was waiting on the ps3.
Here is an old thread on usenet about N64 from 9 years ago. Of course I am "Brad."

I think Sport was referring to underprivileged kids whose families couldn't afford a 360 even if they were 10-deep on shelves, not some brat who "needs" a 360 but can't get one because of the shortage.

On a lighter note, I sold my extra one for $800 last night. That $400 profit I made will go a long way to helping finance my kids' Christmas. Things are a little tighter for us this year as we bought a new van back in July and I'm still paying for braces for one of my kids. I was probably going to have to dip into my savings and now I won't have to.

It comes from: WM WIRE computer system at work.
Thanks, AtXj for an on topic post... Unfortunately, for those of us who really desire a system, we'll have to wait until MS can provide enough units so it's not profitable to resell them. Anybody have any info on the average price on ebay?AtXj wrote:Some more news concerning the topic...
