It's looking like Peyton could be done for the year.

And a generation of Colts' fans -- hell, nearly all of the Colts' fans -- will learn what it's like to have a losing season for the first time. I feel bad for Peyton, but it will be humorous to see the wheels fall off the Colts' fan bandwagon.

Sure is looking like it's more than a rumor !

Jim Irsay: Peyton Manning ‘out for awhile’

http://nfl.si.com/2011/09/08/jim-irsay- ... or-awhile/

"The mystery surrounding Manning’s injury has been arguably the preseason’s most fascinating storyline. The initial word was that he just needed a couple extra weeks to recover from offseason neck surgery — then the Colts signed Kerry Collins out of retirement, leading to speculation that Manning’s injuries were more severe than first thought. And Wednesday, Colts exec Bill Polian confirmed that Manning would miss Week 1.

Now, Irsay’s cryptic announcement that Manning will be “out for awhile” figures to lend credence to the theory that Manning might not suit up at all this year. Later, Pro Football Talk reported that Manning would undergo another procedure, possibly as soon as today, but that the plan was still for Manning to play this season despite having to miss “significant” time."

The Pack is looking really good so far. It's scary to think that the Superbowl winners now have the dozen or so guys that were injured late last season healthy now, plus a rookie weapon in Cobb. These guys look for real.

I'd argue that this division is so weak, a well coached team could win 9 games this season.

True. So that eliminates Houston, because it's coached by Gary Kubiak.

Fantastic thriller. Credit to NO for taking it to the last play. Just a yard short.

Yup...hell of a game no doubt. Glad I paid 43 bucks for Brees...a scant 25 bucks less than the dog killer. Deal of the century.

Cobb's kickoff return was one of the best I've ever seen. If that had happened against me in Madden, I'd have been over here bitching about the realism in the game. :D

Saints did a great job coming back, but after this game and last year's Seattle playoff game, have to wonder about their defense. It looks pretty bad.

Cobb's return was great, but that barely overshadowed the putrid smell of the new kickoff rule. People are buzzing over Cobb's Madden-style return, but let's see how enthusiastic they are about kickoff returns after seeing a C-130 parachute drop of touchbacks this Sunday and Monday.

Stupid, stupid, STUPID rule.

My biggest problem with the new rule is the hypocrisy. The NFL said it changed the spot of the kickoff to enhance player safety. That's a crock.

When players make the rare decision to return from deep in the end zone or the kickoff is short, the phalanx of hurtling special team gunners will get a 5-yard head start from last year and be able to obliterate the return man that much faster. It's a violent damn game; that's why we watch it.

Keep the kickoff spot at the 30.

Just watched it, wow.. what a game. New Orleans definitely had a shot to tie and win that game.

Good start for the NFL, that's for sure!

I don't think it's a crock, but more of a case of cutting the baby in half instead of trying to find a real solution. They are trying to improve safety by reducing the number returns -- statistically, that makes sense, even if a dangerous play is still included. And I think the only way they could have really made it safe was eliminating it completely, which would have caused a minor revolt among fans, not to mention eliminated the onside kick.

What I don't like is that they didn't compensate by having touchbacks start at the 25 or 30. That would have added more strategy to the kickoff. A kicker might be less inclined to boot a touchback if the offense was going to get the ball at the 30. But then you'd be back to the safety issue.

Colinsworth had an interesting thought on switching the kickoff to the punted safety kick variety, with the idea that the extra hangtime and shorter distance would keep the returners from reaching maximum speed before contact in some cases.

Coaches were supposedly experimenting with hanging the ball up, to see if the average field position after a return was inside the 20.

Teams will adjust. Maybe some older kickers who are more accurate will have harder times holding onto jobs because they can't produce as many touchbacks. You would also think there would be fewer attempts to angle the kick towards the sideline, resulting in kickoffs going out of bounce and the receiving team being awarded the ball at the 40 yard line.

If the average starting field position is reduced, you'd think there would be less scoring but last night's game doesn't support that, though it featured 2 of the best offenses in the league.

If they are so concerned about safety then just eliminate the kickoff and start at the 20 each time. Pk is right -- the new rule is a crock and takes away an important part of the game. Sure, Cobb's return was fantastic, but he got fussed at for taking the ball out of the endzone and knelt down on the next kick per coaches' orders. I love watching kick returners try to break the big one and that aspect is going to be greatly diminished with the new rule.
