That's a really good idea JRod. When I first got WE8I for the Xbox I tried to think of ways to re-map the controls but that method never ocurred to me.

Have any of you guys thought about using this controller:

http://gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=801827

Somebody mentioned it at OS and I went to my local to check it out. It has the white button over the left trigger and the black button over the right trigger. Basically, it is like the 360 controller--but not as high quality.

I might try it out. The thing is, I still don't think I'll use the black button that much. Even when playing the PS2 version I rarely use the corresponding R2 button.

JimD,

I would consider that except for the switch of the "Y" to the "black" and vice versa works brilliantly. You only use the "Y" button from through passes on offense and to have the keeper come out on D. To be honest I use the black button much more often.

Its a simple switch and hard because my brain has to unlearn the set-up but its makes the s-controller work much better with WE.

A question for those playing ML games...

How tough are the mid-level/bad teams in this version? Because in WE8i, you could have AC Milan or Real Madrid with the best talent in the world, and yet a scrubini of a team frustrate the sh*t out of you. It's like each of their eleven would play like they had the talent of Pele and the heart of Gattuso out there. And they stay on your ass non-stop on defense. They would tackle you like there was a prize for snapping your leg in half because that is what they would do all game. Granted, I always played on 5*, but still....

Basically, is there any difference in ML play this time around?

Just had My most exciting game of WE9 using 20 min and laying off the speed burst. I came back from 2-0 down to get a 2-2 draw.Totally controlled the play in second half and wound up feeling unlucky to only draw.
Felt much more like a real game. Being able to be much more patient knowing there was alot of game to be played helped alot.

Was nice to have the other side gasping for breath in the 2nd half for a change. Laying off the speed burst really helps.

Was a super start to a new season of the Spanish league. I feel like I can score now. Confidence is sexy and fun.

That's good stuff. Like I said earlier in the thread bumping the gameplay up to 20 minutes or more is ideal for realistic footie matches whether you're up or down in the score sheet. The speed shoulder button can be used, but only wisely because you can get burned easily on a counter attack by the CPU.

I find that this year's version has shifted from the individual fakes and moves to more precision passing where you get the whole team involved. Reading the radar is important more than ever. Using the right moves, making the right passes, and executing set pieces in the right situations is just undeniably satisfying and scoring a goal gives you that extra proud moment I didn't feel in ealier versions.

Very well said in the above posts, XXXIV and 10s. Agree!

You also have to be more careful on defense because fouls are called more easily and more often, which is realistic. No more "bull in the china shop" defense like in past editions of WE.

Take care,
PK

I finished a season in the dutch league with psv, and ajax played noticeably different than say nec breda. on 3* the cpu is still a bulldog though. I didn't get a chance to play vs. any other top clubs though. in friendlies, better clubs definitely play better.

I'm going to start an EPL one this weekend b/c I finally got a wicked option file online. then I'll know better.

I've also noticed my play is dramatically better when I lay off the R1 on offense. it's so hard when it was an important part of WE8. It's virtually an automatic turnover in the offensive half if I use it now.

I also play much better defense by using my defender's body rather than quick-tackle (x on ps2), much like old PES on PS1 rather than other WE games.

That was me that posted an up close pic of that afterglow on OS last year.

I stoped using it due to its poor quality, I went through 2 of them in as many months.

I was just using a regular X Box controller, I am going to try out JRod's suggestion and swap the Black and Y buttons.

Had a 4-3 Brazilian victory over Japan with the 20 mins. Game is getting funny especially when you cheat.

Since I have been using Real Madrid I did notice something that I thought odd.
Why do Ronaldo and RCarlos have more stamina with Brazil than they do with RMadrid?....

I caved. I did the "Keep it!" from Gamefly on this bad boy.

I have only won 2 games (I've played over 20), both against the CPU.

I can't score with any consistency.

I can't play defense worth a damn.

I can't play offense worth a damn.

I even touch a guy and I get called left and right for a foul, but "smart" players like Zeppo can literally trip me and not get a call. I don't get it.

I can't shoot a ball on net to save my life.

I can't stop a guy from dribbling right through my defense and putting one in net against me.

I can't stop playing this damn thing, either. I can't figure out why.

Had my first really big win today, playing on 4*. Beat Villareal 7-0 as Barcelona with Ronaldinho getting a hat trick in the 90th minute. My team had yellow arrows and they had green replicate the home field advantage. But earlier I managed to lose 1-2 to Willem II as Real Madrid. Football's a funny game. :)

Good game 34 and Japan ain't necessarily a walk in the park. Not in real life anyways. When you mentioned cheating, I thought you got a bunch of cash already buying the best players in the world.

Feanor; 7-0 on 4*, that's impressive man, may I ask you what formation you used and I know you're good at free kicks, so how many of the goals were from FK's?

This is new to this iteration of the game, but here's my take. If you tackle (A button) 2x team (X button) or sprint (R trigger) there's an enormously high chance of a fould being called. Too high, IMO. But there are times when simply bringing the defender close to the ball handler will result in a trip, tackle or steal, usually without a foul. The key is having the patience to let the player do the work. I generally do not have this patience, but to paraphrase Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction, I'm trying real, real hard.

Oh, plus Zeppos is a savant. He does all that "super cancel" and black button stuff that is harder than Chinese math for those of us who are mortal. And he cheats by scoring on free kicks. :)

Don't short-change yourself, Japan is no slouch. I believe they were in the final eight of the 2002 World Cup.

An easy move to pull off without using the black button- Shot fake by pressing x and then before releasing quickly press a...totally throws the defense off and leads to some sweet hilight goals.

Oh, you have no idea. Zeppo, you're a great guy. And I know you're trying to be as helpful as possible when we play by explaining all these things...but I can't remember 90% of what you told me.

All the times that he says "super cancel" I probably have the look that Norv Turner did on the sidelines for Oakland last year..."huh? I know that means something....ummmm".

He'll explain something that I KNOW is useful, but my little peabrain is just focused SOOO hard on this digital little guy running around, trying to time the redirection of the ball, trying not to dribble it right into somebody else...I really think it sounds like that teacher from Snoopy: "wah wahh wahhh wahhh wahh wahhhhhhh". I honestly don't even hear things most of the time when I'm playing this damn game.

I get frustrated from time to time because I'm trying to just bump shoulders and do something, but then he pulls off some crazy move. I mean, I'm dribbling the ball. I'M IN POSSESSION OF THE BALL. Then, here comes Zeppo...splits right in front of me, kicks me in the groin, steps on my scrotum, laughs, spits on me, and the ref calls a foul...ON ME!

Meanwhile, my shoelaces touch his and I get fouled immediately.

I have yet to grasp the concept of the foul calls in this one, but I can't stop playing it. Not even close.

We need to play some then TC, cause I feel the same way at times. At least then maybe things will cancel themselves out. I even try to use the black button when dribbling, but sometimes it just doesn't seem like it matters.

I cant wait to play myself. I feel for you Terry, all that sh*t you are describing is me as well.

Me and PK had two matches last night, and although I was soooooo close a number of times, nil to show for 2 matches. Sh*t, one time I stole the ball from him a bit past midfield on his side of the pitch. So there I am one on one me and the goalie only!!!....What do I do!?

Hit the GD MFing!! Pass Button!!!!! The damn pass button on a breakaway all alone goal situation!! I hit F*cking PASS instead of shoot....Gah! I am going to have an anurism playing this game.

All of you are f***ers !!!!

I didnt need to have this game but I went and bought it anyway. Was up late feeding the baby 2 nights ago and watched some EPL game on FSC because there was no college hoops to be found at 1 am.

I likely wont get to play until tonight when the Mrs goes to work and I get the runts to sleep. I figure I probably wont score a goal until next week.
