I don't even want to think of the thread titles that Teal would come up with for DSP Poker nights....

Regardless. The sex stuff does usually come over as crappy in video games but just from the cut scenes I've seen of GTA so far it looks to me like they've managed to capture the seediness of it all. It would be hard to recreate the dark underbelly of society without delving into prostitution, strip clubs and porn just as it would be silly to leave out drug use and violence. Honestly I'm all about the soap box multiplayer but if the sex adds to the single player story (which I think it does) then more power to it.

I am so giddy about this game it's sad...

Just the term 'Poker Nights' would sound so wrong...

Who is crazy enough to go to the sausage fest known as Midnight Launch?

Is that tonight or tomorrow night anyway? I just need to know when I can get my game at lunch. LOL.

I might, because I don't want to get out tomorrow. I'm taking a day off work, and I just want to get up in my PJ's, house shoes, a cup o Joe, and crank up the 360. I don't intend to play it tonight...just go get it and get my tired ass in the bed...

LOL...sausage fest :D The only Midnight Launch I went to was to get my Dreamcast back in 1999...and I regretted it. Some seriously weird people were there that night.

Got an email from amazon yesterday saying they notified the carrier to pick it up. Checked the status this morning and it was picked up in Bell, CA which is a short freeway ride from where i live. Should have it by the time i get home from work, and I didn't even pay for shipping.

Screw midnight launch. I would have to go to bed when I got home anyway.

I have the game prepaid but have to travel to Chicago (Libertyville) for a day trip tomorrow. Leave the house around 7am, get home at 11pm or so... so I can't get the game until Wednesday. Was debating finding a midnight place tonight so I could play it tomorrow night when I get home... but then I'd be too tired at the meetings tomorrow.

Got it. Played it. Can't drive straight.

Realized that I'd just spent 5 minutes watching a TV show inside a videogame at 1:30a.m.

Going to sleep. :)

Seriously, the world is amazing. The phone seems like an elegant way to solve some interface issues, and the tutorial section is interminable...

8O Never seen anything like this. Just went on a date bowling (a full bowling game, mind you). The day and night cycles aren't as fast as in previous games, and I really like Niko-good lead character.

This game is unreal. Played some online last night for a minute, and was laughing my ass off-lots of fun. More impressions later...

I was crazy enough to do the midnight sausage fest and I've never seen so many people waiting to pick up a game before. If I had known how long it was going to take (I was basing it off of past Madden at Midnight events) I would have just skipped it and picked it up on my way home tonight. I'm glad I got it last night though. I was able to play for about 45 minutes (almost ready to go on that date teal was talking about) and now I don't have to stop on my way home from work at 7:00 tonight. I can't wait to get in more time with it. So how does multiplayer work? I couldn't find a way of even looking at MP games. Do they explain it as you progress in the story? I know, I know, RTFM.
I am a patient boy.

I also ventured out for the midnight launch and found a line 100 strong or so at my local Gamestop. The sad realization of what my life has become sunk in when I looked around and realized I was the only one in line who didn't look like one of the thugs in a GTA game.

That said, I went home and popped it in until 2AM.

And...WOW.

This is one heck of a game. The city is so immersive, detailed and 'alive' that you don't have to 'suspend disbelief'; it's like peering through a window into an alternate but familiar world.

The voice-acting is strong, as are the camera angles. It takes some time to figure out how to drive, and what to do next, but the game doesn't let you languish or sit confused for too long. Even in my brief time, I can tell this is a story/ride that will rival the best Hollywood can offer in terms of action flicks.

Then, I jumped online. OMG. The whole city is open, it's just crazy. The Radar makes it so that fights are constant, and you can always find the enemy, but you can wander off and search for weapons, better vehicles etc. while the fight rages on. Hope in a car with a bunch of teammates and 3 of you can stick your heads out and shoot while the driver looks for enemies to run over.

It truly feels like a living/breathing city that you're a part of. Easily the most immersive environment ever in a game.

I ended up buying the 360 version for DLC/Online and because it won in my poll last night. I had 2 problems with it:

1. I've been playing my PS3 so much that I'd forgotten that the 360 sounds something like a jet-engine. This made it difficult because I had to keep the volume low so as not to wake the wife and child with gunfire and profanity at 1AM.

2. There is some aliasing, and occasional pop-in, but neither detracts from the game in any way.

On the positive side, this is a game that really needs voice communication online, because even in my brief TEAM DEATHMATCH session I had several instances where communication helped. A random teammate and I both ended up chasing an opponent to the outskirts of the city and onto a bridge. I got off my bike and took him down; then picked the bike back up and started to head back. My teammate looked around and didn't see a vehicle, and called after me for a ride because it was a LONG walk back into town. He ended up car-jacking a ride before I got back to him, but that kind of communication will definitely play a role. Other teammates were searching separately to find the Helicopter, or discussing where to find weapons or the enemy.

All in all I came away impressed and anxious to play more.

Scoop:

MP is accessed via your cellphone in SP. Just bring up the cell phone, and select multiplayer, then you get choices there, and join in! Sport's right about the MP...it's insane. We just did a couple of team deathmatch games, but it's a whole lot more than shooting one another. You get credit for running over guys, fighting them and beating them, etc. Also, there are weapons lying around that you can find. One guy last night managed to find a rocket launcher, and it turned the match around for his team. You can get a four door SUV, get your teammates to ride, and all of you (including the driver) can shoot out of the windows-it's quite a thing!

I can't wait to get some DSP'ers in a game of Cops and Crooks, or just freeroaming around the city, making up gametypes. I read of one that was called 'King Kong'...4 guys got on top of a skyscraper with rocket launchers, and the rest commandeered heli's to try and kill them. Sounds like fun!

No midnight line for me as I was able to take this home after my 6-9 shift with the promise that I would not play it until it was midnight somewhere.

Played for about an hour. I was tired and did not get too deep but I was not blown away. Not that is is bad by any means what-so-ever. It just felt like another GTA with better graphics. That said, I do see the potential for this game to be absolutely incredible especially with the MP aspects, but I did not get much or a 'wow' factor in my first hour or so.

Well, sat in Pearson airport until noon today... flight was supposed to leave at 10:10 to get to Chicago 10:40am... but sadly :) there were problems and the flight couldn't leave (maintenance issue). By the time it's noon and we haven't left yet it's too late to get there for the afternoon meetings, so unfortunately :) we have to reschedule. Left the airport picked up the game, and am at the office now.. can't wait until tonight!

I have the 360 version. What's going on with the blur or tearing when you drive under the bridge in the very first part of the game. Looks like the shadows cause a lot of blur or something. Looks terrible.

I think the game is good. The combat system is the weakest part of the game for me. Too clunky.
