NFL Season 2009

Pk,
Thought that he did a spin move on the sack he had - might have been just a half spin though. You're right though - with just frigging bull rushing he still pushed the tackle around like a rag doll on quite a few plays. In the second half he did look far less effective and I think that his ankle likely tightened up at half time.
Best wishes,
Doug

Re: off the field action in the superbowl...
The Who performance eliminated all enthusiasm I had for picking up the special Rock Band track of the smashup made available Sun night.
Commercials were the worst in a long time. Only the Letterman one was notable IMO, given the increase in shots Leno/Letterman have been taking at each other since the recent late-night kerfuffle.

Nope, that was a straight bull rush on the sack. Freeney knocked the tackle back on his heels and then blew straight by him, grabbing Brees by the shirt and dragging him down.
I didn't see a spin move all night by Freeney because I don't think his ankle would allow him to do it. Still, a ballsy performance by the Syracuse alum. (Had to get in that Syracuse reference!)
Cowher made the excellent point at halftime that the long halftime could create a better chance of Freeney's ankle tightening, to which you alluded in your post. Very good analysis by Cowher.

I thought there were only three commercials worth a sh*t, in this order:webdanzer wrote:Commercials were the worst in a long time. Only the Letterman one was notable IMO, given the increase in shots Leno/Letterman have been taking at each other since the recent late-night kerfuffle.
1. Snickers-Betty White/Abe Vigoda commercial. Best spot by a mile. Laughed my ass off at that one.
2. Dave, Oprah and Jay pimping "The Late Show."
3. Doritos ad with kid slapping Mom's date and then imploring date not to touch his mom or his Doritos.
The rest either were mediocre or flat-out sucked.

Freeney seemed to run out of gas after the first quarter. But Saints took the underneath patterns most of the night so it was hard for the Colts to pressure Brees the whole game.
They gave up a lot of easy 5-10 yard gains that kept Saints drive going.
That first quarter, Colts were gashing them with runs and Manning was in a good rhythm. But those long drives by the Saints killed the Colts momentum and they never found that rhythm again.
Would never have guessed the Saints D would hold the Colts to 17 points.

It's the same formula that won the Colts their SB against the Bears. Play against a Cover-2 that's missing its best pass rusher and you can just pick them apart. The Bears that year were a league average defense without Tommie Harris. The Colts without an effective Freeney are in the same boat. To make an unfortunate comparison, given recent events, you need to have that Warren Sapp-like figure or a good QB will exploit the seams in the zone all day long.
I give enormous credit to Gregg Williams for changing his stripes. He's a blitz-heavy theoretician, but he recognized that's a recipe for disaster against Manning. He played conservatively, jammed the Colts WR's at the line and was willing to give up the line of scrimmage...assuming that the Colts wouldn't take advantage. The Colts running game never was really stopped (except for that horrible last drive of the first half when the Saints were playing 9-man fronts.).
The onside kick was gutsy, and I'm always a fan of that play. Surprise onside kicks are the most underutilized high percentage play in the NFL. Great call.

Didn't catch any of the commercials and watched the game in about 30 minutes. Thank you DVR. It's the only way to watch football IMO.

Why is everyone so excited about Cromartie to the Jets? Do they realize that he hasn't been the same player since 2007? He's a shell of himself. Sure, he's still better than most DBs, but he's not the ridiculous specimen we saw in his first two seasons.
Same thing with Peppers to the Bears. Do they realize that he hardly ever plays a full game? He's lazy and a he gets injured a lot. Not exactly a recipe for success in the NFL.

For me it's because the Bears entire starting defensive line had 17 sacks last year and Peppers alone had 10.5. Having Peppers would make teams choose between doubling Tommie Harris or Julius Peppers. I think he would make the whole line better. He's not the be all, end all but I would surely welcome him to the Bears.dbdynsty25 wrote:Why is everyone so excited about Cromartie to the Jets? Right, but at the cost of Peppers, you could get two guys that could combine to give you the same numbers...assuming Peppers doesn't get hurt again.ScoopBrady wrote:For me it's because the Bears entire starting defensive line had 17 sacks last year and Peppers alone had 10.5. What happened to Oguleye, Alex Brown and one other DE that they had?
They had some good numbers for a couple of seasons around the time they went to the SB.
Most of those guys were young, maybe still younger than Peppers?
Anyways, it sounds like Lovie is pulling all stops to win this year because he's probably out if he doesn't.

Why would you want to spread out that number to 2 guys? They did that last year when both starting DE's had 12.5 sacks and you see how that did for the line as a whole. Vanden Bosch is already gone and that leaves Kampmann and Peppers. Give me Peppers.dbdynsty25 wrote:Right, but at the cost of Peppers, you could get two guys that could combine to give you the same numbers...assuming Peppers doesn't get hurt again.ScoopBrady wrote:For me it's because the Bears entire starting defensive line had 17 sacks last year and Peppers alone had 10.5. News for Dolfans, it looks like the Dolphins are keen to bring back Pennington as a backup to Chad Henne, that's unless Pennington gets a serious offer from another team to become a starter.
After multiple shoulder surgeries I think Pennington needs to look at a backup role. Henne would love to see him back with the Phins this year.

Dolphins are making a serious offer to Karlos Dansby. Btw it's spelled with a C Karlos.

Dolfans...gay term.
Anyway...I'd love Dansby and Rolle on D. Not gonna happen though unless the Dolphins open the checkbook which as we know, they really have only done one time recently...and that was for the recently released Joey Porter. That lasted all of two years. Skins will sign Dansby and Rolle will end up on the Giants if I had to guess.

I've got odds that by this time next year you'll be regretting that statement, at least about Peppers. I like the Taylor signing.ScoopBrady wrote:Bears just signed Peppers and Chester Taylor. I like both signings.
Edit: 40 million guaranteed for three years! Holy crap, it's even worse than I thought.
