My prediction is when the dust settles, the Broncos will be buried beneath a huge amount of dust from the ceiling they pulled on themselves.
Boom, this is not directed at you at all, just my opinion on Bronco fans trying to say this isn't a big loss for the organization.
Given the Cutler situation, they did very well with the trade. Certainly got a lot of value. However, before the McDaniel business began, would any Bronco fan have even conceived of their franchise QB being traded? No. This is a monumental case of poor player management by a coach and front office. They lucked out that the Bears wanted to nab Cutler enough that they clicked the Buy It Now button.
If the shoe was on the other foot, I would be extremely pissed as a Bears fan. "My team had to trade their Pro Bowl QB because the new coach has a Matt Cassel man crush?" Do you have any idea how many pairs of blue and orange Zubaz pants would be soiled with rage?
Even if they manage to draft a QB of Cutler's ability with one of those number 1s -- highly unlikely this year given their draft position and the depth at QB -- they are looking at 2-3 years before they get that production back. Whereas they could have easily put together a team that would have been a perennial AFC West champ with some defensive additions and a little stability at RB.
I guarantee that, Cutler's behavior or no, the Broncos phone was ringing off the hook. You simply do not get the opportunity to trade for young QBs who make the Pro Bowl by their third year and, at worst, look like they will have Drew Brees's career. Could he flop in Chicago? Of course. But I like my team's chances a lot better now even with the loss of those picks.
