Those pesky Cameroonians (?) advance thanks to a 1-1 draw from Italy and Sweden.
Sweden opened up the scoring on a nice through pass to Ibrahimovic in the 19th minute. The Italians poured it on to finish the first half but could not put one in the net.
The second half the Italians decided to take a page out of Cameroons book, knowing they needed the win to advance, and switched to a 3-4-3 pushing everyone up. Gattuso was able to tie the game off a shot just inside the box in the 71st minute.
The final 20 minutes was like a heavyweight bout with each side exchanging scoring opportunity after scoring opportunity in an effort to advance to the knock-out stage. Neither team could get the go-ahead goal thus confirming Cameroon's bid to the next round.

Spain progressed to the Semi-Finals of the International Cup after a hard-fought victory over a resolute Croatia side. Having qualified in third place from Group C, Croatia stormed out of the gates and and found themselves deservedly ahead in the 14th minute. Following a free kick in the Spanish half, Dario Srna found striker Bosko Balaban who turned past his marker before deftly chipping Iker Cassillas from almost 18 yards out.
The Group A winners responded by peppering the Croatia goal with shots but many of these were from distance and did little to trouble Pletikosa in the Croatian net. Fernando Torres, in particular, was unable to escape close marking from Igor Tudor.
Croatia almost made it two nil when Klasnic beat Pablo Ibanez for pace before dragging a shot inches wide with Cassillas completely stranded.
Spain found themselves level, against the run of play, in the 27th minute following a quick counter attack. David Villa raced onto a long through-pass by Joaquim before cutting inside the Croatian left-back and firing a quick snap-shot on goal. Pletikosa was able to make the initial save, unfortunately, his rebound landed right at the feet of Raul who finished into a gaping net.
The first half finished with both teams exchanging chances and Croatia definately having more of the possession while Spain were content to attack on the break.
Ten minutes into the second half Spain were in-front. Villa once again turned provider, this time providing a short through ball for Joaquim to burst into the box and finish past Pletikosa. The Croatian keeper was able to get a hand to the ball but the shot proved too powerful.
Joaquim scored his second of the match in the 63rd minute when a miscue from the Croatian left-back allowed him to race into the box unopposed, round the unfortunate keeper and finish into an empty net. A fortunate goal to be sure.
The remainder of the match continued as before with Croatia having the lions share of possession and Spain attacking on the break. The lack of pace in the Croatian front-line that had been noted in the group stages proved to be their achilles heel here as they did not have the personnel to get past the pedestrian Spainish defense.
3-1 Spain final score.

Thanks, but the scoreline flattered me greatly. Pleitikosa saved my ass with a couple blinders and I was lucky to convert one of my very few chances.Blublub wrote:Congrats Macca and nice job Rob - I have a feeling that might be the closest anyone gets to knocking off the Spanish.
The site is now updated.
Great game, Macca. It was nice to at least be able to talk LFC football while getting my behind kicked.

USA 3 England 2
The USA and England battled to a thriller, with the United States winning in stoppage time on a McBride trap and volley. The scoring started with Lampard scoring unassisted on a shot from just outside the box. The United States quickly came back, first on a close Wolfe shot in the 21st and then on a McBride strike from outside the box in the 26th minute. England had a chance to tie it just before the half, as Onyewu took down an English attacker in the box. But Tim Howard saved a well-placed Lampard shot, and the score was 2-1 USA going into the half.
The second half was action packed, but there was no scoring until the 89th minute, where Lampard placed a perfect strike from 20 yards out. The game looked like it was headed to extra time. But in stoppage time, Beasley crossed the ball to McBride in the penalty box. Holding off Rio Ferdinand, McBride chested the ball to himself and side-volleyed the ball into the net to guarantee a passage to the semis for the States.
Great game lsdean.

France 3 - Argentina 1
Goal striker of the Tourney so far, T. Henry was the difference as he scores a hat-trick vs Argentina. Just unstoppable tonight, with his short burst of speed, he was the player to watch.
Both teams had ample chances for scoring but a last minute decision by coach Slumberland to substitute Barthez before the match even started paid big dividends for the French.
Good luck Slumberland on the next round.

Argentina 1 - France 3
Henry once again proved to be the difference, this time with ample help from third-string keeper Landreau and his incredible performance. Argentina generated good chances on goal, only to be turned away again and again thanks to Landreau's acrobatic and eerily prescient goalkeeping.

5 CZE - CMR 2
Eto'o 21
Nedved 30
Rosicky 51
Koller 54, 81
Baros 67
Djemba Djemba 79
Bookings: Red - Saidou (CMR); Matouhou (CMR); Douala (CMR)
It plagued Cameroon throughout the tournament and it ultimately sent them packing - reckless challenges resulting in players being sent off. It took only 14 minutes before Saidou was ejected after a reckless last-man challenge. However, Eto'o made it look like it might not matter by putting the Lions on top only minutes later. It was all downhill from there. Nedved equalised in the 3oth minute and shortly thereafter Matouhou was also sent off, bringing Cameroon down to nine men. The deadly Czech strike force continued to punch holes through the depleted back lines and they were coasting with a 4-1 lead late. A bizarre "Elbow of God" goal by Djemba Djemba provided a glitter of hope for the Lions, which was soon dashed by a clinical strike by Koller against what had by then become eight men after Douala was also sent off. Cameroon desparately searched for a miracle in a pathetic 2-3-2 formation, but the Czechs held firm. A well-deserved victory for a superior Czech side.

That was a bold move and it payed off great for you. Are you sticking with the winning hand?Slumberland wrote:You'll notice that he's the only player that's scored for me the entire tournament. One pop of an ACL and we're toast. And I can't always depend on a performance like Landreau gave me in goal that last time!
