I have a confession to make. (EPL related)

Post by ScoopBrady »

I like Man U. I can't help it. Rooney is my favorite player out there right now and guys like Giggs, van Nisterooy, the Nevilles, and Keane are a joy to watch. I also like watching Ronaldo play though I'm not sure if I like him or not yet. I feel such shame since they are like the Yankees of the EPL. I still like the Rovers but find myself drawn to Man U as well. Does that make me a bad person?

Scoop,

I hate the Yankees, but LOVE the "Yankees of the EPL!"

Ronaldo is fabulous. He and Rooney are both around 19 years old! What a future they have! Honestly, my son and I both agree that Cristiano is the most exciting player we've ever seen. When the ball's at his feet, he's electric!

Back to being hated now...

I'll give you Rooney. He's an immature f*ck, but what a player!

Ronaldo? All flash to me. I've said it before, but I'd take Andres D'Allessandro of Wolfsburg (formerly of River Plate) as a playmaking midfielder over Ronaldo any day except for D'Allessandro's diminutive size. He's a better passer than Ronaldo, has just as many tricks with his feet, has more courage and has a better soccer brain. If D'Allessandro wasn't 5-5, 135 and was the same size as Ronaldo, it would be no contest, in my opinion.

Ronaldo has insane skill, but he's still too much Harlem Globetrotters to me, using all of those tricks to accomplish nothing but losing possession or making a stupid pass. He needs to tone down on the tricks and play football. If any manager can do that, it's Ferguson.

Still, f*ck Man U. I'm glad you like them. It will give me another person to needle when the Red F*cks lose. :)

Take care,
PK

Scoop, Welcome to the club, Rooney is my fave as well. Pk can degrade us all he wants but I believe we stomped his Magpies earlier this season 3-1 at St James. On a side note pk are we having GR2 night tomorrow?

Man U can lose every game, but I do admit that Rooney's a great talent. For some reason he seems too smug or something for me, so I can't root for him. Great player though, and he'll really be something special once he matures.

I agree with the Ronaldo detractors, he has talent but it seems like he just does a bunch of moves then gets stopped. I guess in the few games so far I haven't seen enough to impress me.

Scoop,

I am with you. I went to Old Trafford two years ago, bought a Keane jersey, sang "Keano, there's only one Keano!", and I was hooked. It was an unbelievable experience. I also went Upton Park (West Ham's ground) and Higbury, and actually had an awesome time at the Hammers game. But it's pretty hard to follow a team not in the Premier division, living here in the states. Meanwhile Man U is on the FSC almost every week. They are very accessible and it makes pretty easy for me to follow them. Hey, I am a diehard Buffalo Bills and Sabres fan, I have my share burdens! I make no apologies for rooting for United--they are my guilty pleasure.

Pretty tough on a kid who just turned 20! Did you see the Euro 2004? He was unbelievable, arguably one of the top-three players in the tournament, nearly carrying Portugal to the Cup. As for his lack of "playmaking" skills, he's really more of a winger and scorer, not really in the mold of a passer/set-up guy (other than crosses). Yeah, he gets a a lot of flak for his step-overs and such, but ultimately they are usually pretty effctive. I like the kid, he plays hard and seems to really care about winning and losing.

Jim:

Let's just say that Man U has gone from Beckham, who can't do anything but cross the ball and take free kicks, to Ronaldo, who has shown me little other than pretty ball tricks and tap the ball into the net. And yes, I've seen Man U a number of times this season. :)

Fair trade, if you ask me. :)

Keane, Giggs and Scholes still are the heart of Man U's midfield. Hell, both Giggs and Scholes have scored more goals this season than Ronaldo.

Ronaldo could learn a lot from Giggs about playing the game efficiently and effectively. I've always admired Giggs even though I hate Man U. The guy still is one of the best left wings in English football.

Ronaldo could become a great player. But he's not in Rooney's class right now, in my opinion.

I'd take Shaun Wright-Phillips over Ronaldo, too. That kid is amazing, considering who he's playing with at City (sorry, DaveT!).

Take care,
PK

jimd, how much were your tickets to the game? I could possibly be going to England in the next year or two and definately want to make a game at Old Trafford one of my stops.

If I recall, they were 60 pounds each. It was a Tuesday night game in the Champions League versus Olympiakos and it was sold out. The tickets were surpisingly easy to obtain. We arrived in London on a Monday night. First thing Tuesday morning I asked the owners of the place were staying how/if I can get tickets. After some funny comments based on why I would want to waste my time (they were Chelsea fans), they provided me the number to a ticket "tout" (scalper). I called the guy, and witin a few hours he delivered the tickets and I was on train headed to Manchester (2-3 hour ride I believe) with my wife and sister (who, in retrospect, were really good sports about my zeal to get to Old Trafford and ended up loving the experience).

PS-sorry about the double-post;still having forum performance issues.
