Curious on your thoughts on this (MVP related)
I was just reading some impressions of MVP from a guy who picked the game up on the IGN Xbox boards when I stumbled upon this post of his:
Alright, just finished one game final score 6-2. Hudson went 9, but not because I wanted him to but because I got Bobby Cox tossed in the 5th for arguing by mistake and when your mangager gets tossed you lose all of your managerial abilities and they become cpu controlled.
LaRouche was the star of the game he went 3 for 4 with a homerun (lefty) and two RBI's. I had a couple of diving catches at short by Furcal (he has great range) and a couple of great saves on wild pitches by Estrada. I only got one walk but I was swinging at most pitches, but like I said it is a lot easier to pick up pitches this year so people that complained of no-walks have no excuse this year IMO.
Overall a very smooth gameplay experience. "
I personally think that is cool as hell if true. I'm sure some of you won't like that and at this point I don't know if it's something you can turn off or not. I hadn't read about this feature anywhere yet so it really caught me off guard. What do you guys think of it?

I am a patient boy.

Somebody refresh my memory, but why/how do you argue calls in MVP? If it's user controlled, and there was something to be gained from arguing, then it makes sense that there should be something to be lost from arguing as well. Of course, it's a pretty "out-there" way of punishing you... maybe the bumbling CPU bench coach that's too stupid to take out a tiring pitcher will also send in the bat boy as a pinch hitter. Like db says, the game doesn't go completely to hell just because the manager takes an early shower.

If my memory is correct, you have to manually argue the call. Also I don't actually recall any benefit to doing it. So in effect it will never happen unless you make it happen.
Also I could swear that past titles have had this feature, didn't HH have the same thing in one version?

Everyone gets off on his or her own thing, I suppose. But yes, some others noticed this as well:Sudz wrote:the OS guys are GOING ape ahit crazy because you can't edit the height or weight of minor leaguers.

Sarcasm missed by many.

Gagnon, over at OS, is posting that you can definitely draw walks this year. He was playing the Brewers, as the Cubs, and drew 3 straight walks in the top of the 5th. He said that the Milwaukee pitcher was starting to tire, and actually threw 10 straight balls, before tossing a strike. The manager came out for a visit, it had a negative effect, and they quickly got the bullpen warming up.
Good sign.
Good sign.
Yeah... problem is, that is basically true in baseball period. Have you ever seen an umpire take back a strike or reverse an out call? I guess it makes sense that arguing the call in the game is as useless as arguing the call in the real MLB. I'm sure some managers will tell you that the point of arguing calls is to let the umpires know they screwed up and that they won't take it sitting down... s***, maybe we'll see a cut scene with the *ump's* confidence meter going down this year...Danimal wrote:If my memory is correct, you have to manually argue the call. And after thinking about it more, replacing user control with a bumbling CPU bench coach is just too strong of a punishment. Hell, maybe my manager will get suspended for a game and we'll forfeit the next game because the CPU controlled manager forgot to fill out the line up card... or my CPU manager will come out of the clubhouse not wearing any pants. It's no sillier than a CPU manager who won't take out a tiring starter in a 6-2 game.

theere over 30 pages of views and most are about the inability to edit ML players, and you can't have your own stadium in the owner's mode.
Waste of time. I've stopped reading the forums and am just going to play WE.

There are only two reason why a manager would argue a call in a real game IMO. First is to possibly fire up his team, maybe they have no life in them that night. Second is to protect a start player from arguing and getting tossed.Kazuya wrote:Yeah... problem is, that is basically true in baseball period. I guess there is a third, the manager wants the night off sitting in his office drinking Jack and Coke and going through 2 bags of Redman.

Think of it this way as well (which I seem to remember hearing in an interview somewhere, but don't hold me to it):
There are blown calls both ways in this game. Let's say you argue a blown call. PERHAPS that means there is a higher chance you get a blown call in your favor later in the game?
Sort of like college basketball coaches complaining to the refs all game for a call just so they can set up to get one later in the game.
Maybe that is the risk/reward with this. I know EA isn't that bright sometimes, but you would have to think there was a reward portion to this feature?

Well, a manager may also argue a call simply because they feel the ump blew it and they are pissed off. Or sometimes a manager has an issue with a particular ump.
It is typical of OS that the kids will hype a game and then once they have it on the top of the list they start to turn on it and bring it down to size. Must be a lot of journalism majors!
That is not a cut on OS. It servers an important sports gaming need and is a place I check daily, but it also has a young crowd and as hard as they try to control things, it can get out of hand. And these days the ability to edit the rosters is huge to a small but vocal segment of the population. Look at what happened to March Madness.
Roster editing has become a bigger issue simply because games are released so early that the game rosters are irrelevent by the start of the real season.

It's just impossible to read an OS early impressions thread for any game. That's not a knock on the site. It's just they get such a lot of traffic, from such a wide range of maturity and literacy levels, that it becomes a 30 page slog like JRod described. And I mean slog in the bad way, not the Donald Rumsfeld way.
The umpire thing sounds like something you'd try once, go "neat," and never do again. I know HH had players arguing calls but I don't remember managers doing it. The only thing that would make sense for it being in the game would be if it could have a +/- on player morale, the way a mound visit does.

from the manual:
A well timed argument can give your team an attribute boost, while a poorly timed one can frustrate your team and give them an attribute penalty. Sometimes arguments have no results. Listen to the commentators during the cut scenes to figure out which you received.
