the new kid

Post by thebigcaptain »

i just wanted to introduce myself with this first post.

when my stepson was very young, we lived in a neighborhood that wasn't the ideal place for playing outdoors with other kids. ducking behind parked cars during drive-by shootings wasn't the same hide and seek i remembered from when i was a kid. we decided to provide him with entertainment at home and we bought him a videogame console.

of course, there was super mario and the legend of zelda, but he and i most looked forward to playing the sports videogames.

bases loaded filled many hours and evenings for us. baseball videogames have gotten far more realistic, but have any of them been more fun than that early offering? for an old ny rangers hockey fan like myself, blades of steel was heaven on earth at the time. games like punch-out were hard fought between us(more than once his mother would have to come in to intervene).

then the 16-bit generation was upon us, and i remember bringing home the first nhl hockey from electronic arts. i was so excited i called angie into the room to see for herself just how real the hockey looked.

she was unimpressed.

lakers vs. celtics, madden football , and now i was hooked, my stepson was hooked, and even my wife was happy. she had the regular tv in the living room all to herself now. her "two boys" as she liked to describe us, were in front of the videogame set in adam's room.

nearly twenty years have passed since we first started gaming.
adam is two years out of college now, and we still play videogames regularly, especially the sports titles. he is back living at home now, and as a result, we have extra copies of most of the more popular sports titles from the last few years that we accumulated when he lived down in washington during college. now we anticipate the latest iterations of madden, and nhl, espn and ncaa every year and debate whether or not it's worth it to trade in last year's model towards this year's version.

we debate it, but we end up buying every year's offerings regardless.
what can i tell you?

we read the videogame mags, and we visit all the usual websites.
somehow, i found this page a while back, and was immediately impressed at just how very seldom the words "awesome" and "dude" appeared. i checked in on a regular basis to read some of the viewpoints on the sports titles that were clearly not being penned by a twelve year old.

gamefaqs this isn't.

just so you know, i favor 989's mlb over ea's mvp, and espn hockey on the xbox (though nhl is also a fun videogame to play if you slow down the hitting). i thought madden on the ps2 was a far superior product (in every respect other than presentation) when compared to the discounted espn football title, and i kind of swing back and forth as far as nba live and espn hoops are concerned.

my stepson loves mvp on his xbox, has already updated all the rosters and is busily destroying the rest of the national league with his new and improved ny mets. he just hopes that they make hitting a bit easier with this years version, other than that, he's content to stick with what he has.
me..i'm a yankees fan, so i just sit there waiting for last year's wounds to heal, biding my time.

i don't play online, i just haven't gotten to that point yet. maybe i prefer playing against someone i can smack back in person.

anyways, thanks for providing this space and this place, and allowing me
access to it.
i hope i haven't gone on for too long.
i'll spend the rest of the night figuring out how to stick an avatar up there next to my name.

glad you are posting, welcome to DSP.

That was a fun read, I also played Bases Loaded to death.

I even kept stats on a separate piece of paper like my old Harball days on the C64.

Lakers/Celtics and the first PGA Golf on the Sega Genesis, fond memories indeed.

ok, i give up. i'm andre adelson, not mario mendoza.
how did mario mendoza's name show up in that box up there?
i don't see that name on my profile page or my accounts page.
(nothing against mario, actually mario, you're welcome to the space, i'm just puzzled.)

Welcome Captain. I was a HUGE Bases Loaded fan. Played a full 80-game season with Utah...though it lost it's fun once I found out a money pitch. Still fire it up on the emulator every now and then.

And as for Mario Mendoza, all posters with under (I think) 100 posts get that label. (Or is it under 200 posts? I can't remember how I set it up...under 200 would be more apt.)

Welcome, El Capitain! Bases Loaded was fantastic -- loved the "plink" of the bat on every hit.

Don't be a stranger, man!

Take care,

Paiste was the MAN in that game! I always plunked the other team's best player to get them to charge the mound so they'd get kicked out.

Welcome aboard Captain. Oh, I crack myself up. Seriously though, you sound like you'll fit right in around here. Tell junior to stop on by as well.

Welcome, TBC. Glad you joined us. This really is a good place for both mature discussion of gaming and clever bursts of immaturity.

Jump in and fire away, we should start having our first big flamefest after the baseball games are released :D

Ahoy there Captain. Always wonderful to have new members. Bases Loaded to this day is still my all-time favorite baseball game.
