How WE 8 has increased my appreciation of ESPN NHL 2K5

Post by pk500 »

The incredible realism of Winning Eleven 8 is no secret to many cats in here who played the hell out of WE 6, WE 7, PES, etc. The last Konami soccer game I've owned is ESPN MLS ExtraTime for the Xbox, although I have played WE 6 on a PS2.

Anyways, the brilliance of WE 8 has caused me to stand in even greater appreciation of ESPN NHL 2K5 because it's not that far behind WE 8 in the realism derby when played with Grog's All-Star sliders. It's probably a couple of notches below WE 8, but it's pretty close when using Grog's sliders.

What makes WE 8 even more remarkable is that it has achieved its status as the most realistic team sports game on the market without a single slider setting available.

Take care,
PK

What has always been my favorite thing about the 2k series is the ai, you never feel cheated by it never does it seem like "oh that was cheesy" Even when they mount a come back ,you can have 7-0 dominations and always feel in total control and vice versa .

I dont feel that way with WE, when my players start doing weird stuff all of a sudden or just stop long enough for the ai to get the ball even when i have control, pisses me off seems im getting cheated which i hate.

Im sure its Konamis way of dealing with the pressure of the situation so i have a master league going were im gonna shore up my d with players with high stats in areas were i can help them deal with that .

But my "Ellesmere Port "boys havnt even reached the negotiation period yet. :D .

But as far as 2k i agree .Now they just need to do all the situational stuff like WE and keep Improving on the AI like WE hey i would buy updates for hockey every 6 months, bring it on.

PK , I agree 100%. EVERY TIME I play ESPN NHL2K5, I marvel at how great the gameplay is. It shares with WE 8 that "feeling" of every game having a different and distinct feel to it and how nothing feels "scripted".
It's hard to put into words, but it's that element that FIFA still hasn't captured. These 2 games are aming the elite!

That's a great point and one that shouldn't be overlooked.

I'd add High Heat 2004 (a game that requires very minimal slider adjustments IMO) and Tiger Woods 2005 PC to a very short list of games that are as realistic as Winning Eleven 8.

I love NHL 2K5, but it bugs me a bit that I can't get realistic stats. I know, I am a geek :) I also think it is step below WE and HH as far as the differences between players and teams. I am playing a season as the Penguins with Grog's sliders and some of my individual and team stats are pretty far off realism.

Leebo:

What stats are askew? My W-L, scoring totals, PP and SH percentage, GAA and save percentage for the Oilers in my season are uncannily accurate. Hits and faceoffs won seem a bit off, though.

My individual stats are pretty screwy, but that's just maybe the way I play. I think Rico Fata had 10 goals in my first 15 games. I couldn't get Recchi and Lemiuex to score much at all even though they took a lot of shots.

My percentages were OK, but I was getting about half the power play opportunities as real life. If I tried to up the penalties then it would screw everything else up.

Same thing was happening to me in my Blue Jackets season. It took Rick Nash 10 games before he scored his first goal, despite leading the team in shots by a wide margin.

I wonder if it's that you tend to try to harder with guys who are "supposed" to score, maybe take more low percentage shots that you would take with other players.

Anyways, now after 25 games he leads my team with 12 goals.

It's been a while since I've enjoyed a game as much as NHL2K5. I already finished a full 82-game season with the Maple Leafs before starting another season with the Blue Jackets.

Hmm ... that's weird. I have Nedved and Ryan Smyth as my top two scorers, with Mike York not far behind. Eric Brewer is my top-scoring defenseman. A lot like reality.

Take care,

ESPN has a decent game this year for sure and i've seen some pretty good stats, especially compared to hockey games of the past. Penalties are a bit of an issue (amount called vs comp) but you have to set some a bit higher to compensate ( which i have) so the comp gets called more, which also means you have to lay off right thumbstick more too. On all-star the comp gets more of a break penalty-wise. A separate slider for human/comp penalties would of been kick-@ss.

I've never been a big soccer fan but WE:8 has my interest piqued with all your remarks. I've liked the game but Fifa has always turned me off because it never seemed like a real game ( scores too high...havent played this years). WE8 is getting some big praise so im going to check it out and prolly ask u guys a million questions.
