They really thought the 'Diamond Cam' was sooooo cool that they had to have this!?!?!?!?
Someone should be fired! Are the network execs that out of touch with what people really care about?

Actually while it wasn't a particularly high ratio, I definitely saw some useful Diamond Cam shots. Of course, they were only useful for studying hitters (hands, extension for low balls, etc.), they were horrible as far as gameplay. Additionally, I can't see any similar usefulness for the football cam. But perhaps it will provide a few cool shots, which is I guess all they would want.

So these cameras are supposed to have us stop and marvel, "Wow, what big calves that offensive tackle has!"
This is technology only for technology's sake -- I need to be shown how this helps provide the viewer with a better broadcast. I'm very skeptical.
Take care,
PK

Good grief, you would think somehow the existence of this camera somehow insults you guys or kicks you in the crotch. It's not a big deal. It's an attempt to try something new.
If you guys were in charge, we would never have instant replay or the 'reverse angle,' forget about the sky-cam or the coll vapor-trail stuff ESPN does.

It's a sh*t gimmick. Just like the Diamond Cam was. It provides no use what-so-ever. And the quality is awful! I don't mind if they place some different cameras around for some possible interesting angles, BUT, the point I am making is that they make these 'Cams' out to be revolutionary and advertise the hell out of them. I mean, come on, a CNN story for the new Endzone Cam, and all the freakin' references to the Diamond Cam during the playoffs and WS!!!???!!!Zeppo wrote:Good grief, you would think somehow the existence of this camera somehow insults you guys or kicks you in the crotch. If they are going to pimp these 'cams' that much they should at least be decent quality and provide an interesting addition to the broadcast.

Well, I am sorry you are so insulted by people using new technolgies to try new things.
I actually enjoy the mini-cams Fox uses for baseball games, especially the one near the plate. I think it gives an outstanding view of the batter's mechanics and hand/wrist work, and the contact of ball to bat at an angle you can't see from outside the foul lines.
Also, everything I read about these cams for the SB had Fox guys saying things like 'we're just trying out something new' and 'if we get a couple shots, great, if not, no big deal.' So if you got caught up in some hype about this camera revolutionizing sports coverage, blame the CNNs and yourself, not Fox or the technicians who want to try new things.
Most of our generation are not aware how much of a controversial thing instant replay was when it was first tried. Execs were afraid it would confuse the audience, and provide nothing of value to the boradcast. Now here we are 40 years later and it is used to officiate the games! And when 'reverse angle' was first tried on MNF, there was almost a rebellion by the ABC execs, who were again afraid it would turn people off and confuse them. I guess if you were in the test groups, they would have been right.

Duh!Zeppo wrote:Spooky, the word is 'Pylon.' It's the little orange thing on the corner of the end zone

I know what it is, just don't know how to spell it. Spellcheck could not figure out either (I swear I tried 'pylon' too) so I put it in quotes and figured you guys would get it.

I actually liked that Diamond Cam. Did it revolutionize the broadcast? No, but it was pretty cool. Did the pylon cam revolutionize the broadcast? No, but it was interesting. When used between action cameras like that break up the monotony of a typical broadcast. Used in excess and it becomes an annoyance. I think Fox handled it well for the World Series and the Super Bowl. I didn't like how they showed some playes from behind the qb last night though. That needs to go during live action.

I'm the complete opposite of you Scoop. I found the that pylon and ground cams added absolutely nothing to the broadcast. I don't not need the monotony of the broadcast broken up by a shot of the centers crotch during the extra point.
I love the camera on a wire that they've been using more lately. I like seeing an actual NFL play from the pointof view I'm used to only seeing in Madden or 2K5. I wish they'd do that more from the defensive perspective.
The ground cam during the WS was more interesting than the NFL one, but only slightly. If I want to see the mechanics of a batter, I'd love to see a side shot, above shot, or pitchers view.

Agree with you Matt. I love the 'video game' perspective of that wire cam in the NFL! I would LOVE to see more elavated behind the catcher cams in the MLB broadcasts as I love to see the field and the runners react to hits.matthewk wrote:I'm the complete opposite of you Scoop. My main beef with the crappy small cams is the quality. As Skidmark said "The great part about the diamond cam was how it was focused on the dirt right in front of it, and the rest of the picture was an out of focus haze. " That to me is totally unnacceptable in an age of HD broadcasts. The things look worse than my camera phone and if they actaully do add an interesting angle and perspective, no one can see it anyway.

Madden 2006 Features:
The Pylon Cam - See the game from the perspective of the end zone pylon! (Warning, may create framerate issues on the Xbox).
The Ground Cam - See above.
Create a Section - Create your own section of fans in the stands. Make your own dog pound, imitate the Raider fans, do wild and crazy things with the fans that will then display during your game (not available for online games).
The Wide Receivers Eye - Catch a pass from the perspective of the receiver. The ball will flash blue for bullet passes, green for smooth and tight spirals, and orange for wounded ducks. Watch the ball into your hands or try to run before you make the catch! But be careful, if you don't recognize the medicine ball, you may find yourself in the locker room getting an Xray.
