Hey guys,

Just got my beta kit yesterday. Setup was a snap and I was up and running in less than 10 minutes. Had a blast getting totally thrashed in ReVolt. Those little RC cars take some practice to get a handle on. The voice chat really adds to the experience.

After the wife went to bed I played a game of NFL Fever against a college student in Texas. Lost 24-27 with my Bucs against his Dolphins. Since I really suck a football games I considered this to be really good. He had a group of friends stop by in the middle of the game and I could hear them commenting on how they couldn´t believe he was playing lag free against a guy in Alabama.

Anyway, if any of you guys on Live want a nice boost to your NFL Fever stats just look for me online. But when we get a decent racing game you better watch out.

MixDJ1 - My beta pack is on the UPS truck as we speak, and so I should be up and running sometime tonight or tomorrow (I´m a husband and dad, so I might not get online as quick as possible).

OK, I NEED your help. How do I hook this thing up? Will I need to get a router (money is real tight right now), or can I just get a long ethernet cable and switch back and forth between my xbox and pc? Any help with connection from anyone would really be appreciated. Thanks!

I connected with a router as that is the easiest option. You can pick up a decent broadband router for under $50 at BestBuy or CompUSA. You should be able to swap cables between the PC and Xbox as well. If your ISP tracks the MAC address of your PC´s network adapter then you will have to have the Xbox spoof it. There is an option in the setup where you can key in a MAC address. At first I would just plug the cable in and give it a shot. If it doesn´t work then you´ll need to manually key in the MAC address or put in a router. If you need more specific instructions let me know.

MixDJ1 - Thanks for the info, and I may be asking for some help in the next few days. One question, if I get a long cable, what specifically should I be asking for? I know it´s an ethernet cable, but does it have a model number? I have MSN as my ISP through DSL. Will I need to shut my modem off when switching the cable? Sorry for the questions...I am a real novice and want to get online ASAP.

BTW, what is your gamer tag? I would love to look you up and play some games. Thanks again.

Great White,

Just ask for a CAT5 patch cable. It should be no more than $15-20 for a longer cable and if you have a wholesaler in the area you can probably pick one up for around $5.

I did cycle the power on my modem but I don´t know that it was actually necessary. I´m using cable modem. DSL can be a little trickier. Some DSL service requires you to log on with a username and password. If you get started and get stuck I´ll be happy to help if I can.

My gamertag is MixDJ1. Definitely look me up when you get connected.

MixDJ1 - Does it matter if the CAT5 patch cable is straight or crossover? I probably have the wording all wrong, but think there are different CAT5 patch cables out there. Here are a few links, please let me know what you think:

If you´re going to a hub/router/modem you want a straight through patch cable. Crossover cables allow you to go from PC to PC or in this case PC to Xbox. The only reason you would do that is if you were going to put two NICs in your PC and set up internet sharing and use your PC as a router. If you go that route you´ll need your PC on whenever you want to use Xbox Live. But I guess I´m going too far with this. In short: get a straight through patch cable.

MixDJ1 - Thanks again. The wife called and the beta kit has arrived!! Looks like I will be going shopping tonight for that cable and possibly a router. I will look you up in the next day or two. I assume there is a buddy or friends list.(?).

MixDJ1 - I got it to work. I played a guy in NFL2K3 and lost 16-14. He played a fair game, and I had a lot of fun. There was no lag. The only problem I had when I first hooked up my direct connection (can´t afford a router at the moment), was that I had to turn my modem off. After giving it a minute or two, I was up and running. There weren´t many players online which really surprised me.

Great to hear! I´m glad things went smoothly for you. If you want to play some NFL Fever today let me know. I don´t have NFL2K3 so I can only do Fever for now. You can add me to your friends list manually. What is your gamertag? Well, I need some sleep. I should be online somtime after 9:00am to 10:00am.

MixDJ1 - I added you to my "friends" list, don´t know if you got the invite. So far I am loving NFL2K3 online. Unfortunately I am having a hard time finding a lot of people to play. My record is 2-2, and the guys I´ve played have kept it "real." I´m still having a hard time defending the run against Bettis. Otherwise I might be 4-0. I lost to the same guy twice!

I have had no lag. It is as if the other player was right next to me. I just hope they can add some more content, like possible leagues and such. Anyway, I can´t wait for NBA2K3 and NHL2K3 to name a couple.

GreatWhite,

I got the invite and accepted. Unfortunately I don´t have NFL2K3. I´m more of a racer than a football player. I have played a couple games of Fever and they were totally lag free. Most of my time has been spent in ReVolt. I´m amazed a how addicting a simple little RC racing game can get. Actually it´s probably just the meeting new people and all the converstation that makes it so addicting. Out of the two to three dozen people I´ve raced with there have only been 1 or 2 people I´d avoid in the future. In fact I have three pages of people in my friends list already.

Anyway, I´ll keep looking for you online. Maybe I´ll rent 2k3 this week and try to meet up with you. In the meantime have fun on Live.

MixDJ1 - Until you rent NFL2K3, I´d be open to a little NFL Fever. So I will look for you online.
