What text based baseball game?

Post by ILikePie »

Like many here, every year I highly anticipate the yearly batch of baseball games. I am hearing good things from the likes of EA (booooooo), ESPN, and 989.

In the meantime, I am wanting to tryout a text based game just to see if they pull me in.

I know OOTP seems to be the top dog, but I hear good things about Diamond Mind too.

For all the texters out there, what are the big differences?

If this is my first rodeo, so to speak, which do you think I should try?

Depends what you are looking for.

OOTP and Baseball Mogul are management games loosely based on the game of baseball. If you are more into making trades, setting ticket prices, etc. than statistical accuracy then this is probably what you want. I am personally not a fan of either of these games.

DMB and Strat-O-Matic have very little fantasy management type features but are excellent baseball simulation games. They excel at replays with either stock teams or re-drafted teams. They are also good for playing tournaments with great teams of the past. Both are fairly expensive though. But they are worth it.

Action PC is a new kid on the block. It has some potental but is still a bit rough. It is a cheap alternative to the two I mentioned above.

If you are looking for good old fashioned season replays, strat and DMB are a step ahead of ActionPC. I am a beta tester for all of the AcionPC (DKSports) games, and I think baseball is the weakest of all DK's games. Of the two I prefer Strat over DMB. When I play DMB I feel like I am playing baseball in an excel spreadsheet. Strat does so many things right. APBA Baseball is supposed to be excellent also, but I have never played it.

For Baseball management sims you can't go wrong with OOTP. Wonderful game that I can't give enough praise too.

BK,

I used to love Action PC Football, but I haven't played it in about 4 years. Are there any new features? Is there a franchise mode now?

Lots of new features, QB spy, new interface, etc, etc, not to mention a lot of tweaks to the game engine itself as far as how it figures out results. I believe franchise mode was taken out (it was installed briefly but was ultra limited).

Check out PureSim

I'd also recommend that you check out PureSim Baseball.

www.puresim.com

Great text base baseball game with a fantastic UI, fun gameplay, a great user community and solid support from the developer.

I own both OOTP and DMB, but PureSim is more fun and immersive in my opinion.

i gave action pc football a whirl a couple of months ago and i like it very much. I want to get into it more and will likely do so soon. A DSP league would be great with that title.

The new baseball game was just released at the low price of $20 bucks...not sure how long that lasts however.

BK- neat to see that a DSPer is a beta tester. I like how the football has both nfl and college options.

I am a Charter member of an online draft league for Action PC.. We may have some openings soon if you are interested.

Dave Koch (maker of APC) is a great guy, and very responsive to his customers.

For career play, I agree with most that ootp6 is such a great game. I'm still playing the heck out of it.. almost every night. It was really easy to take a team like the Expos to the World Series in earlier versions, but playing with the Brewers has been quite a challenge.

Probably tied for game of the year, imo.

I started playing Strat-O-Matic with just cards and dice back when I was 14. I really love it, and recommend it big time.

For those who have played both Diamond Mind and Strat, which would you give the edge to, and why?

Strat. I like the features and the interface of strat much more. The web builder and the report generator are great. DMB is a great game, but some times it feels sterile, while strat just has a baseball feel to it. I also think strat does a better job in rating the fielders.

DMB is finally releasing a new version this spring, Version 9 I believe, so we'll see. I like DMB, but Strat is my favorite. And Baseball is by far Strat's best computer product.

Depends on what you're looking for, as someone mentioned above.

For careers, I think OOTP is definitely the leader. I've bought it for the last 3 years. I've played some Puresim along the way and although it's promising, it's not up to the level of OOTP. Baseball Mogul is way behind.

For replays, you're definitely looking for Stratomatic or Diamond Mind. I haven't played enough of them to offer an opinion.
