GT4 is not only 480p but also supports 1080i. It has been confirmed and pictures of it in the menu have been shown for the non-belivers that the PS2 could not do more then 480p. The 1080i is in game and not just limited to the picture mode. Confirmed by numerous sources in Japan who have purchased the game.
The environments in this game look good other than the 2D cutout fans in the desert truck scene. But I think the lines of the cars in Forza look more clean and realistic. The shot of that black GTO posted in here a week or so ago looks better than any of the cars in these screens.
But the ultimate scale-tipper will be in the driving and racing models, as always ...
Take care,
PK

My first post - although I've been lurking for so long, I feel I already know most of you personnally. Anyway, this may be a dumb question, but I'm assuming that to take advantage of the 480p/1080i, those of us with one of the original PS2's would have to replace it with one of the newer models that has progressive scan output. If that's the case, I would stick with my X-box and Forza (even though it's been delayed until April).

Welcome,
The original PS2's are capable of outputing gameplay screens in progressive scan mode. It's progressive scan DVD movie playback that the older units are incapable of (unless you buy the Sony DVD remote which has an updated DVD player driver).

And not to mention that Forza's AI is rumored to be it's strong point. I'm looking forward to this title.
The Anti-Aliasing has definitely been cleaned up. Looks good.
Yep just like a computer the higher the resolution the lower the jaggies as you have more pixels on the screen for better AA. What confuses me if they can get it to run at a decent FPS is why did it take so long for a game to utilize this?
i find it incredibly hard to believe this game can run in 1080i. Aren't racers fairly graphic intensive. Why do all other games on the Ps2 run in only 480i w/ a few sprinkles of 480p.

GT3 was jaggy as hell on my big screen.
Well it helps that they work hand in hand with Sony to get as much out of the PS2. I was shocked when I saw that a game was going to be in 1080i for the PS2 but it has been confirmed and according to those who have it say it runs fairly smooth.

I have to agree, Polyphony Digital has always seemed to push the Playstation (1 & 2) further than other developers because of their expertise with the system and close relationship with Sony. Sony knows that GT is a system seller and seems to give them as many resources possible. Wasn't Polyphony Digital the first company to start using the PS Analyzer to measure how much CPU power of the PS2 a game was utilizing?
The new OPM has an article about GT4 where the producer stated that his team of programmers figured out a better way to process graphics for the PS2 during the devlopment of GT4. This may be why they were able to add 1080i support to the game, although I'd rather have 720p.
It looks cleaner but it's not as dramatic as the difference between 480p and 720p material that you see on ESPN HD for instance.
I really doubt they are processing the full 1920x1080 pixels or even half that in interlaced mode. Probably safe thing to do since few displays are capable of displaying that many pixels.
Interesting speculation is that PD may have spent like $80 million to develop this title. Guess they can justify that kind of budget because they know they will sell a lot of units, maybe even help sell consoles as GT3 did.
