Anyone have the new PS2 Slim?

Post by Jackdog »

If so,school me up on it. My PS2 is dying and I want one of these badboys,if I can find one.

Does it overheat? Is it quieter than the original?

Thanks.

Just go to Best Buy or Target...they've got a grip of them (at least the ones by my house do).

My buddy has one and he loves it. It's quieter than the original and a hellova lot smaller. You really can't go wrong. I'll get one after the holidays, just in time for some MLB '06...I know you'll be with me.

I think the only knock on it is the Multitap doesn't work as it won't physically fit. Of course, I think only 3 games support the Multitap, so not much of a loss there.

I got one a month or so ago, when EB was doing the trade in your old PS2 and 5 games and get $150 credit. I just did that and got one.

It is much quieter, but the bottom does get really hot. I was playing GTA for a few hours once and it was sitting on my rug, when I picked up the PS@ the rug was very hot.

The DVD is really nice, I think it is progressive scan.

The hard drive doesn't work either, if you're into FFXI.

Thanks bro. I am so ready for MLB 06! MLB has me by the balls. Even with all it's little faults I just can't get enough of it.

I've been travelling back and forth to State College quite a bit lately so I picked one up just to have for when I'm hanging out nights in the hotel room. I love it.

They're making a compatible multi-tap for it and a USB HD (if they haven't already).

Thing definitely kicks IMO.

I also took advantage of EB's trade-in deal a couple of months ago and love my new slim PS2.

Picked one up in Japan the last time I was there and sold my older Japanese PS2 on ebay. I certainly like the size. It is quieter and seems to load faster. Looking to replace the US one with the slim design as well to save space. It's amazing just how much smaller it is.

I traded in my old one the day it came out and I really recommend it. It is more quite, it will generate heat but not as bad b/c the power supply is external(like the Gamecube), and it is very light. It uses a flip top lid to load the disc and not a tray. Only con is it does not use the current multitap and you cannot use the HDD.

Well that was a bust! I got to Best Buy and they wanted to give me a raincheck. No PS2's at all. Same with Target. Seems Sony didn't make or ship enough to cover the X-mas rush. What a major F*ck-up.

MLB 2006 is the ONLY reason I even still have my PS2. Hopfully it won't die between now and February.

I would. You can at least get used to the way it plays. I think it's a great game of baseball. You can trade it in on 06 when it pops.

I just read on Gamespot that Sony is air freighting these from China to the US. They stopped making the old models to get rid of inventory but they didn't ramp up the new model fast enough to prevent these shortages.

What is dumb is that air freight costs will eliminate any margins on a $150 product.

But I don't understand the sensation about this. Demand seems to be greater than expected because people who already have consoles are getting it or trading in the older models. They expected it would draw in new gamers but a lot of the demand is from existing gamers.

Is the old PS2 so big that people have to a few cubic inches of space? The quieter fan sounds like a nice thing but the thing isn't going to play the games better is it?

To be honest, I wanted one just because it looked so cool. It's also nice to have a spare PS2 around in case my older one dies on me. I'm sure my wife will love having a spare PS2 in the bedroom too  .

I think that frankly a lot of PS2's are crapping out now.... the launch models have been on shelves a *long* time now. I was going to ask Jackdog exactly meant by his "PS2 was dying" because Sony has usually been pretty good about fixing PS2's, depending on the defect. Perhaps they will be less friendly now that a newer model exists?
Also, never discount the "newness" of a gadget causing a frenzy....

I guess I've been lucky then. Mine is not showing any signs of dying so I wouldn't trade in just because the new one looks so "cool."

The slim design is nice but it's not a portable device so slimness doesn't seem like a big deal for something you have to keep plugged into the wall.

I'd rather spend the money on games or PSP or something I didn't have already.

I would cry like a baby if my PS2 crapped out... almost as much as I would cry if my Dreamcast died. Of course, since the Dreamcast is as dead as the dodo, I can afford to have four brand new Dreamcasts still-in-box held in reserve (this insures that I will be able to play Chu Chu Rocket and Samba de Amigo untill I die). I only have one PS2.... if it kicks off, I have to buy a new one. So far so good, though.

I'm surprised nobody has done a DC emu yet, although I guess it had a proprietary disc format (but I'm sure DC game images are somewhere on the Net).

But I have zero interest in playing games from obsoleted systems anyways. I tried emus for the Genesis and I can't believe I ever tolerated those kinds of graphics.
