OT: New Collective Soul CD

Post by JackB1 »

one of my favorite bands has returned from the dead! They have a new CD called "Youth" coming out this Tues and it's great! I already downloaded in it mp3 format and it's typical Collective Soul songwriting. Don't know if anyone cares about them anymore, but I sure am happy about this.

A buddy of mine just gave me a copy of a good mix CD he made and it had one of their new tracks on it (I forget the title). Sounded like vintage Collective Soul, though and that made me very happy.

I saw CS live about seven years ago (give or take a year) as an opening act for Van Halen (when they were on their Balance tour) and they were a heck of a band to hear live.

I was wondering what happened to these guys...glad to hear they have a new CD coming out.

Anyone ever see that live DVD they have out? (Think it was called Music in High Places). I've heard very good things about it but can never find it in the stores. I'd be interested to hear whether its worth ordering from Amazon.

I'm not a big CS fan, as I think Ed Roland writes pretentious lyrics disguised as something intelligent and socially conscious, but the band did put on a kick-ass live show a couple of years when playing the Carb Day Concert at the Indianapolis 500.

Take care,
PK

LOL. PK, you just reminded me that I was at that Carb Day (unless they did more than one). It was... what? 2001? 2002? I work at a computer book publisher in the Indianapolis area (near i465 and Meridian) and our publisher at the time bought Carb Day tickets for a bunch of us. I'm not much of a racing fan, but decided to go. Catching a little bit CS's set was probably the highlight for me, unfortunately, but still a good time. ;)

I agree, I've never found them to be the deepest band. But for me they're like watching a popcorn movie. Just kick back and enjoy the show (or music in this case). Must be why they work so well live (IMO).

I have that DVD and it's great. lots of neat outdoors scenes while they do
"unlugged" versions of some of thier hits. Worth getting if you are a CS fan.

PK...good songwriting is good songwriting, and these guys got it. They never claimed to be a "deep" band anyway...not sure why you are holding that against them? If you think their lyrics are "pretentious", that's your take on them. I would like to email you one of the heavier singles on the new album to see what you think. Can I?

Jack:

I can download it. I always liked CS' music except for the sappy ballads like "World I Know," but Roland's lyrics, especially for the ballads, are overwrought.

The band did rock live on Carb Day, though, and I always respect a band that rips live.

Take care,
PK

Ah Collective Soul, heard the new single earlier today. They had one of the best performances I had heard at the time on Rockline a few years ago doing When The Water Falls acoustic. Was excellent. Been a fan ever since.

Actually, I'd love to get me hands on a copy of that as well.

Also, does anyone remember which EA NHL game their track "Heavy" was the theme song for (back when those games had an opening video montage worth watching)? Was bugging me all day yesterday (which is sad). I want to say it was NHL '98, but I'm not sure.

BitTorrent is good... but I prefer MusicThief2.0. Don't use version 1.0 as it still sent some money to the artists.

Good one... although, you need to make your jokes a little less complicated...

And to think I came about one brain synapse transfer for doing a Google search for MusicThief 2.0 ... Silly me! :)
