BTW Airdog...that Rafael Saadiq is pretty sweet. Got it loaded up on the iPod and it's pretty smooth. Check it out when you get a chance.

Thanks, and holy s*** did I ever fudge the bucket on spelling his name properly. That's what studying for three exams and writing two essays will do for you.

Well let me just say...

The new De La Soul album "The Grind Date" is my favorite album of the year. I've been listening to it for the last two days straight and it is just brilliant.

Just downloaded the Brian Wilson SMiLE album after reading about it here and unfortunately do not get it. I have Pet Sounds and love it and understand the hype for that album, but SMiLE seems to be a few steps backwards from that. I do see the big deal at all. The songwriting is not memorable at all. I mean, it's not horible and there are some things that I think are okay, I just don't totally 'get it' and think that if people think this is miles ahead of Pet Sounds, thenI must not understand PEt Sounds like I thought I did.

But while on the subject of good songwriters, anybody listen to Nick Drake? He has been in pretty heavy rotation on my iPod recently and I just think his style and songwriting were SO ahead of it's time. It's pretty melancholy, but it is just beautiful, emotional, extremely melodic music.

The Stills - "Logic Will Break Your Heart"
Elliot Smith - "From A Basement On the Hill"

"King's Crossing" on the Smith disc is probably my favourite song of the last little while - great stuff.

Airdog, thanks for bumping this thread. I was going to look for it tonight to pimp the Elliot Smith CD.

Fantastic music by a truly tortured soul. This CD goes thru so many emotions. I love it and will listen to his previous works. Too bad we won't have future works by him.

Also, the Green Day CD is fantastic. I liked Dookie in my post teen years but did not purchase any other Green Day until this one. This is one fantastic CD.

Am also listening to Muse and Death Cab for Cutie.

It's really good, but I think there will be scores of people, especially new or non-U2 fans, who will be disappointed because the rest of the record isn't like "Vertigo." "Vertigo" is the hardest-rocking song on the record and definitely "the single."

Take care,
PK

Yeah, the album is packed with quality songs. I really don't hear any filler material. The song closest to "Vertigo" is probably "All Because of You", which will probably be a single as well. I really like "Crumbs From Your Table", "Original of the Species", and "City of Blinding Lights." The only song I really don't care for is "Love and Peace or Else."

Agreed on all counts. I really like "Miracle Drug."

For some reason I was thinking "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" didn't come out until the 27th? Thanks for the heads-up Leebo33! For the first time since I can't remember when, this is one CD I'm going to have to buy the instant it hits the stores! I'm totally hooked by "Vertigo"... what kickin', powerful tune! The last time I was hooked by a U2 song on first listen was "Mysterious Ways". The only thing I don't like about Vertigo is the soupy "yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah" ending - it deserves a more distinctive coda than that, IMO.

I believe the official U.S. release date is November 23rd. I'm not sure if they will push it up or not now that it has been leaked. I will be picking up the Deluxe Limited Edition.

Definitely one of my most anticipated CD's in a while. I really liked the last U2 and am also hopelessly addicted to Vertigo. In fact, it is probably going to be my custom goal music in NHL 2K5. They played it before the Vikings-Giants game last week, it is one of the best stadium rock songs in a while as well.

Much better than whatever Trick Daddy's latest s*** they were playing...his newest song (rapping over Crazy Train) has to be one of the worst songs I've heard lately.

I've had a listen to the new CD as well. I've always been a huge U2 fan, and have over 60 CDs (officials and boots) and was desperately waiting for this release. I'm also picking up the Deluxe Limited Edition...these guys just absolutely rock. This has to be at least the 3rd best album they have, and may go on to be another true classic. Just an excellent bunch of music. Everyone do yourself a favor and pick this one up on the 23rd.

I liked Vertigo the first time I heard it, you know, when it was called "You Keep Me Hangin On" and it was sung by the Supremes. I can't listen to Vertigo and not hear the melody for that song.

Mad:

Yeah, I agree. It's only been a couple of listens, but I put "Atomic Bomb" in the same vein of quality as "All That You Can't Leave Behind."

So far, it's not "Achtung Baby," but I'll be surprised if U2 ever makes another album that good. I also think "War" was fantastic on so many levels, so I put that ahead of this record.

But hey, it's early days -- only a couple of listens. "Atomic Bomb" could rise or fall on my list.

Take care,
PK

Yeah, that song is simply brutal - especially since Trick Daddy has at least a bit of talent.

Just listened again in the car on my way to work. "Love and Peace", I think, is one of the best on the album. I love the sort of loungy, almost, gospel-like sound to it. And it's definitely a song that'll have people clapping along when (if) performed live. Actually my least favorite right now is "All Because of You". Not because it's not good, but because the rest are all so much better.

"Love and Peace" is growing on me. I really like the second half of the song a lot better than the beginning. It's all relative. I still like it a lot more than my other "least favorite" U2 tracks like "Peace on Earth", "Playboy Mansion", "Miami", "Elvis Presley and America."
