This is a letter to the editor from Sunday's Syracuse Post Standard:
I've been a Red Sox fan my whole life and as such, I've taken my share of ribbing from friends and co-workers.
From the Bucky Dent home run and Bill Buckner's gaffe at first base to Aaron Boone's walk-off home run, I've heard it all - at least I thought so until now!
I was driving my aunt to the Syracuse airport with my mother-in-law and three-year-old son. I was tired and grumpy from staying up late the previous two evenings watching the Red Sox slowly dig themselves a hole at Yankee Stadium. The conversation in the car was light, with some references to the game, which I avoided because I was tired of hearing about it.
Getting off Exit 36 on 90 East, I rolled down my window to pay my toll. I handed the ticket out the window and fumbled with the change long enough for the attended to quip to me, "Your toll is 1918."
I stopped for a second and looked at him, noticing that he was halfheartedly trying to conceal his evil smile. It was painfully obvious that he had noticed I was wearing my Red Sox hat and jacket.
I handed him the 70 cents and couldn't help but laugh at his remark. I have to give the guy credit for being so quick on his feet, even though it was at my expense.
Driving away, all I could think of to say was, "You just cursed the Yankees for that remark!" I laughed once again and thought to myself: ". . . and I hope I see it in my lifetime."
